Who: Romana and Severus
When: Early January
Where: OB’s office
What: Ultrasound
Rating/Warning: Low/Pregnancy Stuff
Status: Complete!
Today was the day that they went to the doctor and found out the sex of the baby. Romana was excited. She was one of those people that a surprise would have been nice, but it wasn’t completely necessary. It wasn’t like she was going to go out and buy a bunch of pink or blue things. That definitely wasn’t the kind of woman that she was. Gender neutral color scheme no matter what. It was still nice to know, and that way they could start choosing names.
The ride over to the doctors was fairly unremarkable. They’d even brought Daisy along so that she could finally see what was going on. As they parked and went inside to the waiting room, she took out a coloring book and handed it over to her daughter. Waiting sucked. “Let’s hope this doesn’t take all day.”
“As long as they’re running on time, I don’t see why it should.” Severus said. He set some crayons down on the coffee table where Daisy was happily turning pages in the book. Sitting inside the waiting room at the OB’s office was not his favorite thing in the world. He never knew where to look. He wasn’t supposed to look at the other people waiting, was he? He supposed that’s why so many waiting rooms had magazines and interesting artwork on the walls. Something to do with your eyes besides stare at others and wonder.
“It’ll be good to find out,” Severus said, hoping Romana was on the same train of thought. He reached for her hand and laced their fingers together while they waited. “So we’ll know if we need to start shopping for blue things.”
“When have you ever been to a doctor who is on time? You always sit in the waiting room for at least forty-five minutes,” she pointed out. She was planning on waiting that long this time too. Romana wasn’t very good at figuring out where to look in the waiting room too. That’s why she brought a book, in case her husband wasn’t very talkative. She sat down in one of the chairs and hoped she could lift herself out of it later.
She gave him a bit of a look and shook her head. “We’re not doing that to our kid. Our kid can have whatever gender they want, pink or blue or whatever. No judgments.”
“Well, of course,” Severus responded. “But when the baby is too young to make those kinds of decisions for him or herself? You know that all of our friends and family will want to buy him or her the appropriate color items.” That’s how Daisy wore so much pink in her first year of life.
“I know, it’s just sad when they have to represent a gender and be so.. binary about it. I think this whole Time Lord thing has given me new insights. Some of the Time Lords aren’t male or female or anything we’ve ever seen.” That’s because she was an alien. Or would have been. “I guess you’re right. We’ll figure it out.”
“Well, you know that the colors were actually the opposite until the nineteen forties.” Severus said, softly. He reached over for his pregnant wife’s hand. “But still. We can dress our baby in whatever colors you like, my love.” He said, then lifted her hand to press a kiss to her knuckles.
“I did know that. Mostly because I seem to know a lot of random knowledge about things of all sorts now. Things that just pop into my brain. Mostly about other planets and species of aliens. Though that never exactly comes in handy.” Le sigh. It was hard having two hearts. “I’d just as soon as go with black.” She waited for the look on his face and then smiled. “Are you ready for all of this? Not getting any sleep mostly.”
Of course. Time Lord. She would know about that, wouldn’t she? Severus held her hand close to his lips and nuzzled against her knuckles for a moment. “We’ve done it before. We’ll survive it again.” He said, then lowered her hand from his lips, the smirk on his face at the black comment still evident. “...and if I recall correctly, the merits far outweigh the flaws.”
It was hard not to be a complete know-it-all like she was in her dreams. The Doctor was too, but she sometimes was just far too straight and narrow for her own liking. “Mm yes we will.” She smiled and put a hand on her stomach. The baby was kicking. “That’s true, it does. Want to have a feel?”
“Always.” Severus said the word. He’d said it before, in his dreams. And it meant the world to him. He reached one hand over to gently run his warm hand over the swell in her belly, then gave a smile at the feel under his palm. He could feel the baby moving around in there. “I love him or her so much already,” he added, very softly.
The baby definitely knew that something was going on. Maybe it knew that it was at the doctors office. NO one liked the doctors office. She put her hand on top of his and settled back. “Me too. I’m really excited.” Daisy eventually came over and asked if she could feel, so Romana put their daughter’s hand on her stomach too. “See? That’s your baby brother or sister.”
“Do you have any ideas what we should name your baby brother or sister?” Severus asked the small, dark-haired girl.
“Dora.” Was Daisy’s reply. Then she went back to her coloring book.
Severus couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped him. “I should have known that’s what she’d say.”
Romana couldn’t help but laugh at Daisy’s response. “Yeah. I’m not surprised either. If it’s a little boy, I’m not sure we can get away with naming him Dora though.” It was a nice name. She liked it, though maybe if they were having a girl.
“Sadly I think all of the names I can think of from my dreams are pretty out there. Time Lords have odd ones. Did I ever tell you what my full name is in them?”
“No. No, I don’t think you ever did.” Severus said, thinking about it for a moment. He didn’t really like the name Dora. They’d have to come up with something else. “What is your name in the dreams?” He was fairly sure that he’d told her his name was the same in his own dreams.
“It’s Romanadvoratrelundar. All one word. Though apparently some of it means where I come from. Like Romana of the.. whatever.. Lundars. Or something like that.” Maybe she should pay better attention to things. “What about something simple like David. David and Daisy.” Romana and Severus both had weird names.
“Huh.” Severus said. He broke into a smirk. “David.” He repeated. “If it’s a boy, anyway. I like David.” He leaned back a bit on the waiting sofa. “David would be a fairly strange name if the baby in there’s a girl.”
A woman with a folder and a clipboard came out into the lobby and called for them. The family was led into one of the back rooms where Romana was told to lounge on the table and expose her tummy. Severus and Daisy followed behind. There was a huge television on the wall opposite, and as the nurse turned on the machine, it lit up, mirroring the ultrasound machine’s screen.
Severus and Daisy sat beside the hospital table bed thing and stared up at the screen, waiting while the nurse did the exam.
Romana laughed a little, “Yeah it would be. Let’s not pick a giant name with ten syllables, shall we? I like David for a boy.” Though maybe they should have some more options, depending on what the doctor said.
She got up and followed everyone into the exam room where she got up on the table with a bit of help. “It’s getting too hard to get up on this thing,” she teased. Not to mention she was just glad to be able to lie down for a moment. Hoisting up her shirt a bit, she settled back and let the nurse go ahead and put that gooey stuff on her stomach. Then the machine was placed over her belly and the doctor started the ultrasound.
“Everything looks good. Do you two want to know what the sex of the baby will be?”
It was a miracle that Daisy behaved properly through the whole ultrasound. It took a while, with the nurse giving notes. Here’s the baby’s head, and Here’s the baby’s arm, the baby’s leg… Severus was watching with Daisy on his lap, one hand gently wrapped around his wife’s. Daisy seemed to be really interested in the television. She asked a few questions, like How is my baby brother or sister on the tv? and The baby looks really weird. Why do we see the bones? Severus did his best to answer her questions quietly while they watched the baby moving on the television screen.
“Yes, I think so.” He said in response to the Nurse’s question. He squeezed Romana’s hand.
Romana was just surprised that Daisy hadn’t been pulling out tongue depression sticks and gloves and making a mess. This was much better. She asked her own questions of the doctor, whom gave a lot of really good answers. As long as the baby was healthy, that was the main part. The doctor was reassuring that the baby looked quite good, though he would have to do some more tests probably.
“You would be having.. a boy. See this?” he pointed to a shape on the screen. “That’s his um..” he didn’t know whether to say it in front of Daisy, so he just nodded slightly. “You’re having a boy, congratulations.”
Severus inhaled sharply at the news, though he was thrilled. A healthy, baby boy. He gave Daisy a hug. “Did you hear that, my love? A baby brother! You’re going to have a baby brother!”
A boy. A boy! Romana grinned brightly at the both of them. “A boy. That’s good. I mean I’m just glad the baby is healthy. Thank you, doctor.” She let someone clean her up so that she could put everything back together and then do some more tests and things. Then it was time to go.
“Okay so.. now we should actually think about names. What do you think Daisy? What should we name your little brother?”
The three of them were able to walk out together after a brief conversation with the ultrasound tech, or the doctor, or the nurses, or whoever it was that they needed to talk to. Severus picked up Daisy and carried her along as they walked out of the office and toward their car.
“Ummm… Mickey Mouse.” Daisy said to her mother in her adorable, 3-year-old voice. She was grinning, because she knew that this was a somewhat ridiculous suggestion.
Romana laughed a bit. There was a companion of the Doctor’s named Mickey. Maybe that was the real funny part to her. “Well I guess we’d have to start calling you Daisy Duck then,” she said and reached out to tickle the little girl.
There were a lot of changes coming up. Ones that she was really looking forward to, no matter what they named the baby.
Daisy laughed and curled up in Sev’s arms, her body twisting to the right and the left as her mother tickled her. Severus chuckled, too. Their family was nearly perfect. Would be, as soon as Baby Boy arrived.
