Who: Martha Jones and Amy Pond When: Backdated: January 4, 2014 Where: Cafe What: Random Encounter of two TARDIS club members? Rating/Warning: Low/None Status: Complete
Amy was sitting in one of her favorite cafes with a cup of tea cupped between her two hands. It was keeping her warm, both inside and out. She was smiling into it, thinking about John and her life, and the adventures she’d gone on with The Doctor since he got his TARDIS. She had a really good life. Though, she was starting to think it was time to get some more work. Maybe she’d have to send Lo a text message.
She pulled out her phone to send off the text, and was surprised by the sound of someone’s voice calling her name.
Martha was enjoying a nice day off. They had been so few and far between for so long that now she almost didn't know what to do with herself. Of course she was on call just in case any emergencies arose, but she was confident that the new doctors would be able to take care of it. Speaking of doctors, Martha still couldn't quite believe the adventure her and her friends had gone on for New Years Eve. New Year's Eve in New York in 1920. Could there be a better way to spend the night? After she'd spoken to The Doctor and Mickey and Jack and Ianto about it, Martha had realized they were missing someone and made sure to let Amy know of the plans, because while Amy might have known a different regeneration of The Doctor, she was still Team TARDIS.
And speak of the devil, Martha was just about to leave the coffee shop she'd stopped in to when she spotted the redhead, "Amy, hi." She said as she approached her.
Oh, yes, New Year’s Eve! It was a blast. Amy had dragged along her boyfriend, and shown him just a taste of what travels with the Doctor meant to her in her dreams. He wasn’t her Doctor, but he was still The Doctor, and that was close enough.
Amy broke into a smile when she saw Martha. The two weren’t really close, but they were friendly, for sure. Team TARDIS and all that. “Martha!” She said. “Fancy meeting you here! Funny, I haven’t seen you since nineteen twenty.” A grin. “What are you up to? Come sit.”
“Nineteen twenty-one.” Martha corrected, smirking as she took a seat at the table Amy was sitting at. They might have arrived in 1920, but left in 1921, “Not too much. I’ve finally got a regular schedule again, so I’m just doing whatever. I’ll be meeting up with Mickey later on, but for now just running some errands.” She liked that she would be able to spend more time with Mickey now and wouldn’t have to worry about getting called in during a date or when they were just hanging out. “What’re you up to?”
Amy actually laughed. “That’s right! Good ole Twenty-one.” She beamed, nodding. “That’s good! A regular schedule is good. I haven’t had one of those in ages.” She lifted her tea to take a sip, enjoying the warmth for a moment, and listening to Martha talk. “I was just taking a personal… day? Hour? Minute?” She grinned a toothy grin. “It’s good for the complexion, you know.”
Martha laughed as well, “I haven’t had a regular schedule in months. We, along with one of the other hospitals, have been short staffed, so some doctors have been doing double duty and I was picking up the slack. We’ve finally got two new doctors so regular schedules are back on. It’s nice, cause it means I get to spend more time with Mickey.” She took a sip of her drink, “What’s your schedule like? I mean, do you always have shoots or do you have time in between?”
“I have a lot of time between, actually,” Amy said, feeling a little sheepish. It sounded like Martha worked a whole lot longer hours and probably quite a bit harder than she did. But Amy loved her job, and she wouldn’t trade it for the world. “I’ve been taking some time off… there was this Photographer who caused me some problems last year, so… I’m getting back into it.”
Martha’s brow rose slightly at that, “What kind of problems?” They hadn’t really spoken for awhile, aside from New Year’s Eve, so Martha was unaware of the stalker problem that Amy had had or still had.
“Well, a photographer on a set where I was working made some inappropriate comments, and handled my body in a way that…” Basically, she’d been pinched or slapped on the backside. It made her feel dirty. “Anyway, I told Lo, my agent, and he got the guy fired. That’s when the scary emails started, and the phone calls… and we got a restraining order, then he broke it, and I think he might still be in jail? I don’t know.” It was stressful, and made Amy’s body shiver just thinking about it.
“That’s horrible.” Martha said, frowning, “I hope he’s still in jail. You don’t deserve to have to deal with that stuff.” She’d heard of similar things happening with patients who became infatuated with their doctors before and Martha was glad that nothing like that had ever happened to her. However, she was disgusted that it had happened to Amy who was such a nice person and didn’t deserve that.
“Thanks. I think he is. You should have seen Lo. My agent? I don’t think I’d ever seen him so furious. I hope I never to again, to be honest.” Amy said, then lifted her tea to sip from it again. She almost felt a little shaky just talking about it again.
“I don’t understand some people. I’m glad you got it all taken care of though,” Martha decided that it was probably better to change the subject, “So what did you think of New Year’s Eve?” She still couldn’t quite believe that they had kicked off the new year in a completely different year. “I still can’t believe I actually got to travel in the TARDIS like in the dreams.” She was going to have to convince the Doctor to take her somewhere else soon.
“I had a blast!” Amy said, grinning. It might be a different story after the dream about her last time in New York, but… this time was wonderful. Having John there made everything great, too. It was such a good thing that her Dream life got on so well with her Waking life. “John and I found this Irish pub, it was amazing. They really know how to throw a good party. And the fact that prohibition was just around the corner seemed to make everyone want to party even harder.”
“I honestly couldn’t have thought of a better way to ring in the new year. The Doctor picked the perfect time and place,” Martha was glad that her friends had all had a good time, even if they hadn’t all been together, “I think that definitely made a difference.”
“I do, too. I really hope that we’ll get to go out more. I mean, he’s not really my Doctor, but he’s still The Doctor, isn’t he?” Amy said, smiling warmly. “And I love him just as much.”
“Is it weird? Having him around, but not at the same time?” Martha knew how strange it had been for that time when she’d known The Doctor, but he still hadn’t dreamt about her and in Amy’s case he never would. Speaking of Amy’s Doctor, “I saw someone else on Valarnet talking about you and The Doctor. Is he from your dreams too?” Obviously he was, if he knew Amy and The Doctor, but she didn’t want to seem too nosey.
“...no, not really. My life is so different here. It’s like my Doctor doesn’t exist yet. Maybe he’ll come back for me when he does, but… I’m really happy the way things are going in this world. The Waking world.” Amy tried to explain. “I’ll wait. I can wait for him.” She paused for a moment. “...You mean… Rory?”
Martha smiled, “I’m glad. That’s a real good way of looking at things.” She took a sip of her drink as she listened and nodded when Amy mentioned the man’s name, “Yeah, him. He’s close to you in the dreams, isn’t he?” It was obvious by the way Amy had paused before bringing him up.
“In the dreams we’re married. We were friends as kids.” Amy explained. “He travels with the Doctor and me sometimes. I only wonder how much he knows, how much he’s dreamed. I’m sure we’ll talk about it all soon enough.” She said, giving a gentle shrug of her pale shoulders.
“How do you feel about him here?” Martha was curious. Her and Mickey still hadn’t met in the dreams yet, but she knew from Jack that they ended up together in the end, so she had been wondering if it was because of the dreams that they had wound up together in real life, “Do you think what happens in the dreams is supposed to happen in real life? According to Jack, Mickey and I end up together and we got together before we even knew that.”
“Oh, I dunno,” Amy said, giving her shoulders a little shrug. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. More friends? More for Team TARDIS?” She said. Honestly, she’d been trying her best not to think about it. “I don’t think things that happen in the dreams are destined to come true in this world. I mean, there are a lot of people here who aren’t with who they’re with in the dreams.”
Martha nodded, she could understand that and also why Amy would think that considering she had a boyfriend already. She probably didn’t want to think of the trouble it would cause if suddenly she did fall for this dream boyfriend. Martha was glad that in her case, she and Mickey had wound up together in both worlds, but not everyone would feel the same way, which was understandable, “Are you going to meet him in real life?”
“I imagine we’ll meet eventually.” Amy said, giving a gentle shrug. She was slightly nervous about it, but trying not to be. “He’s a member of Team TARDIS, after all. We have to stick together.”
“A member of team TARDIS who you’re apparently engaged to in his dreams.” Martha had read his post about the stag night and then Venice, so it wasn’t as if it was a big secret or anything, “Have you told John about him?” She couldn’t help but wonder what it would have been like, had her or Mickey been dating someone else when they’d met. Would they have felt the same connection or would it have been different?
“Married to. ...and have a child with.” Amy confessed. “John and I haven’t talked much about him, actually.” She paused. “Maybe I should tell him before all of this comes out. I don’t want him to worry.” It wasn’t like she was going to leave John for someone she didn’t know. Every time she woke up from the Dreams she knew what was real and what wasn’t. Her feelings for John were real. Her feelings for Rory ended when the Dreams did.
"I can see how that could get complicated," Martha never really had trouble distinguishing real life from the dreams, but then again the dreams were so fantastical and she'd met Mickey before her dream engagement to someone else, but she knew, thanks to Jack, that her and Mickey wound up together anyway, so it was a little easier that way, "I'm surprised he hadn't seen Rory's posts and asked about it already."
“He’s not on Valarnet as much as I’ve been lately. And I’m not on that much, either.” Amy said, giving a gentle shrug of her shoulders. “I’ll talk to him about it. I was hoping to have something more concrete to tell him. Maybe after I go meet Rory. I’m sure I’m going to. Then I can tell John everything.”
Martha nodded, “Makes sense. I hope meeting him helps you figure things out.” She took a sip of her drink, “I’m sure John will understand when you tell him. I mean, if you don’t wind up feeling anything for Rory when you meet him.” Martha only wanted her friends to be happy and while her and Amy weren’t as close as she was with some of her other friends, the last thing she’d want was for Amy to be upset as a result of her current relationship and dream relationship mingling.
“I hope so, too. And I think it will.” Amy said, nodding once. “I don’t… I mean, I don’t think I’m going to feel anything for him. Though, it’s not every day that I get to meet my Dream Husband.” She said, then paused for a moment thinking about it. She didn’t like that she was going to have to tell John everything, though he’d been with her enough times when she’d woken up from her dreams confused and shaking, he probably knew quite a bit.
