Who: Remus Lupin and Nina Pickering
When: 18th January
Where: Coffee shop
What: Werewolves hanging out
Rating/Warning: Low
Status: Complete
With yet another full moon behind them, Remus had decided to see how Nina had fared and they had decided to meet that weekend. Remus enjoyed meeting with Nina, knowing that there was someone else out there who knew what he was going through. Of course he didn’t like the fact that either of them had to actually turn into werewolves once a month, but if they had to then at least they weren’t alone. Aside from checking on her, Remus was curious as to what else was happening in her dreams.
Reaching the coffee shop they usually met at, Remus went inside and ordered a cup of tea then turned to scan the other patrons to see if Nina had arrived yet.
Nina was mostly recovered, she was tired but that was more because she’d been called into work as an emergency sooner after her transformation that she had liked. With her sense of smell heightened the smells in the ER had almost been overwhelming.
Entering the coffee shop very soon after Remus she smiled and waved as she joined the queue to order. Meeting him by the counter as she waited for her coffee, “Remus, it’s good to see you” she smiled, “How are you?”
“I’m good. How’re you, Nina?” Remus smiled as the blond sat down across from him. From what he could see, she appeared to be alright since the Full Moon, but that had also been a few days earlier, so if she had any problems after it, there likely wasn’t any evidence any longer, “How did you fair during the full moon?”
“I’m good thanks” Nina replied with a smile. “Oh about the usual. Got called into work earlier than I thought I would and I have to say the heightened sense of smell isn’t great when you’re in the ER. But I can’t really complain”
Remus knew how inconvenient the heightened sense of smell could be just after the full moon; in fact, in Remus’ case, he’d had a heightened sense of smell a few times even before he’d first transformed. “That would be inconvenient.” Remus was glad that the worst he had to deal with now were Sirius’ dirty socks and the garbage outside. He was glad he didn’t have the combined smells of all the apartment building any longer.
“It’s not great but it is what it is, I guess” Nina shrugged, “I just keep thinking it could be worse” which it could so she tried to always keep that in mind. “How about you Remus? Was this a good full moon for you?”
“It wasn’t bad. It’s been much better since I started taking the Wolfsbane.” Remus said, taking a sip of his tea, “And having Sirius there as Padfoot helps a lot as well.” Having the ability to keep control over his mind while transformed was a big help when it came to the full moons. He didn’t have to worry so much about possibly attacking someone.
“I imagine that’s pretty reassuring to have Sirius there without having to worry you’re going to hurt him. My friend Annie was with me the first time I transformed, she was a ghost so I couldn’t hurt her, but of course I don’t really remember anything of the transformation” Nina sipped her tea before asking, “Do...do you think your potion would work on people not from your dream world?”
Remus wasn’t sure if Nina was referring to Annie being a ghost in the waking world or the dream world, the first time she transformed, but he decided not to ask. When she asked about the wolfsbane, Remus thought for a moment, “I don’t see why not. Our situations seem to be very similar. The wolfsbane would help you to keep your mind during the transformation, so you would then remember what happens during it.”
Nina didn’t realise she hadn’t made it clear she meant her dreams, so far Annie was still alive and tangible, something which Nina hoped would stay that way. She nodded as he spoke, “I’d like that I think, I don’t like having gaps in my memory even if I know I can’t get out of the room I lock myself in”
Remus nodded, “I’ll ask my friend Severus about it. He makes it for me here as well as made it for me in the dreams.” Anything he could do to help Nina, he’d be happy to do. If the wolfsbane would work for her then that was even better.
“Thank you so much” Nina said, gratefully, “I think it’d just make things that bit easier knowing I wouldn’t lose myself completely to the creature each month”
“If it can help then I don’t want to be selfish and not offer,” Remus said, smiling, “It is strange, knowing what’s going on while you’re transformed, but it’s much better than having a chunk of time missing.” And knowing you wouldn’t accidently attack anyone made it even better.
Nina nodded, “That’s what I hate most of all. I can deal with the pain of transformation and everything else that goes along with it but the not knowing worries me. Logically I know I cannot get out of the room but there’s still that fear there”
Remus nodded, “I know what you mean. In my dreams, when I was a child, my friends learned how to become animals so during the full moon, when I was supposed to be in this shack on the grounds of our school, I’d run around with them and they would make sure I didn’t hurt anyone.” The presence of Padfoot, Prongs and Wormtail had calmed the beast inside Remus and while he vaguely recalled bits and pieces of those moments, but not the same way that he remembered things once he started taking the Wolfsbane in and out of the dreams. “Now, we simply stay in the basement, Sirius guards the door as Padfoot, but with the Wolfsbane, I don’t have a desire to escape.”
“You have incredible friends Remus and it must have made things just that bit more bearable” Nina said, she knew she’d never have managed without Annie being there the first time in her dream or having George understand. “You’re making me hope even more that it works, even if I don’t have a padfoot” she smiled.
“I honestly don’t see why it shouldn’t. As I said, it doesn’t seem as if we’re too different,” Remus hoped that the wolfsbane would work for Nina so that she would have a little bit of an easier time each month, “I’ll be sure to let you know what Severus says when I ask him.”
Nina nodded, “I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed” she said, “Thank you Remus, I’m very glad I met you. And not just because of the wolfsbane”
Remus smiled, “I’m also glad we met. It has made this experience that much easier.” While he had Sirius to help, it was nice to have someone else going through the same thing he was so that he wasn’t alone and he was happy to be able to be there for Nina.
