For twelve years, Scott raised his son, with Jean's help. He's her son too, genetically. Though the future is bleak, they're together and that's what matters while they're trapped in this hell hole. Nearly two thousand years in the future, as Slym and Redd, they raised Nathan. They never told him of their true identities, while constantly on the move as they fought against Apocalypse's empire. When Nathan slipped into a coma, he watched over him day and night, until he finally awoke.
They defeated Apocalypse, and then Redd disappeared, and Scott knew he would be sent home, again abandoning his son.
"You will never be alone. Not in your heart... not in the only way that truly matters... because I will be there. Because I love you, son. Remember that always! You will be many things to many people. Sometimes loved and respected. Other times feared and hated, almost always misunderstood. Someday, you’ll be a cable that unites the past with the present and future – yesterday with today and tomorrow. Nathan Christopher will be all those things… but he should know he’ll never be alone."
Years later, mutants became an endangered species over night. No more mutants. They were devestated, from tens of millions, to just a few hundred or less. The bigots of the world rejoiced, while the decimated population grieved. Scott watched as his school was torn apart from the inside, and then the depowered sent home - only to be murdered as their buses exploded.
The dream faded out and then in, and his words to Nathan came back to haunt him. A cable that unites the past with the present and the future. As he and his X-men..his family, his hope waged war for their very survival, it was the sacrifices that saved them. He'll carry their names with him forever. Ariel, Kurt Wagner. He remembered the events following Kurt's death. How close they'd come to extinction. He remembered Nathan Summers, who sacrificed himself to send his comrades home and stop the army pouring through the portal.
The pressure pounded in the back of Scotty's eyes as he woke, and he fumbled to pull the glasses on. This time it did not go away. He stumbled outside. Unable to contain the pain, he ripped his glasses off, a red beam shooting into the sky like a beacon. The sound of air being displaced shook the windows of the house and the light illuminated everything in a blinding red glow.
The beam faded, the glow in his eyes replaced by the brown of his irises. Panting for air, Scott slumped to his knees, still staring at the sky. Vaguely, he wondered if he'd hit the moon, then laughed as he wondered if Emma would think it romantic if he carved her name in it. The laughter grew a little hysterical for a few moments, and then died down.
"Nathan..." He wondered aloud. Was his son out there, somewhere? Was that the same Cable during the coming of Hope? It had to be. The feelings were the same. He had to have ..come back at some time. He was trusted with the future of their species, and not just because he was his son. Because he had earned that trust and respect.
Scott finally knew why he fought so hard, why he crossed those lines. Why the childish dream had seemed so dead and buried.
To protect those few hundred stragglers, to avenge the children murdered for what they had been born to be. He remembered their names. All of them. For Kurt Wagner. For the son he was so proud of.
Fresh tears fell.
