Neena hated being in the hospital. She got really anxious, and she wanted to bail as soon as she could. The c-section had gone smoothly, and thank to the drugs she was feeling okay, but she was still anxious.
So she texted Leonard while Thomas was away. She didn’t want to interrupt his work, but if she panicked and fled she’d tear open her stitches and nobody wanted that.
McCoy had a lot of time between patients and surgeries. Normally it was filled with finishing paperwork, filing, putting together schedules for his department, and a lot of other things. Today he got the text, and headed to Neena’s room.
Neena was fussing over Luke when Leonard got there. She smiled at him, waving a little. “Hey. Hope I’m not interrupting anything. How have you been, Leonard?”
“Busy. This place sure keeps me busy.” McCoy said, stepping into the room. He folded his arms across his chest and hovered at the end of the hospital bed. “How about you?”
“Same.” She said, chuckling a little. It hurt to laugh, so it ended quickly and with a wince. “Had a baby. That was pretty exhausting. Traveled in time, got my ass kicked two or three times. I faked my death, once.” She shook her head at herself. “I’m an idiot.”
McCoy simply blinked at her. “...sounds like you’ve had your hands full.” Travelling in time? Faking her death? Oh. And baby. Baby. Huh. He glanced down at the baby, then back to her. “...faked your own death huh?”
“Yeah. It seemed like a really good idea at the time.” Neena said, chuckling a little. “Your little girl settled in okay?”
“Yeah. Things worked out remarkably well. It surprised us both. Well, me more than her, I think.” McCoy said, leaning against the back of a chair in the room. “What’d you name this one?” He added, motioning toward the baby.
“This one.” Neena said with a snerk. “Like I’ve got a ton of kids running around.” She grinned at him. “Luke Alexander Raith.”
“Well, I figure ‘this one’ is better than ‘that one’?” McCoy said, raising an eyebrow. He shrugged his shoulders and broke into a smile. “Kids are great. You’re gonna have a lot of fun.”
“Yeah, bet we are.” She smiled at Leonard. “He’s the cutest baby ever, even if he is all wrinkly and shit.”
“He’s a very cute baby.” McCoy agreed with a nod. “Feel like I should have brought you something. A onesie or… whatever.” His wife had done all of that stuff with Joanna so he really had no idea what he was supposed to bring. Also, this was a different circumstance.
Neena waved her hand dismissively. “Just congratulate me. That’s all I expect. I am interrupting your work and all.” She was glad he’d come to talk to her. She needed more sensible people in her life. “He’s going to be drowning in presents from his aunt and uncle, I’m sure.”
“Congratulations, then.” McCoy said. He nodded again, once, as if that sealed the deal. “I think it’s a baby’s job to be spoiled by his relatives. I know mine was, back in the day.” For a moment he paused and wondered if he was ever going to have a baby again. Maybe with Elizabeth. That was a somewhat strange thought. McCoy considered himself too old for that sort of thing, but what if she wanted to start a family?
“You’re not that old. She’s only four or something like that, right?” Neena teased. “That’s hardly back in the day.”
“Eleven, actually. She’s staying with me this school year. Not sure how we’re really doing but things seem to be going well. We’re still in the honeymoon phase, I suppose.” He said, leaning back against the wall and folding his arms across his chest. “So, yes, things from just slightly over a decade ago seem like forever has passed.”
Neena blinked, then tried to remember who had a kid that little. Oh yeah, Cora used to be that young. Oh well. “Alright, I’ll give you that.”
“I wish I had more advice for you, but… I really don’t. Follow your doctor’s orders, and don’t be too proud to ask for help. People want to help you.” McCoy said, his ‘doctorly’ voice fading a bit into a softer one.
Neena nodded, "That's the trick, huh? I'm working on it. I have a good motivator, now." She looked over at Luke. "You're good people, Leonard."
McCoy chuckled softly, pulling himself up to his full height once more. “You know what they say about nice guys, right?” He walked over to her, and cautiously brought one hand to rest on her shoulder in a supportive way. “You know how to reach me if you need anything.”
She patted his hand. “One in the hand is worth two in the bush?” She asked, with a smirk. “Take care of yourself, Leonard.”
