1: Protect Garrus/Tali/Liara. 2: Protect Wrex. 3: Lots of Little Blue Babies Step 4: Profit
Who: Tyra Shepard (narrative)
What: Shepard reflects on a dream. She might have lost it. Just a little.
Note: this was on loop while writing this.
When: This morning. Right around the same time as Scott's dream, since she see's the blast.
Where: Walking places.
Tyra didn't remember when she'd started walking, or how far she'd come. Everything around her looked wrong. Every building superimposed with rubble. In the edges of her vision she saw the Reapers landing, their powerful beams cutting swaths of destruction through the city. But when she looked, it was a clear night sky. There were few clouds, and a moon far overhead.
That damnable sound reverberated through her skull, and down her spine. She felt it before she heard it, heard it before she saw the Reapers cutting through the atmosphere and landing in the city.
She'd failed. She couldn't stop the assault on earth, and now everywhere she looked she saw the rubble and the husks and the fighting. Her finger trigger itched, and she reached behind her back for her pistol, but stopped herself. That wasn't a husk, that was a dog. That wasn't a collapsed house, it was perfectly intact.
The Normandy. She'd missed her something terrible, but she couldn't enjoy the feel of the deck beneath her feet. Not with so much death around her. She turned, looking out over the city that she was forced to leave. Forced to flee the fight. Her eyes fell on a pair of escape shuttles. The little boy she'd tried to help earlier stared back at her, and wordlessly she screamed for him to get in the shuttle, get to safety, get away, LIVE! He climbed on board, and the shuttles took off.
Shepard's heart stopped when the Reaper beam struck one, and then the other, and she knew in that instant, that she would carry that boy's face into her grave. He was the face of Earth, the face of everything she had failed to protect, and everything she still had to save.
That memory was the freshest, as she'd woken up right after. Shepard rubbed at her face, taking long, deep breaths to calm herself. Something flashed, to the east, and she turned to look at it. For a long, tense moment, she thought it was a Reaper beam. It was the same color. But it came from the ground, and disappeared without a trace.
She really was losing it. She'd walked for hours, and miles, grieving over a boy who's name she did't know, and a planet that was still very much intact around her. Rather than call a cab, she walked back home. Every step brought her more resolve. There was still hope for that Earth, and this one. Her grief turned to anger, her despair to determination.
First step, get Liara, Garrus and Tali under her watchful eye. Second step, call in another favor with Anderson to get security out to Urdnot Ranch. Third step,???? she wasn't sure, but probably involved lots of little blue babies. Fourth step? profit Save everything.
For the boy who died - and those blue babies she wanted.
