It was just after midnight when Mischa had hidden three immaculately wrapped with colorful paper, ribbons in the blind spot above the doorway leaving a long red ribbon for keen-eyed Hannibal or Abigail to find, and hung the fragrant handmade evergreen Christmas wreath on the front door before slipping away. The first had a small tag labeled "For Hannibal" inside the wrapped box and nestled amid tissue paper was this treasure. The second was smaller tagged simply "For Abigail," but no less spectacularly wrapped; this one was a hard-shelled oblong case inside was a beautiful sentiment for the newest Lecter. The last was two boxes in a small cooler with variety of French macarons and the other a Yule log for the two to share in the morning.
She yawned against her palm, not having well slept since Hannibal had spoken about what befell her in his dreams- to say it hadn't affected her would be an outright lie, when in truth, the revelation had shaken her to her core and broken her heart- but Mischa was a Lecter and had steeled herself, soldiering through her holiday orders, applying a liberal amount to mask the dark circles and blush to add color to her paler complexion to face the people she would meet at her small shop until all orders had been picked up, and exhaustion had forced her hand and stilled Mischa into unwilling sleep.
Tonight would be no different except the shop would be closed for the next day; tomorrow the world would look a little brighter even if it was just the afterglow of the children's Midnight Christmas mass or the glow of Christmas lights or the crackling fireplace dancing against the glass ornaments and then as she lie down on the chaise lounge sofa, a warm cup of Darjeeling tea resting on the coffee table, perhaps she could just close her eyes and rest...
