Mulan had been worried when Aurora said she wanted to talk on the phone call. Like maybe Aurora was awkward or otherwise put off about her. But if there was one advantage it was that Mulan could relax herself a little bit. No guarding the expression on her face, just leaning back in her chair while waiting for Aurora to pick up.
It wasn’t that Aurora didn’t want to see Mulan, but more that she didn’t want the other woman to come all the way over to her place if Aurora was just going to fall asleep. She didn’t think it was far. So instead, she had suggested they talk on the phone until she felt like she was going to fall asleep. She still wasn’t entirely sure how she felt about Mulan, but she knew that she already cared about her on some level, so when her phone rang, her pulse sped up a little as she fumbled for her cell phone and swiped her finger over the screen then placed the phone to her ear, “Hi.”
“Hello,” Mulan sounded a little more breathless than she’d meant to, and her face turned red. She licked her lips. “I could still come over, if you like. If not, just get..comfortable.”
Oh that sounded wrong.
Aurora’s brows rose slightly, but she was already in bed, so she made herself comfortable. The tv was off now, but she still had the lamp on and planned to keep it on until she was ready to actually go to sleep, “So...how was your day?” Aurora didn’t talk on the phone much, so she was always a little awkward when she did use it.
“Long. I visited my brother and then joined some kids at one of the parks. Even though it’s winter they were still playing Soccer and I wanted to encourage them.” Mulan chuckled. “My knee still twinges a little.”
“Well, the snow is gone and it’s not that cold now, so I’m not surprised they were playing.” For a reason that Aurora couldn’t quite explain, hearing Mulan’s voice relaxed her and made her feel a little less paranoid after watching Cold Case Files. It was her own fault for watching it before bed and sure she probably could have gone down the hall to talk to Ruby for a few minutes, but then she would have had to go back to her apartment alone, “Wait, you just called it soccer. I thought it was football.”
Mulan laughed. It was a pleasant sound. "I didn't want to confuse you. I'm trying to adjust my language so people don't think I'm talking about the sport with all the pads." She got up and started to walk around, her legs to restless to stay still. Maybe she should change for bed too.
“Well, I would have known what you were talking about since you already told me before that you coached soccer,” Aurora said, running a hand through her hair and tossing it over the top of her pillow, “Is there anything you can do for your knee or do you just take meds?”
“Tylenol, mostly,” Mulan replied. “I don’t trust anything stronger and it’s not persistent enough to warrant that, anyway. Mostly it gets….weak.”
“Have you seen a doctor?” Aurora didn’t like thinking about Mulan in pain. She didn’t like thinking about any of her friends in pain, but Mulan most of all at the moment. “I mean recently.”
“No, I haven’t.” Mulan smiled softly. “One moment, I need to change.” She put the phone on speaker and set it down while she changed into her night shirt. She picked up the phone again and fell into bed. “Better… Now what bothered you the most, tonight?”
“Why not? They could probably give you something for your knee.” Aurora thought it was silly when people refused to go to the doctor for one reason or another when in the end the doctor would help and the person would feel better. She heard the rustling on the other end as Mulan changed, “Oh, just the thought of someone climbing through my window while I sleep, which is ridiculous really, because they’d need a really long ladder to reach my window.” It had figured that the story on Cold Case Files had been about women who lived alone being assaulted. She couldn’t have stopped on a repeat of Friends instead?
“Your country’s medical care leaves a lot to be desired,” she said softly. It didn’t matter. “Do you have something long? Like an umbrella? You could use it to keep the window in place. They wouldn’t be able to open it from the outside.
“No, it’s fine. I know that no one could actually get up to my window, but it’s just the fact that, that was what I happened to come across before I was about to go to bed that freaked me out a little,” Aurora said turning over onto her other side and moving the phone to her ear the wasn’t against the pillow, “They really shouldn’t air those shows at night. They’re bound to give people nightmares.”
“What were you doing watching that?” Mulan pulled her blankets up over her body until she was cocooned and comfortable. At least until something wet touched her feet and she let out a shout, dropping the phone.
“I was flipping through the channels and I stopped on it and was curious about what they were talking about. Big mistake,” Aurora was about to say something else when Mulan suddenly screamed on the other end, causing her to sit up quickly, her own heart racing, “Mulan! Are you okay?” Considering what they were talking about, tons of images went through Aurora’s mind, none of them good.
“Oh god! I’m okay, I’m okay don’t panic! The dog was under the covers and she licked my foot!” She hadn’t been expecting that. Her head plopped against her pillow as the dog crawled up to snuggle in against her side.
“That’s actually kind of adorable,” Aurora said, laughing softly, “What kind of dog do you have?” She had been thinking about getting a cat recently, but hadn’t had the time lately. Knowing that Mulan wasn’t in any danger, Aurora laid back down, relaxing again.
“She’s a kind of mutt. I’m pretty sure she’s at least part cocker spaniel. She has the really floppy ears.” Mulan started to play with the floppy ears and let out a soft laugh.
"What's her name?" She asked, smiling as she imagined Mulan snuggling up with a dog. She hadn't thought of the other woman as an animal person, but it was nice to know that she liked animals, "Have you had her long?"
“Ming-na,” she replied, smiling as she said it. “I don’t know why, but the name felt approriate. And she’s only been around a few weeks but the vet checked her out. She’s fine except for needing to put on some weight. I kind of found her on the street.”
“That’s pretty.” Aurora yawned as she got a little more comfortable again, “I’m glad she found you and isn’t still out on the street. Anything could have happened to her out there.” There were far too many stories about stray animals that made Aurora sad to hear, but she was happy that this one had, had a happy ending.
“I know I’ll mess this up, but I want to give her a shot. She’s so friendly and in need of love, and I have… a lot to give.” Mulan blushed and bit her lip.
“I don’t think you’ll mess it up. If you really want to then you’ll make it work.” Aurora smiled and yawned again, “I think I may be starting to get sleepy now.” She didn’t want to fall asleep on Mulan, but at the same time she didn’t think she was quite ready to hang up the phone. It would be just her luck to hang up and then suddenly find herself wide awake.
Mulan’s face broke into a smile at the sound of Aurora yawning. For some reason it triggered all her adorable switches. “I’ll stay with you until I hear you snoring,” She promised, rolling onto her side and pulling the dog against her chest. She yawned, then the dog yawned.
“Hey, I don’t snore.” Aurora laughed, closing her eyes. “But I do think I might fall asleep soon.” Talking to Mulan had helped a lot to help her relax and she felt like she would have to do something to thank her sometime soon, “Thanks for making me feel not so paranoid.”
“You know I’d protect you from anything,” She said quietly. “Even your own shadow.” She smiled, ignoring the way Aurora’s voice sent heat coursing through her center. She’d lay there listening to Aurora breathe all night, if she could get away with it.
