Jane hurried along the pavement to the coffee shop Gwen had suggested they meet at. She futilely tried to push her hair behind her ears as the cold wind whipped it around her head. She was late, had gotten swept up in her data and lost track of the time. It was only her kitten coming and patting at the pen she was twiddling in her fingers that she realised what the time was and started racing manically around the house to head out.
She pushed through the coffee shop door and spotted her by the wall and made her way over. “I’m so sorry! I got carried away analysing some new data and didn’t realise the time,” she apologised, running her hand through her hair to try and tame it somewhat. “I’m sorry,” she winced in apology as she sat down opposite her.
Gwen was already in a booth near the front door, her jacket, scarf and gloves off and a half-finished cup of tea sitting in front of her on the table. She’d taken the time to get some work done--things that she needed to finish before she started working for Jarvis full time. It wasn’t a problem for her to have the extra couple of minutes work. She looked up as Jane sat down across from her, grinning softly, and shook her head. “Hey, no problem. Really. I got some things done so I can go see Michael tonight. Really, this saved me some time.”
“Oo, Michael? Spill the beans,” Jane grinned, slipping off her scarf and settling into the booth opposite her friend.
Gwen laughed. She went a little pink and shook her head. “We’re together. Now. Officially.” Finally. --It went unsaid, though it was lingering there. Gwen and Michael had been nearly inseparable since October, had already kissed once or twice, and took nearly two whole months to become officially boyfriend and girlfriend. “On New Year’s Eve he asked me.”
“Seriously? You’re off the market? Such a shame,” Jane pouted, teasing her, before grinning. “So you’re all official and stuff? When do we get to meet him?”
Gwen laughed and nodded. “Off the market. That’s me.” She grinned softly, then leaned back in her chair. “Whenever you want. I’m sure he’d love to meet my friends. He hasn’t met many--though he and John get along really well.”
“Great! Drag him by the bakery for an interroga...I mean meeting with everyone,” Jane winked at her. “Who’s John?” Jane asked.
Gwen laughed. “I will. John? John’s my roommate-and-best-friend.” Turns out Gwen had a few of those. Best Friends, not roommates. But all of her closest friends (besides Jane) were men. Roger, John and now Chuck… and possibly Jarvis. In the future, anyway. Since she was starting to work for him, that was a possible direction their relationship would go. “He’s…” Gwen leaned in a little to whisper conspiratorially. “...have you ever heard of a TARDIS?”
Jane arched her eyebrow curiously. “No, but I get the feeling I want to,” she grinned, sitting forward in her seat.
“It travels through space and time.” Gwen said. She was being completely serious, completely secretive. She leaned in a little more. “I went to three parties on New Year’s Eve.”
"What? How?" Jane asked eagerly, leaning closer. "Are you pulling my leg?"
“No no! Not at all! It came from the Dreams. My roommate, John, is what you call a ‘Time Lord’... he travels through space and time in his time machine. It’s called the TARDIS. ‘Time And Relative Dimensions In Space’ I think is what it stands for.” Gwen explained. She was still leaning in. “I did. I went to the 1920’s, I went to the Stark Party, and I went to a party at Michael’s place. All in one night.”
"You're kidding me! That's amazing! The power requirements for it must be huge even if it is physically possible," Jane wondered aloud. She was the type of person who was skeptical until she saw it happening in front of her face, but she'd always been that way.
“Honestly, I have no idea how the TARDIS works,” Gwen said. That part wasn’t the important part to her, really. Of course, it should have been. She was a scientist, after all. But that wasn’t the sort of question that you asked The Doctor when you were flying with him through space and time. “We should ask him next time we hang out with him.”
“Can we?” Jane asked, almost on the edge of her seat with anticipation. “You know so many awesome people!” she smiled at her friend.
Gwen chuckled. “I have a lot of friends, sure. I love how many people I’ve been able to meet and befriend here in Orange County. I feel like I was a bit of a hermit after--” she stopped herself from saying after Peter and I broke up... “after undergrad.”
Jane eyed her suspiciously as Gwen stopped herself mid-sentence. “Ok, spill, what happened?” she asked. She wasn’t always as observant with her friends as she ought to be, mostly because she wasn’t used to having so many, but she had started trying to pay more attention to the finer aspects of the people closest to her.
Gwen gave a little sigh. “There was this guy that I was seeing in college. I mean, more than seeing. We were practically engaged. We were living together, it was great. Then I left. I went across county, from Stanford to MIT, to do my doctorate. Our relationship fell apart--long distance didn’t work. After we broke up, I was… a bit of a hermit.” She admitted. “The amazing Peter Parker. It took me years to get over him.”
"Sounds rough," Jane sympathised, reaching a hand across the table to place it on her arm. "Why didn't he follow you?" Jane asked. It made sense to her that if you loved someone that much you would go with them.
“He was doing his own work and his own studies in California.” Gwen explained. “I mean, I think we both knew the reality of it all.” She shook her head. “But now I have Michael. And I… I really see a future with him. I’m really happy with him.” She explained gently.
“Good, I’m glad, now I just have to vet him,” Jane said casually. “Has he been vetted by the others yet?” she asked, half-teasing half not.
“No, not really. He hasn’t met many of my friends. Just John.” Gwen said, softly. Maybe it was time for her to throw a big party to introduce him to the rest of her friends. Or maybe it was time for her to start introducing them one by one. She wasn’t sure. “I’m sure you’re going to approve, though. He’s wonderful.”
"Well that's a good start," Jane told her. "So what does he do?"
“He’s a musician,” Gwen said, then gave a sheepish chuckle. “I mean, he works at the coffee shop by day, and does gigs and things at night. He’s got an agent, and I think he’s making a deal with a recording studio?”
“A musician? Is he a guitarist? They’re always hot,” Jane winked at her friend. “Sounds like he’s going in the right direction then. Has he got any gigs coming up that the girls and I could come see?” she asked hopefully.
“Yeah.” Gwen said, and her voice had an edgy, breathy tone to it--like she was swooning just talking about him. “God, you should see him. He’s amazing. Adonis-like. I have no idea why a guy like him is interested in a nerd like me, but hey… I’m not complaining.” She broke into a grin.
“Oh, yeah. He performs at Baxter Bakery on Thursday nights. Just don’t embarrass me by saying anything weird to him.” She added, teasing.
Jane tried to look affronted by the idea. “As if I would do such I thing, when have I ever said something weird?” she asked.
Gwen simply gave her a look.
“What?” Jane laughed. “I can’t help it if I talk science sometimes,” she shrugged innocently. “It’s in my blood.”
Gwen broke into a grin. “All right, science I can handle. Just don’t go giving him any of my secrets, all right?” She said, then glanced at her watch. “I have to get this paperwork back to the office. You want to meet up again soon? Maybe after you go see his show on Thursday?”
Jane mimed zipping her lips and throwing away the key. “My lips are sealed,” she smiled at Gwen. “Wait, you’re not coming with me to see his show?” Jane knew that if someone didn’t go with her and pester her, she was very unlikely to go. It was far too easy for Jane to put off going out in favour of working. She’d gone days without leaving the house before, Darcy had called her on it once and dragged her out of the house.
“I wasn’t planning on it. I mean, I suppose I can go. I just figured that you could check things out, meet Michael without my prying eyes and ears,” Gwen said, breaking into a grin. “And then report back to me later about how it all went.” She added.
“Oh, ok,” Jane replied. “I’ll see if I can get Darcy or Izzy to come with me, otherwise I might never get my nose out of my data,” she laughed. She knew Darcy would probably be up for it, she was always trying to get Jane out of the house.
Gwen beamed. “Good. I’d love to get him some more fans, anyway.” She said, giving her friend a wink. “Let me know how it all goes. I’m gonna head back to the office to drop these things off, then I’m headed to Michael’s place.” She said, collecting up her things and standing. “But text me as soon as you’ve gone to see him play.”
“I will, I may even text you during,” Jane laughed, standing along with her friend, hugging her as they said goodbye. A band, Darcy could only approve.
