Myrcella had been happy when Jeremy had agreed to go Christmas Tree shopping, although the Starks had decorated the house she hadn’t really been very involved. Helping Jeremy meant it could kind of be their tree which gave her a nice feeling inside.
She still had to tell him that her mum had arranged for her to fly home on 20th December for Christmas, she would be happy to see her mum and dad and even Tommen but she was going to miss Jeremy and her friends a lot. She hadn’t realised how independent she had become until then. She found herself wishing for snow but this was California and it never snowed and it would never be enough to ground a plane.
Still, she was here now and hunting down the perfect tree with her boyfriend - she could at least enjoy that.
Christmas this year was going to be pretty crappy no matter what, as far as Jeremy was concerned. It was his first Christmas without their parents, Katherine was off somewhere and he and Elena still weren’t really getting along. She spent most of her time at Damon’s, which left Jeremy alone at the house most nights and when she was home, he spent most of his time in his room. He was still trying to deal with the dreams he’d been having and contemplating whether or not to tell Elena about them as well as trying to find someone to talk to about everything that had been going on since his parents had died.
When he was with Myrcella though, like today, he was able to put everything else behind him and try and be upbeat for his girlfriend, because he knew that she just wanted him to be happy. She had been the one who had suggested he get a Christmas tree and he was glad that she had, because he wouldn’t have done it on his own. “I think this is the latest I’ve ever gone looking for a Christmas tree. Usually we’re those people who get it like right after Thanksgiving.”
“I’ve actually never been to chose one” Myrcella admitted, “Normally we get home from school and the house has been turned into a winter wonderland. We did take it in turns to put the star on top of the tree though” Joffrey never really cared but she and Tommen always loved it when it was their turn.
“Did you always decorate your tree together?” she asked him, squeezing his hand to let him know he didn’t have to tell her but she would love to hear if he did.
Jeremy nodded, “Even Katherine would help. It was probably the only time of year where we would all help with something and no one was fighting.” He squeezed her hand back, glad that she was there and was trying to make his Christmas not suck so much. “So, in other words, your parents have people come in and decorate?” Having met Myrcella’s mother and brothers, he didn’t really see Joffrey as the decorating type. He wouldn’t say it outloud, but he was pretty sure that Joffrey was worse than Katherine.
“That’s really nice. A good memory” she told him, he needed those in her opinion. To remember the good, fun times with his family. “Pretty much, yeah. I mean Tommen and I wouldn’t have minded helping but it was easier for mum if it was done already I guess” She assumed it would be the same when she got home this year, she hoped Tommen had been allowed to top the tree.
Jeremy nodded, “It is. I’m glad that I have some good memories. I mean, there’s a lot of them, but it still hurts to really think about them,” It just reminded him about how things had changed so drastically and about how he’d found his parents. “Do you have a big house back home?” He’d never really asked Myrcella about her life back in England, because they usually spent their time watching movies or talking about things in the present instead of the past.
She lent her head against his arm, “It’ll take time but it’ll hurt a little less I think” she said softly, it would never be completely pain free but everything she’d read indicated that it did get easier. Though since Jeremy had found them it would take longer for him, she really hoped he’d find someone he could talk to soon. “Huge” she admitted, on a little bit of a sigh. “Too big really but it has to ‘look right’. Makes it easier to avoid Joff when we need to though” she smiled at him.
“I know. It’s just hard since everyone else has just left. Katherine left and Elena is hardly around. And when she is around, Damon is usually around and I just really don’t like that guy.” It had to do partly with the fact that Damon had been sleeping with Katherine before she was even legal and partly because if it weren’t for Damon, Elena would be around more. “I also wish that my Aunt Jenna or Uncle John would come out here.” He was glad that Myrcella was going to be spending Christmas with her family, but it just reminded him about how he’d probably be alone.
"You're going to have to be around him if Elena loves him, he might become your brother in law if it gets serious" she rubbed her fingers across his where they were holding hands so he knew she wasn't attacking him or anything. She just needed to point out the possibility, she didn't want him to lose his sister because he didn't like the boyfriend. "Have you asked them?" she said, "maybe they aren't sure if you'd like to see them"
Elena marrying Damon was the last thing he wanted to think about right now, "God I hope not." He knew that Myrcella wasn't trying to attack him or anything, but the idea of Elena marrying Damon was not what he thought of as a good idea. "They were here for the funerals then left. I guess it's just hard since my aunt came to take care of us in the dreams, after our parents died. And my uncle is around now in the dreams. I mean. With at least one of them here, I wouldn't feel so alone."
Myrcella accepted that and didn't push the issue, it was Christmas after all and since she'd be going home she didn't want them to part on a bad note because she was interfering. "I wish I could stay so you wouldn't be alone, but I will call you everyday, I promise"
“I wish you could too, but I know your mother wants you home. We can always do a belated Christmas thing.” Jeremy didn’t know what, but he was sure they could do something when she came back. “Hey, what do you think of that one?” He asked, pointing out a tree that wasn’t too big, but was still taller than he was and appeared to be full all around with no bare spots.
Myrcella smiled, “That would be nice” she nodded, a little celebration just for them was the next best thing to actually seeing each other on the day. “Oh it looks good, the branches don’t droop much and it seems pretty sturdy” she said as she looked it over.
Jeremy examined the tree a little more then nodded, "Yeah. I think this is a good one." He glanced back at Myrcella, "you're gonna come back and help me decorate, right?" If Elena and Katherine weren't around at least he had Myrcella to help and at the moment he preferred her company to that of his sisters'.
Myrcella nodded happily, "Yes, please. I'd love to" she said, "Maybe I could make us dinner too" she suggested with a smile. Eating together in front of a decorated tree would be a nice ending to their day.
"We'd probably have to swing by the grocery store on the way to my house, but I like the sound of that." Jeremy had done very little cooking for himself over the last few months; most of the cooking was done on the rare occasion that Elena was home, so Myrcella cooking sounded good to him. "I'll just find someone who works here then we'll get going. You guard the tree." He smirked, feeling better than he had earlier and gave his girlfriend a quick kiss before going to find someone to help him with the tree.
