It seemed like Darcy and Roy were kind of a thing now, though they hadn’t really talked about it. She didn’t know if it was a thing. He seemed to like her. She was sure that she was going to fuck it up somehow because that’s what she always did. It was Christmas though, so she was trying not to think of this whole thing as something awful. It would be nice. Dammit.
They were out with Lian, looking at the decorations at the Grove. It was something that she hadn’t ever done before, never feeling the need to. They were nice decorations though. “Do you want to get some hot chocolate before we start walking around? I know it’s not cold or anything but..” she shrugged.
Before they moved to Orange County, Roy and Lian had lived a little closer to Los Angeles, so going to The Grove wasn’t that out of the way and honestly, he didn’t mind driving an hour if it made Lian happy. That and the fact that Darcy had agreed to come along made the outing that much better. He really liked Darcy and he was pretty sure that Lian had suggested inviting Darcy, because she knew it. Lian was very observant most of the time.
“Hot chocolate sounds like a good idea to me,” Roy smirked over at Darcy then glanced around for the closest shop, “Over there.” He said, gesturing towards a coffee shop that he knew sold hot chocolate too.
Driving didn’t really bug Darcy as much as it did to some Californians. It was a small price to pay for hanging out with people that she liked. She didn’t quite know what this was, and she certainly didn’t know how to do the whole dating someone who had a kid thing. She was pretty sure that she would be a horrible mother. Even worse than being a girlfriend. But whatever. No negativity.
“I like how they at least try to make it seem like it’s forty degrees colder than it is, but everyone is still in shorts and short sleeved shirts.”
Roy laughed as he took Lian’s hand so that they wouldn’t get separated as they headed over to the coffee shop, “I do see a few hoodies. You know us Californians, it gets below seventy and we think it’s freezing.” He grinned and pulled the door open for Lian and Darcy to go in ahead of him. Roy Harper was a lot of things and a gentleman was one of them. “But I know what you mean. It does kind of suck living in a place where it doesn’t really get cold at Christmas. Have you ever seen actual snow?”
“Oh god I know, it’s crazy. People in the north are like wearing short sleeves while out in a snow storm and two feet of snow. People are crazy no matter what. They don’t know what it means to be hot, and we don’t know what it means to be cold.” Darcy laughed and shook her head. She didn’t mind Christmas in California though. “Only once, when I was going cross country with my sister. Road trip. It was awful, but we did see some snow. I think in Michigan? Never again. Or at least never again in a car with my sister. The snow wasn’t the bad part.”
“Did you get out and play in it?” Lian asked once they were in the shop, looking over at Darcy from the other side of Roy. She really did like Darcy and could tell that her father liked her too, but obviously not in the same way, but Lian wanted her father to be happy Darcy made him happy right now.
“We only had a white Christmas one year. We have family up in Minnesota and when Lian was like five, we and my parents went there for Christmas and it snowed. She was more excited about the snow then her presents.” Roy smirked as they reached the counter and he ordered three hot chocolates then glanced back at Darcy, “Did you want anything extra in yours?”
"Yeah we did. Or well I did. It was fun, but not as much fun as playing in snow with other people," she told Lian. Darcy liked the kid, as much as she knew her. She just tried to treat her like an adult because that was all she knew how to do.
She remembered when she used to be more excited for snow. Of course she never got snow, so there was that. "Peppermint in mine, thanks."
“I wish it would snow here,” Lian said as Roy told the barista to put whip cream on one of the hot chocolates, which would be Lian’s. Roy had a good balance of treating Lian as both a kid and an equal. He knew where to draw the line and so far he hadn’t had to be very strict with his daughter, because she very rarely did anything that he needed to punish her for. Roy had definitely lucked out. Then again, she was only ten; she still had eight more years to become a rebellious teenager.
“Didn’t it snow here last year? Some freak storm that only hit Orange County?” Roy asked as he paid for the hot chocolates. “I think the news claimed it had something to do with global warming.”
“So do I,” she agreed with Lian. Yeah she didn’t know exactly how to treat a kid like a kid. Darcy just needed some practice. It did seem like Lian was a really good kid though, so she wasn’t too worried. Not to mention that Roy seemed like a good dad. “Oh um.. you know, maybe? Sh - heck I can’t remember.” Ugh she was bad at this whole not cursing thing.
“Probably but I’m sure it’s just because Orange County is crazy.”
When the barista handed over the hot chocolates, Roy passed Darcy and Lian their’s then picked up his own, “Crazy might be an understatement. I don’t understand how these things happen, but from the looks of it, no one does.” Roy gestured towards the door so they could continue looking at the decorations and he knew that Lian wanted to try to find a Christmas present for his parents.
Taking her hot chocolate, she sipped it carefully to make sure she didn’t burn her tongue. Yeah that was good. Even if it wasn’t cold outside. “I’m pretty sure that we’re on a hellmouth. That’s why all the crazy stuff happens. One of those mysteries of the universe.” That’s what she chose to believe. She followed them out towards where they kept the decorations and all of the shopping. “So have you got all your shopping done?”
“Pretty much,” Roy said, sipping his hot chocolate as they walked, “Lian just needs to find something for my parents.” He was looking forward to his parents coming down to their house for Christmas so he could show off a little bit and he knew that Lian was looking forward to showing them her rabbit, “How’s your shopping coming along?”
“Um.. non existent. I mean I don’t really have anyone to shop for. I don’t really get along with my family. I have some friends. I’ve got their presents and stuff.” Okay so she had two friends, and she got their presents. Jane and Thor. Darcy didn’t know how to handle Loki. She had always gotten him a present before but she hadn’t spoken to him in months.
“Then that means you’re done.” Roy wasn’t expecting anything from Darcy, because they weren’t really officially dating, but he’d still gotten her the chocolates, because he wanted to try and make her Christmas a good one, “Are you seeing your friends on Christmas Eve?” It was his subtle way of finding out if she was doing anything on Christmas Eve, because if she wasn’t then he was going to invite her over like he had on Thanksgiving.
“Yup. I’m pretty easy like that.” She was so glad that she didn’t have to get a bunch of presents for people. Darcy didn’t know if she should be getting Roy anything though. Maybe she’d get him something small. They were friends at the very least. “Well I live with Jane. And Thor is usually on location shooting some movie or something, so it’s just me and Jane. I don’t know what we’re doing. Besides sitting around and acting like it’s any other day.”
“Well, if you and Jane find yourselves looking for something to do on Christmas Eve, you’re welcome to come over our place.” Roy smirked and took a sip of his hot chocolate, missing the tiny smile that crossed Lian’s lips at the same time, “My parents are coming over, but you know what they say, the more the merrier.”
“Oh well thanks. I’ll ask Jane what she wants to do.” Though knowing Jane, she would just prefer to be working. Darcy didn’t know. “Well just let me know if it interrupts into family time. I totally get that.” Even if she didn’t really have a family and didn’t know a damn thing about family time at all.
“You wouldn’t be interrupting anything.” Lian said, glancing around Roy to Darcy, “It’d be good because then they’d know that daddy has friends and isn’t just working and spending all his free time with me.”
Roy couldn’t help but laugh at that and shake his head a bit. He was no longer surprised by anything that came out of Lian’s mouth, because she took after him far too much. “The child speaks the truth. They worry that I spend too much time working or with Lian and don’t have a life of my own.” Of course his parents didn’t want Roy to just leave Lian with babysitters so he could go bar hopping or anything like that, but pretty much his entire adult life had been devoted to doing things for Lian and with Lian and they wanted him to be able to have a personal life as well. They knew that Roy was able to balance things and wouldn’t neglect one thing for another.
Ahh that old chestnut. Why did parents always do that? With all of their ‘you should get out more’ and ‘you should meet people’ or whatever. Darcy laughed a little since Roy was laughing. She didn’t want to come across like an ass or anything. “I get that. Parents are kind of weird like that.” No doubt that Roy would worry about that for Lian when they were that age too. “We’ll come over then to make sure that everyone has friends.”
“Fantastic.” Roy’s smile was bright and genuine at the prospect of Darcy coming over for Christmas Eve and it’d be fun to get to meet one of her friends at the same time, “You’d think my parents would be so worried about my social life at my age, but they’re still at it. I guess they never really stop meddling and worrying, huh?
Somewhere in the back of her mind, Darcy realized that this meant that she was going to meet his parents. Yikes. But she would think about that and freak out about it later. “Well look at it this way, are you ever going to stop worrying about her and making sure she’s okay? It’s the same thing. I think. Parents generally either care too much or not at all.”
“Fair enough,” Roy look a sip of his hot chocolate. Darcy made a good point. Of course he hoped that Lian’s situation would be different from his own; he didn’t want to be a grandfather too soon after all, “You’re very wise, Darcy Lewis.” As they walked, the back of his hand brushed against hers and without thinking, he slid his hand into hers.
She couldn’t help but laugh a little at his words. “Yeah well, I’m an old soul. That’s what my grandmother used to say.” It was nice though. That she could give words of comfort. When his hand brushed up against hers, she tried not to look surprised or startled. It wasn’t bad or anything, just unexpected. Huh. Well that was new. Her fingers slid around his and she held on. Holding hands. Yeah she could do that.
When she didn't pull away, a small smile spread across Roy's lips and he took a sip of his hot chocolate to hide it, not wanting to look too smug, "So, how about we get Lian's shopping done so that we can then enjoy all the decorations without having to rush around."
“That sounds like a good plan to me.” She smiled a bit. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all. Only time would tell.
