Martha’s eyes shot open and she sat up, staring into the darkness of her bedroom, the sound of Mickey’s even breaths beside her as he slept. Mickey. Mickey had been in her dream. Everyone had been in her dream. The Earth had been stolen and they’d put it back with twenty six other planets. And that was all well and good, but what stood out most in her mind was that her and Mickey had finally crossed paths. Reaching towards her bedside table, Martha turned on the lamp then glanced over at where Mickey slept beside her. Was he dreaming too? It wouldn’t be the first time couples or friends had, had the same dream from what she’d seen on Valarnet.
“Mickey…” She placed her on his shoulder and shook him lightly in an attempt to wake him up. She’d be lying if she said that she wouldn’t be a little disappointed if he wasn’t having the same dream at that moment, because she would like it if they were on the same page with this sort of thing.
The shove on his shoulder was enough to rouse him out of sleep and he made an annoyed noise at having been woken up. He was having “dreams” and he wanted to see what happened next in them. He had temporarily forgotten where he was sleeping and when he rolled over he noticed Martha next to him. Then he remembered what his dreams had been - she was finally in them - did she have the same dreams? A confused look passed over his face as he squinted his eyes at her, “Yeah?”
“You weren’t just dreaming, were you?” Her brows rose as if that would indicate what sort of dreams she was talking about without actually saying it; not that she had to be subtle with Mickey, but she also didn’t want to come right out and say that he had been in her dream. “Also, sorry I woke you up.” She smirked and leaned down to give him a peck on the lips as if that would make up for waking him at whatever time in the morning it was. She hadn’t actually checked the time yet. She just knew that it was still dark out.
“Of course I was dreaming, I was asleep,” he quipped back before sticking out his tongue at her. He knew exactly what kind of dreaming she was inquiring about, but he wasn’t going to let her get away with it that easily. She had woken him up! So he reached a hand up to run it down his face in an attempt to wake up, but it didn’t work very well. However, the peck on the lips earned a please noise from him and he yawned after, “Yeah, I was having those kind of dreams. Not sure why you had to wake me up though.”
“Don’t be such a brat,” Martha reached over and pinched his side lightly then stared down at him, wondering if she should ask for specifics. He hadn’t said anything yet about her being in his dream, so it was possible that he hadn’t had the same dream, but she needed to know, “I was just dreaming too. What were you dreaming about?” Had her dream not woken her up this could have waited until morning, but until she found out if Mickey had been having the same dream, she didn’t think she would be able to fall back to sleep.
“Daleks, always daleks. A big battle, stolen planets. You were there though, I left with you and Jack at the end of everything,” he reached out and poked her playfully in the side. He had almost forgotten that she was there because she had woken him up just at that part when the three of them left to explore the great unknown. But then he wondered why she woke him up and his eyebrows raised a little, “What were you dreaming of?” Was it possible they were having the same dream and the same time? Did she finally dream of seeing him as well?
Martha smiled when she heard that and laid down next to him, her head on his chest, tipped back to look up at him, "I had the same one." Finally they knew how they met in the dreams, but of course that still left even more questions like now that they'd met, how did they get together? As of that point Martha was still engaged to someone else so they couldn't have just started dating, but Jack said that they wound up together in the dreams too, "It was nice to see everyone too." Not only did Martha and Mickey finally meet, but she got to meet Rose as well after hearing The Doctor talk about her for so long.
“Only the Doctor could bring around every single person that he’s travelled with together at one time. I’m just happy we managed to save the world once again,” he reached up to run a hand through her hair as her head rested on his chest. It was nice to finally reach that point where they saw each other in their dreams and didn’t have to wonder anymore when it would happen. He also sensed he was getting near the end of his dreams because he knew the Doctor had to regenerate at some point and he was starting his own life apart from the Doctor.
“So, what do you think happens from there? Seemed like Jack was offering us jobs with Torchwood.” Martha was still working for UNIT at that point, but Mickey had decided to stay in that dimension instead of going back to the alternate one he’d been in with Rose and her parents, so she wouldn’t really be surprised if he took Jack up on his offer. If their relationship in the waking world was anything to go by, then Mickey and Jack working together as a part of Torchwood would be rather amusing. She too felt that her dreams were nearing some kind of end. How exactly she knew that, she didn’t know, but it was a gut feeling and she wasn’t sure if she’d be relieved or upset when they ended.
“Not quite sure. I’m obviously trying to start a new life back in the regular dimension. I know that he has something to prove not being around Rose and that family, so maybe he’ll go to work with Jack. I do think something like Torchwood or UNIT would be a good fit,” he mused aloud as he tried to imagine where the dreams would go. If he had anything to say about it he knew that dream!Mickey would more than likely try to pursue dream!Martha if she was anything like the one he knew here. It was destiny more than likely and at least he could thank the Doctor for giving him someone new when he took Rose.
“You and Jack working together would be amusing. You two should have your own show.” She grinned, running her rings over Mickey’s chest, “You know like Cagney and Lacey.” That caused Martha to laugh softly at the mental image that gave her. “So how do you think we get together? Dream me is still engaged. Torrid affair?” She quirked a brow and tipped her head back to look up at him, smirking. She’d have to tell Jack that they finally met in the dreams and see if perhaps he let anything slip. Jack was good at that; accidentally letting details out that he didn’t mean to.
“Oh god, Jack and I would be a crazy reality show. Although I do like the idea of a Torchwood being formed here even if it’s not a real thing yet. Just helping figure out how these things are done are a great idea. And how do we get together? Well, obviously I am so charming that you just have to dump your boring fiancee,” when he caught her looking at him he couldn’t help but grin a little. He really wasn’t that charming here or in the dreams, but the two of them seemed to get along just fine, “I’m sure we’ll dream about that as well.”
“Don't even tempt me to follow the two of you around with a video camera, because I will and then I’ll send it in to some company to try and get the two of you an actual reality show.” She grinned, lifting herself up so she could kiss him again then laid back down so her head was closer to his instead of on his chest, “I think a Torchwood here makes a ton of sense. I mean, mad things are happening here all the time. Might as well have a group who can look into them. Or try to anyway.” She laughed at his suggestion about how they get together, “It’s possible. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, huh? How long do you think till we find out? Another six months?” She was glad that they had found each other, not only in the dreams, but in real life as well.
“That is just rude,” he reached down to playfully tickle her a little before settling back down with a laugh and knowing she could feel the rumble deep in his chest. He wanted to do something more important than work on computers and the dreams didn’t help that, “Exactly. We have knowledge from our dreams that could be useful if we ever need them to be. And who knows how long it will take. We’ll definitely have to wait and see. Maybe we should go back to sleep and see what we dream next?” At least this time in his life he had dreams to look forward to now.
Martha laughed as he tickled her then settled back down as well, “And with the two of you running around, you’ll probably need a doctor, so it’s a good thing I’ve told Jack I’m signing up.” She hoped that Jack managed to start up Torchwood and the three of them plus Ianto would make an interesting team and maybe someday Gwen, Owen and Tosh would show up. “That might be a good idea.” Sitting up, she reached over to turn off the lamp and for the first time noticed the Osterhagen Key sitting on the night stand. Had it been there when she’d woken up? She wasn’t sure, but she wasn’t about to dwell on it now. That was for the morning. Turning off the light, she laid back down next to Mickey, head on his shoulder. As she laid back down, there were three words that she wanted to say in that moment, but when she opened her mouth, instead she said, “Want pancakes for breakfast?”
“Sure, that would be lovely,” He leaned over to kiss the top of her head before he snuggled up with her. He would never get sick of falling asleep with her beside him and he hoped that their relationship would develop in the dreams so he would be able to experience this all the time. He wasn’t sure what the future held, but he knew that he couldn’t help but enjoy these moments with her and this life they were living now. With a happy sigh he closed his eyes and fell asleep.
