beside</i> him, was a novelty that would never wear off. He curled an arm around Zelda as his eyes opened, humming a content good morning sound.
There was an intimacy between them that Zelda wasn’t used to, but she absolutely loved. They didn’t have to be physically intimate--though, that part was very nice when it happened--for the bond between them to grow. Just laying around, holding one another was enough. It made her feel warm and safe, and connected to him in a way she’d never felt with another living person. This morning, as consciousness came back to her slowly, she broke into a bright grin that she just couldn’t shake. Things couldn’t be more perfect than being wrapped up in Link’s arms. “Morning.” She said, then turned to press a kiss against his face. Wherever she could reach, she wasn’t picky.
They’d already shared a dream and Link hoped there would be more to come, even if the dreams did involve dangerous circumstances. He’d protect her. And he’d rely on her to guide the way.
Link propped himself up on his elbow and squinted out the white-washed window. “Is it still snowing?” he asked. He couldn’t tell from this angle. Good thing he’d already harvested his artichoke crop.
“I dunno.” Zelda turned her head to look out the window, but all she could see was the pale, grey, bright sky. “Does it matter? It’s still really cold.” She said, and cuddled close against him again. “It makes it feel like Christmas.”
“I know, my house is drafty,” said Link, snuggling so close it was like he was trying to get inside her. (Er, well…) “You’re not freezing, are you?” His feet were like foot-cicles.
Not that Zelda minded really. She liked it when he was so close it was like he was trying to get inside her. (She liked it when he was inside her, too.) “No. Not really.” She said. Sighed, really. And she grinned a little, cuddling close. “I’m still under the covers, though. We’ll see how I feel when we have to get out and get dressed.” She grinned.
“Then… let’s not,” he said. His eyes were clear and he was more awake now, but what point was there in getting out of bed? None that he could come up with. Oh… “Um, unless you’re hungry. Are you hungry?”
“No.” Zelda repeated. She shook her head once to emphasize the point. “Not hungry. I just want to stay here with you. Unless you’re hungry?” She said, hoping she wasn’t keeping him from anything. Honestly, she didn’t really care what they were doing, so long as they were together. And it was warm and comfortable under the covers. “We can go make breakfast if you want.”
Link was a twenty-year-old boy. He was always hungry. But staying in bed with Zelda was much more appealing. He shook his head, closing his eyes as he pushed himself even closer. He nuzzled her neck. “No. I want to stay here. All the time.”
Zelda gave a little laugh, though she wasn’t pulling away. There wasn’t even a thought in her brain about pulling away. “I imagine we might have to get up eventually. Y’know. Food and… toilet. Those horrible necessities that will draw us apart.” She said, teasing.
With his eyes still closed, Link grinned as though he was in the midst of a happy dream. He was. A daydream, at this point, but a dream nonetheless. A few moments passed quietly. He could feel his speed of his heartbeat increase. “Well, then… you should just stay here. You should move in.”
Zelda’s eyes had fallen closed, too. She was so happy, so content. It wasn’t like she was sleepy, though, she felt more awake and alive than ever. And then Link’s heartbeat sped up. She could feel it through his skin against her own. She opened her eyes at the sound of his words and turned to look up at him. “Move in? Here?”
“Yeah, like… um…” He still sounded like he was in a bit of a daze, but his heart was pounding. Either thing was possibly responsible for the fact that speech was suddenly more difficult than usual. “Us… You and me. In the same house.”
“In this house?” Zelda asked, looking up into his face. She could tell this was hard for him, and suddenly it felt hard for her, too. The truth of the matter was that she wanted to live with him. Very badly. She wanted to wake up in his arms every morning, and fall asleep next to him every night. But she always imagined living with him at her house, and not on the farm. “Here, with you? Together.” She said. As much as she had reservations and they’d have to work things out, she couldn’t help the excitement that was growing within her. It was lighting up her face. “Like, every day?”
Link’s truth was that he couldn’t leave the farm. Not now, certainly, and possibly not ever. His parents had given their lives here and it was his duty and joy to see their dream live on. At last, he opened his eyes again, and gulped. “Is that… Could you see yourself doing that?”
Zelda hesitated. She didn’t really need to, she knew the answer. But she wanted to make sure that she thought about it, that she didn’t just jump into something because she was head over heels in love with him. And this truth, the truth of this matter was that she could. She wanted to always be with him, no matter where they were. Her house was just a house. A nice house, sure, but just a house. This house meant so much to Link, it would be an honor to get to live here with him.
“Of course.” She said, the excitement finally taking over and making her nearly giddy. “Of course I can.”
Link gulped again for good measure. The truth was, he didn’t just want Zelda to move in, he wanted to marry her. And the way she was looking at him just then, the way her voice sounded when she said ‘Of course’, well it made him want to propose right then and there. But he didn’t have a ring and he wanted to do thing right. It couldn’t be totally spur of the moment.
“You wouldn’t mind living on a farm?” he asked.
If he’d asked her to marry him right then and there, she would have said yes. A thousand times yes. But the fact that he wanted to do it right would make her feel even more loved.
“No,” Zelda said. And she didn’t hesitate this time. She was grinning so much it was splitting her face now. “I want to be with you. I don’t care where we live.” She could bring a lot to his farm, too. She had resources to help with… well, everything. Hiring workers to make the place more efficient, renovations to upgrade the equipment and the facility… Not that she knew a whole lot about farming, but she wanted to help. And to learn.
Link's face had turned red, partly from anxiety, partly from excitement. She had plenty of reasons to live in the city, and he would have understood if Zelda had said no. But if she was willing to give farm life a try, he'd turn this place into a castle for her.
"What do you think the tabloids will say?" he asked.
Zelda laughed. That was the last sentence she ever thought she’d hear him say. “Who cares what the tabloids will say?” She asked, then leaned in to kiss his lips. Gently. “They’ll probably ask when the baby’s due.” It slipped out before she could stop it.
Link chuckled. Then, his eyes bulged. Then, he somehow did both at once, and, finally, he gulped. "Wait... What?" That was a joke, wasn't it? He occasionally noticed magazines in the supermarket. They were always writing about things like baby bumps and teen moms.
Zelda laughed again. Though, her cheeks were incredibly pink, and she felt embarrassed about that silly joke. If that's what it was. Wishful thinking? "You know, how they always have some sort of ridiculous gossip that isn't even true."
He chuckled again, this time more easily. It was just a joke and that was a relief. He wanted to have kids, and not a million years from now, but it would have been quite a bombshell if Zelda was being serious. “Oh, yeah. They do. Well… one thing at a time.”
"One big thing at a time." Zelda grinned, and snuggled in against him again. "How soon should I move in? The new year? I can put my house up for rent, and hopefully get a tenant by then."
“I can help you move your stuff,” Link said, letting her warmth seep into him. Zelda probably had ‘people’ ready to do that sort of thing for her, but he wanted to be more involved with the move. “...You should bring over that hot tub, too.”
Zelda leaned in to tap a kiss against his lips. She definitely had ‘people’ who would come and help her pack and move everything. But the fact that he wanted to warmed her heart. “Absolutely. I don’t go anywhere without my hot tub.”
