To say that Logan wasn’t exactly himself today would be the understatement of the year. Laura was worried, not just about Velma and the baby who had to deal with all of this, but for Logan, too. The guy was probably her father in some way - she didn’t really want to think about it too long - and she felt like she at least needed to make sure nothing happened to him.
So she’d decided to babysit, and Cass had helpfully come along. She’d had Cass stop for some beer on the way, thinking that maybe they could get him to drink some and it would calm him down. It couldn’t hurt to try, anyway? And it would probably be amusing to see his reaction.
Velma had been kind enough to let them in before taking off with Alyssa, and now they were standing in the kitchen with six cans of Guinness. Laura dangled them off of her finger like they were Logan bait, “Hey Logan, we brought you some beer!”
Cass had known Logan for just under a year now and in that time he’d always cursed like a sailor and been extremely grumbly, but he could be a big softy too. What he wasn’t was the way he was acting now and that was unsettling. So when Laura said she was going to check on him, Cass figured that she’d be safe going out with the other girl, plus she wanted to check on Logan too. When they stopped at the liqour store, Cass was glad for the fake ID that Jubilee had gotten her, because she wasn’t even twenty yet. Her birthday was in a little over a week, but that still wouldn’t make her old enough to buy alcohol without it. She was also glad that the guys behind the counter apparently didn’t watch gymnastics, because they didn’t recognize her.
“And you know how much you love beer,” Cass added as they stood in the kitchen.
Logan was thinner than usual, a lot more wirey and missing the facial hair. His hair was smoothed down and combed back in an almost preppy style. He was wearing a smart shirt. His cheekbones were prominent. And he was staring at them in abject horror. “Oh nonono you musn’t bring the devil water into my house!”
He took the beer from them and rushed over to the sink to dump it out.
Laura’d been prepared to flash her own ID if Cass didn’t have one, though if she’d been aware that Cass wasn’t actually 21 she probably wouldn’t have suggested it. And now that Logan was reacting like the cans of high-priced beer were Satan Himself, she couldn’t decide if the pit stop was worth it, or not.
She glanced at Cass for a few seconds and then rushed over to the sink to stop him, “This isn’t the devil’s water. This is brewed by monks in Ireland, God Himself blesses this water every day. With the blessedness of hops and grains and fermentation. Try a sip.”
If it weren’t for the fact that his appearance actually freaked her out a little, Cass probably would have laughed, but seeing him act this way was truly bizarre. When Logan tried to pour the beer out, Cass was close on Laura’s heels and being stronger than she once was, she tried pulling Logan back from the sink. She’d taken him down once or twice while sparring and that had been when he was quite a bit bigger than he currently was, so it shouldn’t have been too hard now, “Yeah, I mean, all the cool kids are doing it.” She wasn’t so sure that peer pressure was going to work on Logan, but it was worth a shot.
Logan was actually pulled back so easily that he lost his balance and was thrown to the ground. Whimpering, he backpedaled away from the crazed women, crashing into the table and sending it tipping over onto the floor.
Everything that had been previously on the table was now on the floor making a mess, but at least the beer was saved. Laura let out a bit of a sigh, and shook her head, "OKay. Calm down. We're not trying to scare you. You don't have to drink the blessed fermented water if you don't want to. Just don't pour it out, either."
This was worse than she thought. This was actually pretty bad. Laura was almost certain though that if she wasn't so worried she'd be laughing.
Cass hadn't expected Logan to be moved so easily and she cringed slightly as he crashed into the table. They'd have to fix that before Velma came back, "Logan, we're just here to help you. Promise. We're friends." It was crazy to think that this was the same man that she'd once gone to a strip club with.
He held up his hands and scrambled back further, crossing himself as if to ward off their demon satan powers. Girls were scary. Logan pulled himself to his feet and stumbled his way out of the kitchen to hide behind the couch.
"'Bring beer and come babysit Logan! Nothing can go wrong with THIS plan!'," Laura muttered, mocking herself. She sighed and let Logan go hide for now, focusing her attention on picking up the table. Hopefully it wasn't actually broken, "I think WE'RE going to need that beer. Maybe he'll calm down if we read to him from the bible."
If there even was a bible in this place. She could probably find one online if she had to. The idea of reading from a book like that wasn't that appealing to her, though. She scrunched up her nose a bit. They were definitely going to need to drink that beer.
It was probably a really good thing that it was Cass and Laura there and not Jubilee, because as much as Cass loved her best friend and knew that she'd only want to help Logan too, Jubilee had no filter and swore and talked about sex far too much for this Logan, "Maybe I should make something to eat. If he sees that, he might realize we're only here to help." Cass shrugged, not really sure what else to do.
From behind the couch there came another whimper. He’d started to build a pillow fort from the cushions and a throw blanket. His eyes gleamed animal like from within the safety of the darkness.
"He's acting like he's still mentally young. Is there macaroni and cheese to cook? Most children can't stay hiding too long when there's macaroni and cheese to eat," Laura replied, with a nod. She'd managed to lift the table up off the floor, and slid it back into the position it used to be. Thankfully, there didn't seem to be any marks on it.
Laura waved at the gleam of eyes that peeked out from the darkness of the pillow fort, then moved out of eyesight and opened one of the beer cans. She put the rest in the fridge for now, then started checking the cupboards for things for Cass to cook, "It IS getting to be lunch time. He'll be hungry eventually."
“There’s got to be something in here to cook,” Cass said, opening other cupboards until she found a box of macaroni and cheese, “Bingo!” She placed the box down on the counter then went to find a pan and filled it with water, “Can you get the milk and butter?” She glanced over at Laura as she set the pot on the stove and turned it on. Logan had been there for her so many times now that she felt it was only right to be there for him right now, even if he didn’t actually know it.
Mac and Cheese for those nights when you really wanted mac and cheese. Logan usually added beer to his. But then, he pretty much used beer as a spice. Except this Logan wasn’t coming out of his pillow fort for anything.
"Sure!" Laura opened the fridge and pushed the things in there around until the milk revealed itself. Mostly, there was beer in the fridge. It was almost like Vel didn't live there at all, but Laura knew that was silly.
It was also pretty clear that this current Logan hadn't opened up the fridge yet. Because if he had, the beer would have been sent to hell where it belonged, Laura figured. She pulled out the milk and butter and brought them over to Cass.
Then she glanced over at the fort, "I'll see if I can get him talking."
She walked over to the pillow fort and sat down next to it.
“Thanks,” Cass turned on the stove so the water could boil. She watched as Laura went to try and talk to Logan, hanging back herself. She didn’t want to overwhelm him again, so it was probably best if Laura went on her own.
Logan squinted from his fort, and dug in a little deeper. “Go away. Devil women.”
"This is a nice pillow fort you have here. It's not as structurally sound as you could make it, though. I could help you. I know a lot about forts." Laura took on a very calming tone, one she'd learned from babysitting in high school.
He growled, sounding a little bit more like himself. But just a little bit, if Logan sounded like a growling kitten.
Cass watched from where she stood against the doorframe of the living room, wishing there was something she could do to help more. They were totally out of their element here and coming at Logan would probably just cause him to stay in hiding longer and chances were, Velma wasn’t coming back tonight so it was going to be a long night for sure. “I’m gonna go check on the water.”
Laura considered the growling to be a good sign, though the fact that it was his only response was a little worrying. They probably did have a long night ahead of them.
She nodded at Cass, and pulled her phone out of her pocket, "Maybe you'll like a story. There is something that my mother used to read to me all the time. Do you like Pinocchio?"
She had the e-book on her phone, and she opened it up, "Pinocchio is my favorite. A boy made of wood who gets to be real. But he has to learn to be good, too, and not sin so much."
Logan wrinkled his nose, but the growling stopped. He seemed to settle into the pillow fort, as though ready for a long night.
Listening to Laura in the other room, Cass couldn’t help but laugh softly, thinking about the look Logan would give Laura under normal circumstances if she were to read him a fairytale. Once the water boiled, Cass poured the macaroni into the water and a few minutes later she was spooning the macaroni and cheese into a bowl.
“Logan, are you hungry?” She asked, carrying the bowl and a spoon into the livingroom and crouching down beside Laura.
Logan sniffed, then reached out a beefy paw, grabbed the bowl and yanked it into the fort.
Clearly, it was going to be a very long day and night parked outside the pillow fort. Laura was coming to this conclusion now, and judging by the look on Cass's face, her friend had already come to it herself.
She got up off the floor, and went to pour Logan a glass of milk. And get herself some more beer, "Do you want something to drink, Cass? We'll probably be pulling shifts in the living room."
Cass’ brows rose slightly as Logan snatched the bowl from her. This was going to be a long night indeed. “Yeah, I guess I’ll have one of those beers.” Cass hadn’t drank much beer, but right now she could definitely go for one and it’d be amusing later on when they told Logan how they’d drank all his beer while he cowered in a pillow fort behind the couch.
