Nick was running late and foggy-headed that day at school, He’d slept like two hours for whatever reason, and it was the week before Christmas break, which meant midterms but it also meant that holy shit no one cared. It was hard to focus.
He got to class literally fifteen seconds before the bell rang, and sat through history with what he hoped was an interested look and not looking like he was about to barf. Whatever he looked like, he didn’t have a minute to breathe until passing period, when he just stayed by his locker and sighed. Get it together, Nick.
Juliet was loving her new school. She got to be on cheer squad again as one of the co-captains, and her new classes seemed fun! She had a shopping date with a few girls, and she’d find out all the new places to hang out.
Walking down the hall in her new cheer uniform, she spotted the boy from the internet. Dick, Mick - Nick! “Nick! Hey, Nick!” She jumped up and down a little to get his attention before walking over. “It’s me, Juliet!”
Nick heard his name being called, and wondered if he was dreaming things - but then he saw the boobs and knew he wasn’t. Oh, shit. “Oh! Hi. Juliet. Right. Sorry, were we supposed to meet up or something? I’m really sorry.” Normally he wouldn’t have forgotten a girl who looked like this, but today was unusual.
“Oh, it’s fine. Are you okay? You look kinda sick.” Juliet moved to put her hand on the back of Nick’s head, her face immediately concerned.
“I’m okay, really. Just didn’t get any sleep.” Nick blinked at her touching him, but didn’t object. “It’s, uh, nice of you to worry. I got here late and then haven’t had a second to talk til now. How are you doing? You look ... nice.” Right, Nick.
“You should get more sleep, it’s really important.” She pouted her lower lip a little. “But you do feel warm. Want to go to the nurse? Maybe you could get to go home early!” Her eyes were twinkling; Juliet wasn’t just sweet all the time. “I’m really good! I got on cheer squad, and the uniform is so comfy.”
“I usually do get a lot of sleep, it was just one of those weird nights where you lie awake.” Well. He wasn’t sure she’d ever had one of those, she looked too perfect. “Congrats on the cheer squad thing. It’s cool.”
“Oh, I hate those!” Juliet wrinkled her nose. “Come on, let’s get out of here.”
Nick was surprised she’d want to skip on like her first day, but it worked for him. “Okay. Where’d you want to go?” A friend of his came up behind Juliet and waved, but then his eyes got wide, presumably staring at Juliet’s ass. “Quit it. Him, not you.”
Juliet turned around. “Shoo, mouthbreather.” Then she took Nick’s arm. “I don’t know, want to go get lunch?”
“My lunch period isn’t for another hour, but yeah, sure.” Math class or lunch with Juliet? No brainer.
“Well, if you’re home sick, you don’t have to worry about your lunch period, right? C’mon, you probably have a fever.” Juliet grinned, taking Nick’s hand. “I can tell you about this weird vivid dream I had!”
“They didn’t ... ah, never mind.” Fuck it, he was gonna enjoy this. “I hope I don’t have a fever, that would suck.”
“You’re warm, but it’s probably just because you’re a boy. Don’t worry, I’ve got this.” She squeezed his hand and walked with him to the nurse’s office where she promptly told the nurse they were neighbors and she’d seen him vomit, could they go home? She didn’t feel well either. Juliet looked inherently trustworthy and sweet, and her large doe eyes were difficult to deny.
Soon they were outside of campus. “Do you drive? I ride my bike.”
He couldn’t help but find it really funny when she lied through her teeth to the nurse. But he did his best to shut up and look sick, and she sprung them both. Once they were outside, he answered her question. “I’ve got my truck, yeah. We can put your bike in the back, I bet.”
“Oooh, a truck?” Juliet beamed. “Sweet!” She bounced over to her bike, obliviously bending at the waist to unchain it.
Immediately Nick lost all higher brain function for a few seconds. “I ... uh.” After a few deep breaths, he was able to talk again. “It’s my baby, yeah. I saved up for it, and she runs pretty well. And it’s even clean.”
“I’m excited to see her!” Juliet giggled at the notion of calling a car a ‘her’, and soon was on her bike. “Let’s go!”
“Okay.” It kind of bowled him over and amused him at the same time that she was so bouncy. But she still seemed ... not stupid. Nick started walking toward the nearby parking lot where he always found a spot, even though he’d gotten probably the last one today. Eventually they were standing near a deep blue truck, in good shape, with shiny rims. “Here we go.”
“Oh, it’s cute!” She hopped off of her bike and bounced a little, but then lifted up her bike to put it in the truck’s bed. She was far stronger than she looked.
Nick was kind of impressed by that. “Oh, okay, cool. It’s in there good, right?” That’s what she said immediately flashed through his mind, and he smirked for a second before wiping it away. “Where do you want to go? What kind of food do you like?” Hopefully she wouldn’t just say salad or something.
“Oh, it’ll be fine. Want to go get a burger or something?” Juliet knew she’d end up doing an extra hour on the treadmill, but she really wanted one.
“Sounds awesome.” Was she an angel? He was starting to think so. “Hop in.”
Giggling, she hopped up into the truck, swinging her feet a little as she buckled her seatbelt. “So, were you born here? Tell me all about you!”
“Yeah, I was. In Orange, which is like ten minutes from Santa Ana, where I live now.” Nick shrugged; he wasn’t very interesting. “I have two sisters, I’m the middle kid, and they’re annoying. Parents are okay. I have a varsity letter and I’m doing okay, good enough to go to like, UCLA or UC Santa Barbara or something. Nothing too bad.”
“Oh, what did you letter in? I want to go to UC Santa Barbara too!” She turned to face him, knees tucked under her body in a way that was both modest and covertly sexy. She, of course, had no clue.
Nick, however, did. Dammit. “Um. Kind of an unusual sport. Don’t think I’m some weirdo, but ... badminton? It’s totally a varsity sport, though.”
“It is! Have you ever taken a shuttlecock in the throat? That hurts,” Juliet winced. “I bet you’re really good, can I watch sometime?”
He was both pleased she didn’t make fun of him, and a little turned on thinking about cock in the throat. His cock, her throat. Shut up, Nick. “Right in the Adam’s apple,” he said, starting the car, trying to be chill. “But um, yeah. If you really want to watch a badminton match.”
“Aww, poor thing!” She leaned forward to kiss his Adam’s apple, an innocent gesture in her mind. She just wanted to kiss him better!
Nick blushed hard; he felt it. “Oh. Um. It’s okay. Really. It was a while ago. But it’s nice of you to think of it.” He managed a smile, shifting in his seat. “If you don’t mind, I know a great burger place where we can eat in the car? One of those old fashioned car hops.”
“Oh, that sounds awesome!” She bounced in her seat, leaning back. “You smell really good. I ... do you have a girlfriend or anything? She’d probably be upset if she knew you were skipping school with me, I’m sorry.”
“No. No, I don’t have a girlfriend.” He hadn’t for a while; his last had been psycho and he’d just been sick of the bullshit for a while. “Don’t worry, Juliet.”
She couldn’t help but grin. “Good.” Leaning back in her seat, she folded her arms and smiled at him. “Makes no sense, but works out for me. Oooh, I bet they have shakes at this place, huh?”
“They totally do. Shakes and smoothies.” In case she wanted a healthier thing. He did know that cheerleaders were actually pretty buff. He didn’t go into the girlfriend thing; that was a textbook way to fuck it all up.
Leaning back, Juliet crossed her legs and grinned as they pulled into the drive-in. “Oh my gosh, this is totally adorable retroness! I hope they have a bacon cheeseburger. If you’re going to eat a burger, you have to go all out.”
Nick grinned a little. “Makes sense to me. Burgers are awesome.” He parked the car and turned it off, turning back to her. “I’m just ... glad you seem to like it up here. It’s a cool place to live.”
“Oh, anywhere’s home as long as I have my family and some friends.” Juliet blushed a little and looked down at her lap. “You’re nice, I’m glad I met you. Not every hot guy is a sweetheart.”
Nick blushed right back. “Uh. Thanks! Thanks, Juliet. You’re ... really cool.” So far, at least.
“Thanks. I’m glad you think so. So, what classes do you have this year? I’m in one advanced class to help pad my GPA.” She wrinkled her nose. “But it’s advanced Japanese, so whatevs, easy peasy!”
“Advanced Japanese is easy? Wow.” Damn. Nick raised an eyebrow. He broke off as the cute carhop came over to take their orders, asking for a double burger and fries and waiting for Juliet to give her order.
“Oh, I’ve been taking it for years,” she started. But the carhop took their orders and Juliet ordered a bacon cheeseburger with fries and a vanilla milkshake. Two extra hours on the treadmill. Whoops.
“That’s awesome. I barely speak any Spanish, and you almost have to around here. At least a little.” Nick shrugged. “Might be too late for me to start; they say it’s harder to learn once you’re not a kid.”
“That’s what they say,” Juliet nodded agreeably. “I started Japanese in junior high, and it was hard at first, but I really like it. It’s my favorite class after cheer practice, which probably doesn’t count.”
“I don’t think that’s a class, but whatever.” Nick shrugged. “And I mean, I don’t really have a favorite class, but I do okay. I think I have like a 2.7?”
“I have a 3.9. You could get a tutor, they totally help! Mine back home is my ex.” Juliet sighed, shaking her head. “He was kind of a jerk, but he really did help with math.”
“A tutor?” Nick echoed. “Maybe for English. Math’s actually my best grade; I have an A-.” English made no sense to him. Who knew what some author was thinking and why? And who cared?
“I’m good in science and languages,” Juliet shrugged. But then her milkshake got there and she giggled, clapping her hands excitedly. “Want to share?”
“Um. Yeah, okay.” Sure, what the hell. It was almost cute, the way she said it. “Is there only one straw?”
“Nope, I asked for two.” She held them aloft, beaming like she’d just won a prize for her genius. “So you won’t get your cold germs all over me.”
Nick laughed. “Okay, cool. If I am actually sick, I’d feel shitty if I got you sick too.” Don’t give the hot girl a cold, Nick. That was just stupid.
“You’re not really sick, I don’t think. If you are, just barely.” Juliet plunked both straws into the shake, claimed one as her own, and sighed happily as she sipped the shake. She loved ice cream.
“Well, still glad for the extra straw.” He’d never done this with a girl, and it really was kind of weirdly cute. Their heads were close together, and Nick made sure to sort of duck in so as not to smack her on the side of the brainpan.
Juliet giggled, looking up from time to time to meet his eyes. “You’re pretty.”
Nick blushed hard, which he’d thought was impossible with all the blood rushing around. “Uh. Thanks?”
“Are you going to try to kiss me? You totally should. Germs be damned!” Juliet pulled away, sitting up and leaning forward. “Here. Eyes closed, go for it.”
Wow, he hadn’t seen that one coming. But it worked for him. Nick laughed shakily, hoping this wasn’t some kind of joke. He did kiss her, hoping he hadn’t suddenly forgotten how to do it in the months since his last girlfriend.
He hadn’t. Juliet sighed happily, leaning forward and squeezing his hand. “Thank you, that was nice,” she murmured when their lips parted. His mouth had been cold and tasted like vanilla; she wouldn’t forget it.
“ ... Yeah. It was.” It really had been. She kissed nice. And now was totally the time. “Um. I was wondering. Would you maybe want to ...”
“Go out sometime?” Juliet finished his sentence, a hopeful lilt to her voice. “Yeah, absolutely.” She leaned forward to kiss him again, giggling when the carhop knocked on the window with their food.
“Really?” Nick blushed, grinning a little stupidly at the carhop. “Thanks. And um, thanks.” He said to Juliet, handing her her stuff.
“Of course! You’re fun, and you don’t treat me like an idiot.” Juliet laid out napkins so she could neatly tear into her burger. She ate with manners, but she still ate hungrily. Try-outs had worked up an appetite.
“Well, you’re not an idiot.” It seemed obvious to him. Nick tore into his burger, making a happy noise.
Juliet would’ve replied but she was too busy eating her burger as well, her own happy noises audible. “Unng, is there anything better than bacon?”
“Not much.” He could think of a few things, but he figured he better not be too obviously crude. At least not right now.
“Well, yeah, the other things kind of go without saying, but I shouldn’t say them on a first date,” Juliet giggled.
Was this a date? Nick was so confused. He just figured they were hanging out. But at least he knew that much about girls - just go along with it. A brainwave struck him. “So, um. For our date. What kind of movies do you like?”
“Oh! Anything with zombies, kung fu, or slasher movies. I wish it weren’t near Christmas, all the good horror flicks come out around Halloween.” She sighed, then looked at him. “Want to watch movies at your place? We can have a Romero binge!”
Nick stared. “There’s a theater nearby that’s doing a Romero triple feature on Saturday night.” A girl who looked like this and was into zombie movies? He might be in love.
“Can we go?” Juliet bounced a little in her seat, unaware that her cheer outfit made jiggle more noticeable.
Nick was very aware. “Yes! That’d be fuckin’ awesome.” Don’t look down, stupid.
Instead of noticing him noticing, Juliet leaned forward and snogged him again. “You’re so amazeballs, Nick!”
“I just saw it - mmph - ” In the paper. Who cared.
She didn’t give him a peck either; it was a proper kiss with tongue and everything. “Well, you’re a genius. I like you.”
“I ... I like you too, Juliet.” He did. A lot.
“Good.” She kissed him once more before returning to her burger. “Mmm, I wonder if they have dessert. I could murder some pie or something.”
“They totally do. Two pies and two cakes, and it changes every day.” Nick liked the burger kisses. He could go for more of those.
“Okay, we totally are getting dessert. I’ll pay for that,” she beamed. She loved dessert. Crap. No amount of treadmill time would help with this.
“No way, I got it.” If this was a date, especially. It wasn’t cool to make the girl pay on the first date.
“You sure? I’ll get the movies then.” Juliet kissed his cheek before squinting to see if she could make out what the desserts of the day were.
“Okay, that’s fair.” Nick sat back, smiling. This day had started shitty and was going to end epically awesomely.
