Who: Rachel Grey (Summers), Kitty Pryde
What: Hooking Rachel up with a Laptop.
When: 1/14, before the AU Kitty blew Rachel's mind.
Where: Summers Residence.
Rating/Warnings: PG, mostly!
Status: Complete!
Kitty had a laptop, with all the bells and whistles and a massive amount of space. She had it all set to get locked to Rachel’s fingerprint and retina, too. Because that’s what friends did. She was also looking forward to just hanging out with her.
So there were a ton of movies on it too, including one that she knew as the red-head’s all time favorite. At least in the dreams.
This situation was still a little weird to Rachel, though. Random women didn't usually introduce themselves to her on the internet, then meet up in real life and suddenly become something like a 'bestie'. Most women really couldn't stand her, honestly.
She wondered what the hell was wrong with Kitty that she kept coming back for more snark. Now the woman was bringing her a laptop. What was the catch? There had to be a catch. But she couldn't really hold onto the thought that there was a catch for long, honestly. The thought made her feel guilty. Like she should trust Kitty more than that. She just wished she understood why.
The least she could do in payment for the laptop was make a starbucks run. She remembered her friend's favorites from the last time they'd met up, and they were waiting on the kitchen counter when Kitty came in.
“Oh god I could smell that walking in!” Kitty bounced in and put the laptop on the table, and somehow managed to not hug the red-head. Honestly, she was so hungry for the kind of friendship they’d shared in the dreams that it was driving her nuts, but if there was one thing that Kitty had learned it was patience. Mostly. For the time being it was best to treat Rachel like she would any other normal friend.
“Now the computer isn’t perfect but it’s light enough to carry around and powerful enough to handle most things. I did some uhm. Tweaking.”
Rachel grinned and handed Kitty her coffee. She'd been dying for the brunette to get there just so she could break into hers. Now that Kitty had arrived she didn't spare another second before she'd pulled over her own gigantor coffee and took a long sip of it. Then she parked her butt on top of the kitchen table and pulled the laptop over.
It was pretty fucking awesome looking, really, "Is this a custom paint job, too? What'd you tweak? Are the tweaks legal?"
A pause, then, "Don't tell me that, I don't want to know."
Kitty sipped. Hard, then groaned. “Oh that’s good. And yeah it’s custom, and the tweaks are legal. As long as I don’t reverse engineer shit no one cares.” A pause, then, “The reversed engineered stuff is mine.” She winked. “Turn it on!!”
"You're way too happy about this. What if I hate it?" Rachel joked, while lifting up the lid and hitting the power button.
It was actually pretty hard to hate a laptop that was free and loaded with awesome stuff. Rachel wasn't a complete luddite, but she didn't really know what qualified as 'awesome stuff' anyway. Or what reverse engineering meant when it came to laptops.
It powered up quickly, and there was a light under the keys that glowed red.
"Sweet."
“Took a guess that you’d like that. If you hit that icon I saved a ton of movies. I took a shot in the dark at what you’d like. And there’s some music too, and that icon there will bring up a list of games.” If by lists Kitty meant a circle that spun open with the icons on them. It was something she coded herself. “Later I’ll show you how to make a custom list like this. For docs or whatever. New programs should go in the right spot though.”
Rachel stared at the screen. As far as she was concerned, Kitty was speaking in gibberish while the computer did magical wizard things. She was silent for a few seconds, then she took a long sip of coffee, and got up off the table, "OKay, yeah. I think you should take that laptop back with you and replace it with one that speaks English at me and looks familiar."
She rolled her eyes. “It’s basically windows with a more intuitive interface. You can even use your fingers on the screen to move things around.” She demonstrated with a grin. “Touch screen!”
"More intuitive." Rachel snorted, "You brought up a circle thingie and then more circle thingies. It was like... circle thingie inception. Circles inside circles with more thingies on them. What happened to 'there's an icon on my desktop that looks like it'll take me to World of Warcraft, let's double-click that'?"
She pointed a finger at the screen, waving it around in the air a bit, "And it's touch screen? Jesus, I'm going to be your laptop slave forever at this rate."
“Mission accomplished.” Kitty took Rachel’s hand and touched the redhead’s finger to the icon labeled ‘games’. “There’s your wow icon right there, silly person.”
"Okay but what are these other ones?" Rachel squinted at them. Kitty must have been using a custom set, because while some of them were hauntingly familiar, others weren't. The wow icon, for instance, had a Panda on it. She knew the latest expansion had been Pandaria, so that at least made sense.
"This one has a dragon and that one's got ... N7, Oh. Mass Effect. OKay."
"Yep. There's the new Tomb Raider which you absolutely need to play, and Mirror's Edge and...well a whole bunch. I might have gotten you your own Steam account with a billion games so you'll be set for life." She clapped Rachel on the back. Have you heard the good word about Lara Croft and Commander Shepard?
"... You're a very odd woman, you do realise that, right?" Rachel turned to Kitty to squint at her a bit, then turned back to the laptop with all the shinies on it, "I've heard really good things about all of those games, but it's like you're determined to be my best friend and also help me flunk out of college by spending all of my free time gaming instead."
It was mostly a joke. Rachel tapped around on the screen, trying to figure out the endless circles of menus of things. Sure enough, a lot of the music and movie choices Kitty'd pre-loaded onto the thing were things she loved.
Especially Imagine Me & You. That was possibly her favorite movie of all time, chick flick wise, "I can't believe you've got this movie on here."
“Oh, I tutor too,” Kitty joked back. She peered around Rachel’s shoulder and felt her face growing hot. “Well. It’s one of my favorite movies and just kind of seemed like something you’d like. I have I Can’t Think Straight on there too, actually, if you’re into Imagine Me & You.”
"Great, you can tutor me out of failing. Your girlfriend will start to wonder why it is she never sees you and then she'll kill me," Rachel joked. Kitty's proximity was really, really unsettling to her. Probably because it was filled with sparks of energy and made her feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Which was forbidden. So, so very forbidden. Hence, the girlfriend mention. Rikku seemed like an awesome person who didn't deserve any kind of relationship drama.
"I've never heard of that movie, no. But I seriously love Imagine Me & You. It's like... Okay seriously, if you don't think Lena Headey is hot there's something wrong with you."
“Then you’ll love I Can’t Think Straight!” Kitty grinned and sat on the table. “Lena Headey is amazing. Do you want The Sarah Connor Chronicles? Game of Thrones?” She waggled her eyebrows. “I can provide.”
"Hells yes. In for a penny, in for a pound, right?" Rachel grinned. The system was getting easier to figure out the more she played around with it.
"I only saw the first few episodes of Sarah Connor Chronicles, I'd love to see the rest. And anyone who says no to Game of Thrones doesn't know what they're missing. We should hook this up to the tv in my room and watch that movie. Dad gave me this AWESOME room, it opens right up onto the patio."
It was such a nice room that it almost counteracted how antsy she felt about settling down.
“Okay! What kind of tv did he spoil you with?” Kitty let Rachel pick up the laptop while she dug out the power brick. There was a nice leather case, with a really fancy laser mouse.
"It's a huge HD one. I think he's making up for lost time, you know?"
It wasn't that big, as far as HD tv's went these days, but it was huge in Rachel's opinion. She was careful with the laptop as she brought it to the bedroom. It wasn't that far away, but she didn't want to take any chances.
Her room was still pretty spartan, though she'd unpacked already. There were a few photos of various people she'd worked with, and a poster on the wall that she'd bought recently when registering for classes. The main focus was the tv on its stand and the PS3 under it.
She set the laptop down on her bed, then quickly went back for their coffees.
While Rachel did that, Kitty hooked up the computer. She’d show Rachel how to do this when she got back and was staring at the tv with a grin on her face. “I’m getting you a wireless keyboard and mouse so you can use the tv like a monitor sometimes. Be easier for movies too.”
"Awesome." Rachel returned with their coffees and some bags of junk food. Movies required junk food, right?
She pulled over a tray for them to put their snacks on, then made herself comfy on the bed, "But first, awesome lesbian movies."
