Martha still couldn’t believe that she’d gotten suspended for what she’d said to that patient. Okay, so maybe she could, but it hadn’t been her fault. The man had asked her what had caused his heart attack and being compelled to tell the truth, Martha had told him that perhaps if he hadn’t weighed over two hundred pounds, he might not have had one. While it was the truth, normally she wouldn’t have put it quite like that. So now Martha was suspended from the hospital and had to attend a sensitivity training class over the weekend. The only upside to being suspended was that Martha had, had time to plan something nice for Mickey’s birthday.
His birthday had been on Wednesday, so Martha had spent the first day of her suspension deciding what she was going to make him for dinner and had decided on her mother’s baked macaroni and cheese and hoped that Mickey would like it. His birthday present was a scrapbook of pictures that had been taken during their visit to see his grandmother, which she also hoped he liked. Now here they were, halfway through dinner, “So, been a good birthday so far?” She asked, taking a sip of wine.
“Yes, I didn’t realize you were such a great cook. Your grandmother was pretty awesome as well since that recipe is delicious. Is it terrible that I’m quite happy that you’re suspended so we can actually spend time together? You seriously work too hard Martha and while you didn’t say it correctly what you told that man was true. It might be good for you to have a few days off,” he commented with a smile. He was worried that she would work herself into an accident. He also wanted to spend a lot more time with his girlfriend even though they had just taken a trip together recently.
Martha smiled at the compliment to her cooking, “I can make a few other things too. I’ll have to make you dinner again soon.” Martha had mostly learned to cook when she was at Harvard, living on her own for the first time. She couldn’t help but laugh at his comment and nodded, “I don’t know who was more shocked, me or him.” She wasn’t quite so mortified any longer, her boss had understood, but under hospital policy, she had to go to the sensitivity training as well as be suspended for a few days. “If we weren’t short staffed I wouldn’t have to work so hard. As it is, a lot of doctors are doing double duty between St. Josephs and Irvine.” She wasn’t one of them, but Nina was.
“I would love to have lots of dinner with you if you could just cut back on working so much. I can’t believe you guys are that short staffed that people are working between two hospitals. Doctors shouldn’t be in short supply since there’s so many people going into school for it. And besides, what did that man expect you to say? I mean, it’s pretty obvious when you look at him. But whatever, I’ll toast in his honor because I got to spend my birthday with my girlfriend,” he commented cheekily with a bit of a laugh. He didn’t make light of her situation, but he couldn’t hide that he was happy she was here tonight.
"As soon as he get some more help I promise I'll cut back." It was absurd that they were so short staffed at the moment, but Martha was hopeful that they'd get some new medical students in soon who could pick up some of the slack, "I'll toast to that." She said, picking up her glass, smiling. She was also happy she was able to spend Mickey's actual birthday with him instead of having to wait until the weekend, "By the way, when you're finished eating you get a prize." She took a sip of her wine, smirking around the rim of the glass.
“I get a prize?” his eyebrows raised in question before taking a sip of his wine. That was certainly an interesting thing to be told. He was more than tempted to just shovel all his food into his mouth just to be done quickly and see what his prize was. But, that seemed rude because it tasted amazing, “Do I get a hint about this prize?”
"Well it is your birthday, isn't it?" Martha smirked as she set her glass down, "Of course you get a prize." She made a 'hmmm' sound as she pretended to think about a clue for a moment, "It's has something to do with a recent event." She really hoped he liked the scrapbook/photo album from their trip to visit his grandmother.
“Hmmm….is it sex? Because we just had sex recently,” Mickey couldn’t help but tease her before leaning over to give her a kiss. Even if she was intending to mean sex he couldn’t help but hope that would happen at some point in the evening. Once he pulled away from her he quickly finished up the last few bites of his food, “Mmmm, that was so good. Now what is my prize, most wonderful girlfriend?”
Martha laughed until Mickey kissed her and she had no choice but to kiss him back. Okay, so she could have pushed him away, but she had no intention of ever doing that. She’d have to be crazy to push Mickey away after all. As he pulled away, Martha smirked at him, “Well, that is a definite possibility for an after dinner activity, but that isn’t your prize.” Getting up, Martha went to retrieve Mickey’s present from where she’d put it on the coffee table then came back to the kitchen and sat down on his lap as she held out the present, which was obviously some sort of wrapped book. “Happy Birthday.”
“I quite enjoy after dinner activities,” he quirked his eyebrow and smirked as he waited for her to bring back the present. He took that opportunity to finish up his glass of wine and then watched as she placed the present in his lap. It was book-ish in shape and he was curious to see what was in there. So, he took his time to unwrap it and then his eyes got wide as he noticed it was a scrapbook. Once he opened it he realized it was of their trip and his smile grew large, “Oh wow, Martha. This is fantastic! This is really special and thank you so so much for making it.”
Martha watched as Mickey unwrapped his gift, watching his expression as he did so and a smile spread across her lips as he smiled, “I had all these pictures and figured I’d put them to good use.” There were pictures of Mickey and his grandmother, just his grandmother, Martha with Mickey and or his grandmother as well as various pictures of things and places they’d seen during the trip, “And so I figured that since you can’t see your grandmother as often now, this way you can see her whenever you want.” She was sure that Mickey had other pictures of his grandmother, but she thought this would be a nice reminder of their trip. “So, you like it?”
“This is one of the sweetest presents I have ever received. I really truly appreciate the effort and the thought that went into this. You are absolutely perfect right now,” he answered her truthfully. It was so thoughtful of her and he was completely blown by it. He was willing himself to not cry about it so instead he set it down and went over to her to give her a proper kiss of thanks.
Martha smiled as Mickey kissed her and wrapped her arms around his neck as she returned the kiss, “I’m glad you like it. I wanted to get you something that was one of a kind.” Sure, she could have gone to the store and bought something, but this had been something that no one else would have and something he could look back on whenever he wanted and would remind him of a good time they’d had, “I mean, it was either this or a bunch of Red Sox stuff.” She gave him a cheeky grin.
“I would never be able to wear Red Sox around here. I basically have to choose Angels or Dodgers,” he pointed out with a laugh before picking her up in his arms, “But you are the best. Now, let’s move onto the second part of my gift.” He kissed her again as he started to walk them towards the bedroom with a laugh. It was so much fun to carry her around places in the first place and now he was going to prove how thankful he was to have her in his life now.
