Who: Alice and Esme Cullen
When: Mid November
Where: Cullen Household
What: Long-Overdue Talk
Rating/Warning: Low
Status: Complete
Alice was sitting in the kitchen. She’d texted her mother that they should talk, and was waiting with a cup of tea. She was nervous about this talk, not only because she was worried that her mother wouldn’t approve, but also because she might be about to break Esme’s heart. It wasn’t every day that the youngest child moved out of the house.
Esme thought her daughter might possibly want to talk about the dreams. She had been slower in getting them but she now knew that they were vampires in them and she and Carlisle had adopted them all - kind of how they had here although there were obvious differences. The relationships the children had for one. But Esme had a sinking feeling she knew what Alice really wanted to talk about and was prepared to hide her sadness over it. Entering the kitchen she smiled as she saw Alice, “Is everything okay sweetheart?”
“Yeah, everything’s okay, Mom.” Alice said, trying to force a smile for her mother’s benefit. She motioned toward the cup of tea she’d poured for her mother, and pushed the chair out opposite herself at the table so Esme could sit down. “Pretty good, considering.”
Esme took the seat and the tea with a smile of thanks, she placed her hand over her daughter's gently, "All of you children have always been able to tell me anything. You know that"
“I know.” Alice said, lifting her hand to rest over her mother’s. “I just… I’m nervous that you’re going to freak out,” she said, her heart was thumping in her throat. “It’s about me. And Jasper.”
“Are things closer to the relationship you two have in the dreams now?” Esme asked gently, there was something in the way Alice now said her bro...Jasper’s name that made her ask, combined with a mother’s intuition which she’d always had to a certain extent.
Alice nodded. “...closer to our dream relationship.” She agreed. She was so nervous, even though it seemed like her mother knew what was going on already. “...Quite a bit closer, actually. He’s asked me to move into his apartment with him. And I told him I would.”
“Oh” now that surprised Esme, “well, goodness. I have to admit I wasn’t expecting that” she said softly.
Double whammy. Not just that Alice was moving out, but that she was moving in with her adopted brother turned boyfriend. Not only because of the dreams, but because of their waking lives, too. Because they were destined to be together. Alice sat for a moment and let that sink in. “I’m sorry.”
Esme shook her head, covering her daughters hand with hers and squeezing, “Never apologise darling, not if you’re doing what makes you happy. You know that’s all I want for you, for all of you”
“I know. But I hate to leave you.” Especially since it was coming so soon after Rosalie, Emmett, Jasper and Edward all moved out. Alice felt like she was leaving her mother in a vulnerable time. “I just… it’s time. It’s time for me and Jazz.”
Truth was Esme hated it too. But she would never let her children chose to do something just to keep her happy. "Of course" she nodded, "I'm so proud of you Alice, you know that don't you?"
Alice blushed. “I know.” At least, she thought she knew. Maybe someday if she had children of her own, she’d truly understand. But for the time being she didn’t really know. No child really understood. Especially not a teenager. “I love you, Mom.”
“I love you too darling” Esme replied standing to pull Alice into a hug, “And I still expect to see you for dinner on a regular basis. No disappearing on us”
“Of course. I wouldn’t dream of it.” Alice said, wrapping her arms around her mother. She gave a little sigh as she melted into that embrace. “Thanks, Mom. Hey, maybe we can do like, one night a week. A real, home-cooked dinner. I have no idea how I’m going to survive on my own without your cooking.”
Esme chuckled softly, “Once a week sounds good to me, and you make sure you bring Jasper with you. I miss him too” she pulled back to smile at Alice, “I can always teach you to cook sweetheart”
Alice blushed a little at the mention of Jasper. It was strange. This felt so much like the dreams, but it was so real. She wasn’t a vampire--even though her skin was so pale and she was nearly sparkling in the sunlight now--and her mother wasn’t, either. Nor was Jasper. The idea that in this world he was her adopted brother and not her soul mate…
She nodded. “I’ll bring him along whenever I can.”
It was strange. Sometimes even Esme forgot, the dreams she had feeling much more like memories than anything else. But she was glad too, she didn’t particularly want to be a vampire. Fighting against the urge to hurt people she cared about would be terrible.
“Good” she smiled, “Now do you want to help me make dinner?”
“Yeah, Mom.” Alice said, climbing up out of her chair. “Let’s make dinner.”
