Who: Ash and Jessie
When: December
Where: Ash’ place
What: Catching up and delivering cookies
Rating/Warning: Low/None
Status: Complete

Jessie had finished with her last furry patient of the day and, after popping home for a quick shower and change, was back out and on her way to where Ash lived. It had been too long since she had seen him. And although she was happy he was back she was also sad that his dream had been put on hold. It was never a nice feeling, especially since he’d been working so hard for it.

She’d made cookies - which had actually turned out quite well - and had stopped at the coffee shop to pick up a couple of fun, chocolatey drinks to have with them. Skipping up the path she knocked on the door and waited.

Ash smiled when he spotted her. He opened the door and caught her in a careful hug, both because of his shoulder, which was aching, and because of her burden. He grinned as he pulled back. “Come in! Hi!” He grinned wide and admired her as he stepped aside. She was one of the best friends he knew, and she was amazing.

She returned the hug just as carefully and smiled, "Hey, thanks" she said stepping inside, "How are you feeling?" she asked him, looking him over for signs of pain or discomfort.

“Tired but good. Some days the arm doesn’t bother me at all. Some days are achey ones.” Like today. He smiled as he led her in toward the living room-bedroom. He lived in a theoretically one bedroom place, but the wall separating the bedroom from the front area had been removed at some point in the past and Ash did not mind.

“Sit down, make yourself at home.”

Jessie nodded, “Make sure you take it easy. If you need any help with anything you can always just give me a call” she told him.

She sat and settled herself before holding up the tin, “I made cookies, I think they came out okay but I’m new to baking so I take no responsibility if they taste horrible” she grinned as she set the tin down on a small table along with the drinks, “And those just seemed perfect to go with them” she added.

“I’m sure they are.” Ash eyed the tin, grinning. “You always did have an eye toward things that went together well.” He smiled. He admired her ability to work hard and put things together so well.

Jessie laughed, “I try” she replied with a shrug. She wasn’t as good as James in that regard, her expertise lay in animals but she did work hard to succeed in whatever she put her mind to. Even if it was just making cookies and buying hot chocolate drinks.

“You do well, and you like animals, so you rock.” Robin, woken by her arrival, wandered out. When he saw who it was, the dog came over and snuffled a greeting to her, licking at one of her hands. He was a big doberman-retriever mix, and he was smart, smarter than most dogs Ash had met. He was Ash’s second trainee, the first of which had been given to a specialist in the fire department, and he was becoming a true companion to Ash.

“Looks like Robin likes you.”

Jessie laughed happily, “I’d make a rubbish vet if I didn’t like animals” she teased easily before grinned brightly at Robin and scratching behind his ears while he nuzzled his head in her lap.

“He’s gorgeous” she said, “Aren’t you?” she added to the dog.

Robin wuffled and licked her hand. He knew when he was being admired and nosed against her, sniffing her approvingly. “He is and he knows it. He’s also very smart, smarter than most dogs. And he’s gentle, so he is a good companion.” He grinned as he snapped his fingers. “Okay, Robin, treats are in your den, blue bag.” He signed just so as he spoke and Robin barked and loped off.

“I change where his treats are every day so he can learn to follow directions for both missions and gain.”

“Incredible. Truly remarkable. You’ve done so well with him Ash” Jessie smiled, “It’s a wonderful thing to train assistant animals. You definitely have a natural talent”

“Thank you. I learned from my father. He taught me everything before he passed. Now I’m just trying to become the best I can be.” He smiled at her, eyes warm. “Thank you, Jessie, You have a sure touch, also. He doesn’t just like everyone you know.”

He nodded.

Jessie smiled, "I've always loved animals" she admitted, "I prefer them to people a lot of the time. They're honest and loyal. You know they won't lie either. I used to take in strays all the time, my mom didn't know what to do" she chuckled at the memory.

Ash grinned at her, “Which just means you’re smart, too.” He nodded, eyes bright. “Thank you, Jessie.”

He thought her quite awesome and a good friend.

"What are you thanking me for?" she laughed as she ruffled his hair softly, "Silly" she added affectionately.

“For being awesome.” He poked her gently in turn. “Now, how’ve you been?” Ash wanted to make her feel at home as he raised his drink to her.

She giggled and slipped her shoes off before bringing her feet under her on the sofa, it wasn’t hard to feel relaxed and at home in Ash’s company. “Good, I’ve been good. Surgery is thriving, I have the best friends and oh I even started dreaming. You and James are in them you know” she grinned.

“You too? I’m starting to feel left out.” He wondered what he would dream about, if he did, and now he was curious. “I’m not sure I want to dream, really.”

“I’m sure you’ll have them soon even if you don’t want them” Jessie told him patting his arm, “It seems to work that way around here”

Ash made a face. “But why? I’m perfectly content without them!” He nodded as he listened to her. “Bah humbug.” Then he grinned at her,. “We should definitely all get together, you, me, and James, sometime.”

“I’m afraid it doesn’t work that way” she sympathised but then nodded with a smile at his suggestion, “Oh we should, that’s a wonderful idea”

Ash kissed her ear, then nodded. “Just the three of us being crazy together. Or something.” He chuckled. “It would and could be fun, I think.”
