There were only a few more days until Thanksgiving, and Dani was kind of nervous about the idea of her and Shepard both in the kitchen together. She decided the best way to get over that was to call her girlfriend over and get her used to the kitchen.
They were going to make pies. It couldn’t end up that disastrous right?
She pointed to the couple of bags of apples she’d had Sam pick up for her, “So the first step is we have to peel those. I use a knife, other people use peelers. I don’t think you can shoot the peels off but maybe the melee option on your omni-tool could work.”
Shepard liked to cook the same way she liked to drive - straight from point A to point B. What was the point of working around in circles when you could just cut your way to your destination, right?
She looked at her tool, then popped the melee blade. “Hang on, I bet I can tune this thing to do a fine shave…”
"Which is about as fine as it'll need to be to peel an apple," Dani added, while pulling out a paring knife. She took a seat at the kitchen table, and pulled over an apple. Doing something as domestic as pie making with Tyra was a nice break from everything else.
"Just don't ruin my toaster again, okay?"
“I bought you a new one,” Shepard countered, though she shivered at the thought of that day. And just as she’d thought, she was able to skin the apples pretty easily with an Omni-tool.
Dani watched her for a bit, not really paying as much attention to peeling her own apple as she was to her girlfriend. That day had actually been pretty traumatic for everyone involved. It was the chief reason she'd been so scared to ever take her bracelet off.
That was something she was dealing with in therapy, and she wasn't really ready to bring it up. It'd ruin the mood and make things awkward. So instead, she smirked a bit, "I really should show you those little blue babies sometime."
“No.” Tyra looked up sharply. “No. I don’t want to see that anymore.” She was worried it would hurt Dani more than anything else. While she did remember her’s and Liara’s children, that was another life. “I want to see ours.”
"It shows you whatever you most want to see, really. If that's what you want to see, then that's what you'll see." Dani eyed Tyra, worried that she'd offended her somehow. Or was the subject just that sensitive?
She wrinkled her brow a bit, "You know that doesn't bother me, right? I don't feel threatened by it at all."
“I ...don’t always know. I don’t want to hurt you with old wants. Even if she...showed up one day. Things would be different now.” Shepard smiled, though there was pain there. Liara hurt, if only because most of her memories of her were the times when she’d withdrawn from the Commander.
"And if Rahne showed up again, things wouldn't be quite the same, either. We never really got to the point where we could admit we wanted to be together anyway, even if we were soul mates."
She pointed at Tyra with her paring knife, "You're pretty much the most important thing in my life. I trust you. We've had each other's backs for a while, even when we weren't a thing. If Liara showed up we'd handle it just fine. Any little babies are mine, and I know that."
“I do kind of wish I could just put one in you.” It was about the only thing that Shepard regretted about. With Liara she could have a child that was ‘hers’. She wanted one that was Dani’s.
"Well we kind of can. It'll be our DNA anyway." Dani offered, returning her attention back to the apples she was peeling.
The conversation was turning towards something pretty serious, and she was a little worried she was going to end up cutting herself, "I told you before, we froze some of my eggs before I started everything. Infertility is really only an issue for people who don't have some saved away. We should be okay."
“Good.” She brought over the now peeled apples and kissed the top of Dani’s head. Then she murmured in her ear.
Words that they hardly ever said to each other. Dani thought that was because they both wanted the words to really mean something when they were said.
It put some color in her cheeks, and she leaned back against Tyra a bit, "That omni-tool really does good work on apples. I think I should leave the rest of these to you. You can't really brute force a pie crust."
“But I can try,” Shepard said, her finger tracing over Dani’s scalp. She was never bothered by baldness, and could find beauty in just about any woman. Right now, it was the way Dani’s eyes were so dark and so deep that she could be lost in them.
Sometimes she let the kids at the ranch write on her head with sharpie, kind of like they tended to decorate casts on various broken limbs. There were still some fading marks of some kind of graffiti-style dragon on there.
"You can try, but you'll fail. It requires finesse, you know. The only finesse you have is in the bedroom."
Dani smirked at Tyra, then got up from her chair and walked to the fridge. Sure, they could have spent forever rolling out pie crusts, and at another time she would have done that. But there were a lot of pies to make, and she was conserving her energy.
So she pulled out boxes of chilled pillsbury pie crusts that had already been rolled out and cut in circles, "Or we could cheat, because I don't have finesse right now either, and I'd rather save it for the bedroom, too."
“Excuse me, I have plenty of finesse outside the bedroom. I was a sort of front-line sniper, if you recall. Like a ninja. I was a space ninja.” Space ninja Shepard. that should be an action figure.
She followed Dani and hugged her from behind, nuzzling her nose into the back of the woman’s neck. Holidays always made her feel extra snuggly and no one was going to walk in right now. Probably.
"Fine, you were a space ninja. I still don't trust you with pie crust," Dani murmured, her tone affectionate.
Hopefully no one walked in. Moments like these were just for Tyra.
