I’m kinda always on, remember?
Who: Kitty and Rikku
What: Holiday planning and snuggling
When: recently
Where: Kitty's flat
Status: complete
Rating: PG
It was almost time for winter break and Kitty was looking forward to the time she was going to be able to spend with the kids. The flat was decorated for both the holidays of the household, and Kitty really liked how festive everything looked. Even though it wasn’t the house anymore, it was their home.
She was currently attempting to bake while waiting for Rikku to come over.
Rikku had indeed come over, wearing jeans and a cropped t-shirt that exposed more of her stomach than she thought it did, with a Santa hat on her head and her goggles around her neck. She wasn’t aware of it, but her eyes had gone green with swirls, but she didn’t really care. Her arms were full of wrapped presents and the air smelled cold. It made her happy.
Kitty opened the door and grinned at her. She thought Rikku looked adorable, and hot, and she was glad the kids weren’t home. “Santa Rikku delivers, but which present is mine?”
“The one with the hat on it, duuuuh.” Rikku made a kissyface for Kitty. She did have a real gift for Kitty, but it was in her hands and she couldn’t get to it.
“Well I look forward to unwrapping that. I’m Jewish, it’s already been Channakuh I get you early,” she said, grinning as she helped Rikku with the presents.
That made Rikku laugh. “Are the little ones around? If so, you might have to wait.”
“Nope, they went to a friend’s place after school.” Kitty bounced back to Rikku to glomp her.
“Oh, good.” Rikku wrapped her arms around Kitty and snogged her, sighing contentedly. She let her newly green eyes meet Kitty’s brown ones. “How was your Chanukah?”
“Pretty quiet, actually.” She lifted a hand to stroke some hair out of Rikku’s cheek.
“That’s not a bad thing.” Rikku smiled, pulling out one of the gifts and handing it to Kitty. It was an electronic picture frame that Rikku had loaded with pictures of Kitty and her loved ones - the twins, Xi’an, herself, and some of her friends, Facebook was awesome.
She stroked the frame with one finger and then kissed it, leaning into Rikku and snuggling in against her. “God, you’re amazing, you know that? You’re such a sweetheart…”
“I thought you’d like it. And you can always change the pictures out to change your mood!” Rikku showed her where the SD card went, smiling and hopping up onto the counter. “I modified it so it’s solar. Ta-daaaa.”
“Mm. My genius girlfriend.” Kitty gave her a wet, sloppy kiss on the cheek, and then found a place for the frame on the mantle. She hoped next December they’ll have a house again, but she wasn’t in any hurry. Her family wasn’t going to be growing much any time soon. “Gives me performance anxiety when it comes to hardware.” She winked.
That made Rikku laugh. “Don’t be silly, you’re a tech genius too, Kittykitty.” She planted a sloppy raspberry on Kitty’s neck, grinning.
“Yeah but compared to ...ooh..” She tilted her head back and giggled. “I’ll have to pick you if we ever get stuck in a steampunk timeline. That would probably be like some kind of wet dream.”
Rikku’s eyes went wide and she nodded hard. “Yeah! I’d love that. My goggles wouldn’t be weird, ‘cause everyone would have some!”
“Steampunk you would be hot. Some kind of short shorts and a clockwork corset.” Kitty grinned at her girlfriend. “Knew a guy who wrote steampunk stuff. Varric Tethras. Still get his new stuff when it comes out!”
“Huh, I think I’ve heard of that guy. We should do steampunk characters at ComiCon or something.” Rikku wasn’t as big of a video game nerd as Kitty, but she did love her comics.
“That might be kind of fun,” Kitty replied. She bumped her nose against Rikku’s. “I haven’t done anything that fannish in years. I’ll be rusty.”
“I’ve never gone to a con. I’ll probably end up hating people by the end of it.” Rikku loved people, but conventions seemed to have way too many of them, all at once, very loud.
“Probably. Or maybe you’ll love it because of the energy and the excitement!” Kitty tugged on Rikku’s ear. “Lets do it.”
“We should!” Even though Rikku didn’t know if she’d like it or not, she wasn’t about to let that hold her back. Nothing really ever did. “So, want to put this other stuff under the tree?” Rikku, in addition to making the Cleaning Robots, had also gotten the kids some video games. Stuff she knew they wanted.
“I’ll buy the tickets as soon as they’re on sale because they’ll get sold out in like ten minutes.” Kitty nodded her head towards the tree. “Go ahead!” She sat on the counter to watch Rikku bend over, which she thought would be a wonderful thing to behold.
Crouching down, Rikku put the presents where she thought they’d be best - a bit toward the back, since she wasn’t technically family. “I’ll pay you back for my ticket, obviously.”
“Don’t even worry about it. I’ve got more money than I really need.” She walked over to Rikku and knelt next to her, cupping her face and kissing her nose. “Let me spoil the people I love.”
“You sure? I don’t want things to be imbalanced.” Rikku wrinkled her nose like a bunny post kiss, then lost her balance and ended up on her butt. “Owwwieee.”
Kitty pounced, straddling Rikku’s lap and threading her arms around her shoulders. “You’re right. Things shouldn’t be imbalanced, but sometimes if I can treat us to something I feel ...nice.”
“As long as it’s because you want to.” Rikku nuzzled into the warm that was her girlfriend. “How’re you?” She’d felt a little nervous since their weird break, but mostly okay.
“Doing better.” She nuzzled back, her hands moving into Rikku’s hair. “I really do want you here for the holidays, if you want to be.”
“I really do want to be. I don’t have much of a family - Pops and Brother are over in Japan - so it’s you and the twins. And I told you. I love all of you guys.” Rikku’s eyes closed when hands entered her hair.
Kitty scritched around, knowing how much she liked her own hair touched. “Wanna stay the night?” She sounded incredibly self-conscious, asking that question.
“Mmmhmmm,” Rikku purred. She may or may not have heard the question.
Kitty leaned in and nibbled on Rikku’s ear. “And maybe stay tomorrow...for dinner…” She hugged the other girl against her and continued to nom on her ear.
“I could do that. You’re lucky I don’t have any pets,” Rikku murmured, falling into Kitty’s lap. “But I really do. Want to be in this for a long time. You know that, right?”
The older girl nodded her head, falling onto her back and pulling Rikku on top of her. “I’m still scared of fucking up.”
“Yeah, but you can’t let it stop you. Mistakes will happen, you know? That’s life. You just have to try your best!” Rikku giggled as Kitty tugged her, tickling gently.
Kitty squirmed, giggling a little bit. “Yeah but I’m willing to try not fucking up because you’re worth unfucking up with!” She slid her fingers under Rikku’s shirt and tickled at her ribs. The holidays had been making her feel so sad, and she wasn’t looking forward towards the end of January as the Anniversary came closer, but she was determined to enjoy herself. Determined to grab that bit of happy while it was still in front of her. She’d been thinking about that a lot lately. Sure she wasn’t on a space ship hurtling towards near certain death, but after the past two years she’d had, she was beyond certain that her thoughts then were still relevant now.
Because you take what you can get while it’s here. Before it’s gone.
Rikku was about to agree with Kitty, but then she was squawking as she was tickled. But when Kitty let up, her eyes were serious. “It’s like Yunie in my dreams. You have the best life you can, and you fight for good things. Because that’s all we can do.”
“... Yeah. So I’ve been thinking about that a lot, and I’m going to take my own damn advice.” She nuzzled at Rikku. “I love you. Let me show you how much I do…”
That made Rikku smile. “I can already tell, but I’ll take some reminding if you’re offering,” Rikku giggled.
“Oh, I’m so offering.” Kitty (or Kate, though she’d let Rikku get away with Kittykitty), crawled to her feet. “I’m kinda always on, remember?”
“And I’m not?” Rikku grinned, making a playful growl noise before standing up and jumping on Kitty’s shoulders. “Kate, you’re forgetful.” It was what Rikku called Kitty in private, more intimate times, the times she wanted to say she loved her.
Kitty stumbled, laughing, then carried Rikku piggy-back towards the bedroom. “Sometimes I have to pinch myself for my luck.”
“I can do it for you,” Rikku laughed, ducking low so she wouldn’t hit her head on any door frames. They were both lucky that way.
She took a dive into the bed, landing flat on her stomach with an oof and a Rikku still on her back. She wanted to show, rather than tell. Have fun but also let the emotions rule the moment.
Rikku rolled off of Kitty, smiling and sitting with her for a moment, just stroking her hair. “I hope this coming year is better for you, Kate. You deserve a break. Have you taken a vacation with the twins, ever? Maybe Disney or something, but the one in Florida because let’s face it, Irvine doesn’t count.”
“Just the time in the Summer we went to Chicago,” Kitty said, snuggling into Rikku’s arms while she lazily traced patterns under her shirt. “I’m gonna need you, you know. Because some things are going to be hard, especially in February.” She figured she should apologize ahead of time. “I don’t want you to think I love you any less.”
“Of course you don’t. Just because of what happened doesn’t mean you stopped loving her, Kate. You never will. But hearts are big enough for loving people in the past who’ve left and people in the present who haven’t.” Rikku shrugged. That was obvious. Losing her mother had taught her that trick at a young age.
Kate studied Rikku’s face for a moment, her expression impassive. Then she sniffled, and she grinned, and she pushed Rikku down against the pillows. She didn’t trust her words right now so she spoke instead with her actions and with her touches.
“Are you oka - oh, right.” Rikku giggled, closing her eyes, glad that she had someone in her life she loved as much as Kittykitty.
And Kittykitty was determined to prove it to Rikku.
