What are you working on?
Who: Tony Stark and Jane Foster
When: Mid January
Where: Tony Stark’s office
What: Chatting
Rating/Warning: Low/None
Status: Complete
Jane approached Tony Stark’s office with some trepidation. She wasn’t entirely sure why he’d called her up to his office, but one did not say no to the great Tony Stark when he summoned you. Wringing her hands together nervously, she knocked on his office door and waited.
There was a bit of a crash behind the door, and a flash from under the crack. A pause followed, in silence, and then the door flung open. Tony was standing there, looking slightly hassled, but grinning brightly. “Miss Foster. Punctuality is a merit not everyone possesses.” He said, then stepped aside so she could come inside.
Tony’s office was half lab. There were bits and bobs everywhere. Pieces of robotics and computers littered every surface area, except the desk--that was covered in blueprints. “Take a seat. I just wanted to check in with you about how your work is coming along.” She’d probably have to move some wires to find a chair.
To be honest, Jane felt more at home when she saw the state Tony’s lab was in. Since her dreams she had started building more of her own equipment, so to see someone else’s mind spread across their work area was quite comforting. “I’m doing fine, thank you Mr Stark. I got a load of results from the accelerator a couple of weeks before Christmas which I’m still reconciling, but I’m hoping to build something to test my theories once that’s done,” she smiled, picking up a spool of wires and laying them down on the floor before sitting in front of his desk.
“Good! That’s good. How was the accelerator working for you? Did you find everything you needed here?” He asked, slipping down into the desk chair. He moved some of the blueprints out of the way to try and find empty desk beneath, but there were open books and notepads all littered across the surface.
“It worked really well, thanks,” Jane grinned at him, holding her hands out as an offer to take the blueprints from him. “It’s given me so much data I almost don’t know what to do about it!” she laughed. “I’m kind of hoping for some more dreams so I can make some more progress, Dream-Jane seems a little bit further ahead with her research than Real-Jane,” she told him, a little sadly.
Tony handed over the blueprints. It was a first rendering of the suit that he and Jarvis were working on. He started to move other things out of the way. “Just find somewhere to put that, would you?” He asked, then flashed her a grin. “Glad you’re making progress. The Dreams do that for us, don’t they?”
Jane turned and placed the blueprints on the chair next to her before turning back to face and pushing her hair behind her ear, unable to help herself being a little nosy and catching a glimpse of the blueprints. “Thanks, it’s been hard work, but I think I’m finally starting to get somewhere,” she nodded to the blueprints beside her. “As, it seems, are you,” she smiled.
“Oh, just a new project.” Tony set a pile of books onto the floor beside his desk, and cleared some more space for note-taking. “Now… I just wanted to make sure you know that I’m available to you, should you need anything. New equipment, more time in the lab, whatever it is. Pepper says we need to make more accommodations for those who contract work with us.” He paused. “Unless you want to come work for me instead.”
“I…” Jane was struck dumb for a second as his offer sank in. “Wow, work for you? Doing what? I’ve got a few months left of my PhD left to complete but then I’m completely free,” she told him.
“Research. Lab Tech. I’ll take you on as an intern until you’ve got your degree, then we’ll find you a suitable home. You can jump from department to department, see where you fit best? That is, unless you have other plans for after your schooling.” Tony said, raising his eyebrow.
Jane laughed at that. "I don't know, I hadn't really given much thought to what I'd do afterwards, keep on building my experiments and trying to figure out wormholes I guess," she shrugged. "Working with you would be an honour," she told him.
Tony nodded. “We could use someone like you on our team.” He gave her a small smile. “I’ll have Pepper send you some documents, an official job offer with the usual non-disclosure agreements and whatnot. A non-competitive clause, things like that. She’s good at paperwork. Is there anything else?” He added, itching to get back to his blueprints.
"Wow, that sounds great!" Jane grinned at him. "Where would you want to start me out? Working on an existing project or my own work?" she asked, getting the feeling that he wanted to be working on his blueprints. It made her smile, she recognised the single-mindedness that came with a project, they shared that trait.
“We’ll start you out working with the accelerator, and then move you around as necessary to find the perfect fit. You’ll have to put your own project on hold for a bit, until we clear up some of the other things we’ve got going on. Give it say, six weeks? Then we’ll set you up with your own staff to continue your research.” He gave her a nod. “Sounds good? I’m sure you can work out the rest of the details with Pepper.”
“My own staff?” Jane all but gaped at him in amazement. “I...I...thank you Mr Stark!” she replied, hardly believing he was offering her everything she could ever want. “What about off the clock? I can keep working on my project in my spare time, right?”
“Of course. So long as you don’t break any of the equipment.” Tony said, logically. “Just make sure to clock in and out on time.” He winked. That was a joke. She’d be salaried. So long as she got her projects done on time he didn’t care when she worked.
“You are quite possibly the coolest boss,” Jane laughed with a shake of her head. “I uh...thank you,” she told him genuinely.
“You’re welcome. Now, go get to work. I’ve got things to do.” He gave her a grin, then grabbed the blueprints and spread them back out on his desk.
Jane nodded and got to her feet, unable to stop her curious eyes from running over the blueprints. "What are you working on?" she asked without really thinking.
“A suit. Made of metal.” Tony said without looking up at her. He was already using a pencil to make some notes on the blueprint from Jarvis. “...I’ll keep you updated.” He added, then gave her a quick grin again, and turned back down to his plans.
“Cool,” Jane’s admired, intrigued by the project but recognising when a fellow scientist needed space to work. “I’ll be in touch,” she said, heading out the door. Jane wasn’t worried about finishing her PhD anymore, she had a plan!
