“So go away, research on your own and complete the paper by the end of next week” Sam said to her already standing students, “I won’t accept lame excuses” she added.
“What about clever ones?” one of her more cheeky students piped up
“Depends how clever” she replied, “If it’s the level of your last paper then that’s definitely edging more to lame”
She laughed as they moved out, ribbing their friend as they went. She smiled and shook her head before turning to gather her books and papers. Not noticing that one person remained at the back of the class.
“What about if they’re smarter than the teacher?” John Crichton drawled from the back of the classroom as he looked down at her. He was sat leaned back in his seat with his ankles crossed in front of him, looking for all the world like he owned the place.
Sam smiled before she even turned round, "Oh now that's a rarity" she teased, "not something I'm used to" She turned properly, "John Crichton what on earth are you doing here?" she smiled brightly.
"I was in the area, looking at houses," John shrugged as he got to his feet. "Saw that you had a gig here and figured Id drop by and see what you're teaching the kids these days," he teased, starting to walk down the auditorium to the front.
"Looking at houses?" she questioned, "Are you moving here?" she asked excitedly before adding, "And when were you going to tell me this?"
"Umm, about 5 seconds ago I guess," John laughed, dropping down from the bottom step with a smile on his face. "Yep I'm moving here to work, I'm teaching physics at Cal State," he told her.
"No way, that's incredible" Sam exclaimed, moving to hug him happily. "We should get coffee and you can tell me everything"
"It's so good to see you Sam!" John smiled as he returned her hug tightly. "Sounds great to me! You can tell me all about how you ended up here," he pulled back from her and ran his gaze over her. "You look good Sam."
"It's good to see you too" she said, "Not much to tell but you'll hear it all" she promised, "Charmer" she teased, "But you do too John, as always"
“What can I say, I try,” John replied good naturedly. “And I don’t believe there’s not much to tell, come on Sam! What happened to the firecracker who would beat the lecturers with the logic stick until they were weeping from mental fatigue?” he teased, lightly punching her on the arm.
Sam laughed, "She became the lecturer who is weeping from mental fatigue?" she suggested.
“Well, I always expected you to only accept the best and the brightest,” John winked at her. “So what’s it like living out here? Any word on what the surfs like?” he asked, jumping up to sit on her desk.
“I’m changing my mind. I need dumb students” she grinned, though really the only one to properly challenge her was Jane. “It’s...different. Some odd things happen around here John, very odd. Unexplainable even” she gave him a look when he asked about the surf, “I don’t personally know, of course. But there’s a few people on the net who surf so I guess it must be okay”
“Odd things? Oh come on Sam! You can’t say somethin’ as ominous as that and leave me hangin’!” John complained, his drawl becoming more pronounced as he did. “You’ve never been surfin’? Oh man! I’ve gotta take you out on the waves!”
Sam laughed, “Oh I could” she teased, “It’d be way more fun for me” then she shook her head, “Nope never. It doesn’t look like fun, almost drowning in the waves”
“You wouldn’t...I’d piss you off too much!” John grinned at her confidently. He had the ability to act like a child for far longer than Sam’s patience could hold out, or so their time together at college would seem to show. “You gotta try it Sam! It’s freeing! Where else would I rationalise all my data!” he told her, which was true, some of his best ideas had come to him while he was riding the waves.
“Okay that’s true” Sam agreed easily, remembering their college days very well. “I am fairly sure I’d be too busy worrying for my life to focus on anything else. And that’s coming from me. Who is always thinking about a million other things”
"You know it!" John grinned at her, feeling pleased with himself. "So we gonna go to a bar or a cafe for you to regale me with your tales?" he asked, hopping down from her desk. "Hopefully a bar, coz then I can convince you of the one truth through the medium of drink: that surfing is amazing for physicists!"
“Sure why not” Sam had no more classes that day and Lizzie was always telling her she needed to relax and let go a bit. If anybody could help her with that it would be John, he’d been half the reason she hadn’t been boring in college. “Come on, I’ve heard about this place which is supposed to be great but I’ve never been”
"Great! Lead the way!" he told her. "Want me to help carry anything?" he asked.
Sam shook her head, “I got it. Thankfully I have this room all the time so I get to leave my crap in it” she said as she grabbed her coat and handbag. Taking his arm they headed out to drink and catch up.
"Sweet deal, where we goin' anyway? Stayin' on campus or headin' off?" John asked, escorting Sam down the hallway like a proper Southern gentleman would do.
“Off campus” Sam replied, “Trust me I see enough of this place all day. Lizzie and I even go off campus for lunch sometimes to get a break” It was a lovely campus but it was still too easy for them to be interrupted by well meaning students.
"Lizzie? As in Elizabeth Weir? Your old roommate with a sti...who was a little uptight?" John corrected himself before he offended his friend.
Sam tried to look at John sternly but couldn’t keep it up for long and snorted a little laugh. “Yes Elizabeth Weir and she wasn’t that bad, John” Sam chided, “We happened to get jobs here at the same time so now we’re roommates again”
John laughed at Sam’s reaction. He’d liked Elizabeth, but when they’d been at college she had been more than a little uptight, it seemed that only Sam had really been able to get her to loosen up. “Ooo...destiny, I like it, it would explain me too,” he pointed out. “But three of us in one place is a bit too much of a coincidence, don’t ya think? Like some sort of….fate-hole,” he made up the word but it seemed to work.
“Fate-hole?” Sam looked at him with a smirk before bursting into laughter, “John Crichton for such a clever man you sometimes amaze me” she teased, “Although you may be right...in a way. Now you have to keep an open mind but I’m going to tell you about dreams” she said as they reached her car. The rest of the day was certainly going to be interesting.
