Ariel had decided to take up life-guarding courses. She figured it would be a great way to get a job over the summer, or maybe even before then, and so far she was really enjoying it. The only problem was that the classes were offered a bit outside her usual stomping ground, so it was taking a bit of time to get used to what was around her. She knew the important things, though, like where to get a good and quick lunch.
With her class done for the day, she had definitely worked up an appetite, and sat sipping at her soda while she waited for her order to be called. It was going to be so good.
Percy had spent the morning attempting to study, but as it would happen his ADHD, dyslexia and his more recent dreams were all making it very difficult for him to concentrate. Sure, he could have gone to the tutoring center or to ask Annabeth for help, but really the last thing Percy wanted to be doing was studying. In fact, he was hungry and wanted something besides cafeteria food, so he decided to take a break and head over to one of the local eateries.
He’d just ordered and was leaning against the pick up counter, sipping on his drink and scanning his facebook on his phone while he waited.
Apparently, she was thirsty, too, because Ariel had reached the bottom of her drink before she’d realized it. Getting the last few good slurps out of it, she hopped up and made her way to the counter to get a refill. Along the way, they called out an order that sounded like hers, so she hurried her steps a bit more. She was sure her stomach was going to start growling any minute now.
The order also sounded like Percy’s, which was surprising since he’d just placed his order, but he wasn’t going to complain about it. The sooner he could eat the better. Turning to face the pick up counter, Percy didn’t see the red headed girl who was also approaching the counter, which put them on a direct course for a collision.
And there was a collision, and Ariel was suddenly glad her drink cup wasn’t full anymore, because the poor guy would probably be covered in root beer. “Oh - Geez, I’m so sorry,” she said quickly. “Are you all right?”
"Crap! No, I'm sorry." Percy said, looking the girl over to make sure that he hadn't hurt her somehow, "Are you alright?" This was definitely something he was not going to tell Annabeth about or chances were she would tease him about being more careful when he was standing still or something.
“Yes, I’m fine, thank you!” Maybe just a bit startled, because Ariel ended up laughing. “Sorry, I’m a total clutz or something. Oh my gosh. Sorry.”
Percy shook his head, the guy behind the counter was giving them a look like this was the most interesting thing he’d seen all day, “I should have been watching what I was doing.” He was just glad that the other girl was alright, because the last thing he needed was for her to go tell her friends that some jerk almost knocked her over, “You’re sure you’re alright though? You’re not gonna go tell your dad some guy almost knocked you over, right?” Now that would be worse than her telling her friends.
It really would probably be worse if Ariel told her dad. Luckily, she wasn’t, so she shook her head. “No, no definitely not.” She actually had to almost laugh at that. “Sorry, I’m just such a space cadet. My mind is all food food food right now.”
"What a coincidence. Mine too." Percy smirked, glad that he hadn't hurt her when they'd collided. At that moment another order, exactly the same as the one that had caused their collision, was called, "I think it's possible that we ordered the same thing."
She just looked amused, then her eyes got wide before she laughed. “Wow. What are the chances even. I mean, I applaud your commendable taste in food.”
Percy laughed at her compliment and he nodded, “You know what they say, great minds think a like.” He reached to take his tray from the guy behind the counter then moved to let the girl get her’s. “Of course there are some people who would argue that my mind isn’t too great.” Sometimes Percy, himself, was one of those people on account of his ADD and dyslexia, but on a whole he thought his mind was a pretty good one.
“Psssh,” Ariel said, rolling her eyes a little as she got her own food. “People are silly. I think everyone’s got something great in their brains now and then.”
It was strange, Percy had only just met this girl and it had only been about five minutes or something, but he already liked her. Not liked her liked her, because he had a girlfriend, but this girl seemed pretty cool, “I’m Percy, by the way. Now if you’re gonna bad mouth me, I’m not just that jerk who almost knocked you over.” He smirked as he moved aside so that she could go back to her table. He was curious if she went to USC too, because the school was so big he’d never know it.
“Nope, now you’re the jerk Percy who almost knocked me over,” she said, looking pleased. “I’m Ariel. It’s really nice to meet you. And, don’t worry, I’ll make sure to spread reports of this incident all over the internet,” she teased.
Percy laughed as he balanced the contents of his tray, “Good. I’m not from around here, so I don’t want to wind up with a reputation for knocking girls over.” It was strange, part of him was glad he and Ariel had collided, because Percy had a hard time talking to people sometimes and even after five months in school, he didn’t really talk to anyone much aside from Annabeth. “It was nice to meet you too. Do you go to USC?” If she did then maybe they could hang out again sometime. Would Annabeth get jealous if he hung out with another girl? He hadn’t actually thought about that possibility,
“Nah, I’m definitely too nice.” Ariel grabbed her own tray, then shook her head. “No. I’m doing my lifeguard training, actually. But the only pool that has classes that suit my schedule is nearby, so I come out here. But I’m guessing that you go to USC? That’s neat. What do you study?” She hoped she wasn’t being nosy.
It was almost ironic that Ariel was taking lifeguard classes and here he was afraid of water. It really was something he was going to have to try and get over if there was the possibility that he might develop powers that were completely water based. “I’m studying video game development. And minoring in business.” He didn’t think she was being nosy at all.
“Really? That’s so cool. It sounds like a lot of fun. Well, the video game part, anyway.” Business could be fun, too, Ariel figured, but when compared to designing games it seemed hard to compare. “Oh. I should maybe let you eat, before all this gets cold.” She looked almost embarrassed to have continued to take up his time.
"It will be once I start taking classes for my major. This semester has been just the basics," Percy couldn't wait until he started taking the computer design classes, "Yeah, I should let you get to your lunch too. It was nice to meet you, Ariel."
She nodded, hoping that it will be fun and not a total bust for Percy. “Yeah, it was nice running into you!” Ariel paused. “Oh my god. I’m sorry. I was trying to be funny. I’m leaving now,” she said, laughing. “Enjoy your lunch, Percy!” Ariel gave him a smile and headed back to her table.
