Alistair was still so new to the area that he relied on google maps to find things including coffee shops, which should have been ridiculous since you could throw a stone and hit a coffee shop no matter where you were in Orange County, but that was exactly what Alistair was doing as he walked down the street, glancing down at his phone every few seconds to watch the line and arrow that indicated he was going the right way.
Zev was walking the opposite way when he saw a face that was immediately familiar and made him smile. Oh, Alistair. It was hard to think of someone more sweet and loveable than the prince, really. So he paused and cleared his throat a little. “Do you need help with directions?”
It wasn’t the first time someone had asked if he needed help, but the familiar voice and accent cause Alistair’s eyes to widen slightly and his heart rate to speed up. It wasn’t possible. No, it was just someone who sounded like Zevran Arainai. However, when Alistair lifted his gaze from the screen of his smart phone to the man in front of him he found that it really was Zevran Arainai. A man who Alistair had already seen naked and having sex on more than one occasion. How was this even possible? “Um….I….yeah, I was looking for coffee,” Oh real smooth Alistair. He internally kicked himself as his cheeks flushed slightly and he hoped that the random chill in the air could be blamed for it.
“I know a few good places, if you would like my advice.” Zev noticed the blush and couldn’t help but smirk. Did Alistair recognize him? Did Alistair know who he was beyond the Valarnet? He put his hands into his jacket pockets and hoped that his friend decided to come along with him.
Did Alistair know Zevran? That was one way or putting it. Alistair didn’t actually own any of Zevran’s movies, because porn, gay or straight, was the last thing he needed anyone finding. Besides, wasn’t that what the internet was for? To watch porn without anyone finding it? Never in a million years had he thought he’d have the opportunity to actually talk to, let alone have coffee with, Zevran Arainai, but now he was getting that chance and all he could do was stare at the other man for another moment or two. He was shorter than Alistair had thought, but that in no way affected his looks, which were even better looking in person, “Ah...yeah. Sure.” It still wasn’t a complete sentence, but it was something.
“Wonderful!” Zevran liked that he could make Alistair blush, just like in the dreams. Only this time it had happened without teasing. He wondered why, but didn’t let his thoughts rest for too long on any one idea. He didn’t know Alistair well enough to comment. It was an interesting juxtaposition - knowing someone well in the dreams, but not at all while waking. Zev was curious to find out more.
“You know, Alistair, we do have things in common,” Zev grinned darkly. He let that sentence hang in the air, watching the other man’s panic build. “We both seem to like the snow!” Old habits died hard.
Alistair opened his mouth to respond, but found that he didn’t quite know how to respond to Zevran’s statement. “I...we do?” As he spoke, he slid his phone into his pocket, brows knitting together slightly in confusion, “And how would you know that?” Having grown up primarily in California, Alistair had never seen it snow like this anywhere but in the mountains when his family would go on ski trips.
“You are out and about. Most people who dislike it seem to have taken to being polar bears and just hiding.” Zev smiled, walking with Alistair. “There is a place a few blocks up from here, we will not be out in it for much longer.”
“Oh, yeah, I guess you’re right.” Alistair glanced over at the other man, still finding it hard to believe that he was actually walking down the street with Zevran Arainai. Logically, he knew he should stop referring to him by his full name in his head, but he just couldn’t stop, “Or, I just really want coffee and don’t have a coffee maker yet.” Alistair still needed to buy quite a lot of things for his new place, but at the moment shopping, with the Christmas rush, was the last thing he wanted to do. So overpriced coffee it was.
“If that is so, you must be an addict!” Zev smiled and pulled his jacket a bit tighter around his thin frame. “Though I suppose there are a lot of things that are much, much worse. How has your move been?” He remembered talking to Alistair on the web and was thrilled that he’d moved here at all.
“Maybe.” Alistair shrugged. Considering some of the things that other politician’s children were addicted to, coffee was tame in comparison. At least he wasn’t snorting cocaine or anything. “It’s been going well. It was a bit of a struggle, but I’m managing,” Was a famous porn star really asking him about the state of his move? He was beginning to think that he’d made a very good choice in moving to Orange County. “Other than a coffee maker, I need to pick up a few more things and I should be all set.”
“Nothing a trip to the Target will not cure,” Zev said cheerfully. He tucked his hair behind his pointed ears, tattoos visible in the bright sunshine. “It is why I have never moved, I am terrible at it. Moving from Spain was enough for me.” He shuffled his leather boots in the snow a bit, playing as much as he could.
Alistair nodded, “Yeah, but I’m sure Target is crazy right now.” Maybe he’d just have to suck it up and go and get it over with. “I’ve also got to figure out where the closest Target is. I don’t really know where anything is around here, hence the reason I was using googlemaps to try and find a coffee place.” Yes, it probably sounded kind of lame, but what else was he supposed to say?
“I am sure it is. Do you have Amazon Prime? You could order things.” Zev pointed out the coffee shop he had in mind, guiding Alistair toward it by running and sliding on a patch of ice, whooping loudly.
“That’s a good idea actually. I hadn’t thought of that.” Alistair would have to look into that when he got home later on. It would be a lot easier than going to the store. He wasn’t sure what Zevran was doing when he first took off, but as he slid on the patch of ice, Alistair worried, for a moment, that he was going to fall, but when he slid gracefully across the patch of ice, Alistair couldn’t help but clap as he approached him, “That was pretty cool.”
“Thank you! I have good balance,” Zev bowed. Most of it was from the dreams, as were the poisoning skills, the knife skills, and the ability to move nearly undetected, but who was counting?
He held the door open for Alistair once they got to the coffee shop, smiling. “I also insist I pay for your drink. New friends get treated when they move, yes?”
“Obviously. I would have fallen on my ass.” Alistair said as he stepped into the coffee shop then glanced back at Zevran, “You really don’t have to do that.” Okay, now he had to be dreaming. Not only was he hanging out with Zevran Arainai, but now he was offering to pay for his coffee. Alistair might have to pinch himself.
“Please, allow me to do so. Why are you blushing?” Zev cocked his head to the side.
“What? I’m not.” Alistair’s eyes widened slightly and he fought the urge to bring a hand up to his cheeks to hide the blush, “It’s probably just from the cold.” Zevran had to realize, by now, that Alistair had recognized him from his movies. What other reason would Alistair have to be blushing around him, if not for that?
“Which of my films did you see, then?” Zev couldn’t help but grin as he asked, inwardly finding the whole situation hysterical.
And there it was. The cat was out of the bag. He could have continued to try and deny it, but he’d only wind up blushing even more and he’d just come off as even more of a loser, “Um...a couple different ones.” He ran a hand through his hair, dropping his gaze from Zevran’s eyes to a spot over his shoulder somewhere, “I’m not really sure which ones specifically.”
“Were they the ones where I was with ladies or gentlemen?” Zev couldn’t help waggling his eyebrows. “Do not worry, you do not have to say.”
Well how was he supposed to not answer that question? If he said he’d rather not say then it’d be obvious, so either way Zevran was going to know, “A little bit of both.” The flush on Alistair’s cheeks this time couldn’t be blamed on the cold since they had been inside long enough. Of course now he wasn’t entirely sure what to say, for fear that he’d make himself look like an even bigger loser.
Zev’s own eyes went wide. He’d not expected that, and he opened his mouth to say something but found he actually didn’t have anything to say. “I - oh.” He just turned and cleared his throat. “What sort of coffee would you like?”
Alistair was starting to think that maybe he just should have tried to lie, because now things were bound to become awkward and once Zevran bought his coffee he’d probably make up some excuse why he had to leave and Alistair would just be some story he told people later on. Running a hand through his hair, he told Zevran what kind of coffee he wanted then hung back a little, mentally kicking himself.
Zev turned around to face Alistair, smiling. “Are you allowed to go out to dinner with men? May I ask you?” He hadn’t asked someone on a proper date in a long time, and queuing up to pay for Alistair’s coffee gave the other man - the prince of his very literal dreams - time to decide.
Either he was actually dreaming or something was playing a joke on him, because that was literally the last thing he’d ever expected to come out of the other man’s mouth. Was Zevran actually asking Alistair out? No, he had to have heard him wrong. Things like this just didn’t happen to Alistair. “I...you want to go out with me?” If he were back in Sacramento he’d decline right away lest someone find out who he his father was and go to the newspapers.
Coffees in hand, Zevran nodded and smiled. “Yes, actually. Why?” Was it such a shock?
“I just...we just met. You don’t even know me,” Of course wasn’t that the whole point of a date? Or dinner especially? Getting to know someone you might not know very well? Most of the dates that Alistair had been on over the years had been set up my his father and the fathers of whichever girl would look best with him at any given time. Who would be the best for him to be seen with. He’d never actually been asked out before so this was completely new territory for him.
“That would be the point of going out to dinner,” Zevran beamed. He handed Alistair his coffee, motioning to a table so they could sit down. “Talking, getting to know each other. Chatting.” He shrugged. “What did you think they were for?”
Alistair took the cup from Zevran and followed him to the table, “No, I know. I just…” His gaze was on his cup as he tried to decide just how truthful he should be, “I’ve never gone out with a guy before. I couldn’t.” He picked up his cup and took a sip of the steaming liquid without elaborating.
“Your father, yes. Do you want to? You may tell me no. Or we can go out simply as friends. It does not have to be romantic.” Even though it was pretty obvious Alistair wanted it to be. Sipping his own coffee, Zev couldn’t help but smile.
Alistair nodded, “My father. Yes.” Wasn’t Maric the reason he’d finally decided to move though? Hadn’t he moved so that he could do things like go out with men if the situation arose? Of course Zevran wasn’t just any man. Zevran was a famous porn star and Alistair was never going to get this chance again, “No. I mean yes. Yes, I’d like to go out with you.”
Blinking, the elf grinned. “Truly? Good!” He wondered if they were going out as the friends option or something else. Alistair from his dreams being romantically interested in him wasn’t something that Zev had ever thought about. It was exciting, and he tried not to grin too stupidly.
"Yeah." Alistair nodded. He knew that if his father found out that he was going out to dinner with a porn star, and a male one at that, he'd be furious, but Alistair had moved so that he could have his own life for a chance and not have to do everything his father wanted.
