What: Meeting
When: Tuesday, November 26th. Afternoon.
Where: Granny's Diner
Rating: Family Friendly
Status: Complete
When Ruby had called her after another waitress had called out, Aurora told her she’d be there right away. She didn’t have any plans or another job that afternoon anyway, so she didn’t mind coming in to help Ruby out. After all, that was why she still worked part time at the diner as it was. Not only that, but she got to spend time with her best friend when she wasn’t swamped with other diner-centric things like being the boss. She was just wiping down a table after her most recent party had left when she heard the bell over the door ring.
Mulan was still getting used to the area, and had started checking out what the local flavor had to offer. Part of her would never leave the military mindset and she had to learn every alleyway of any area she visited. Just in case.
But now she was hungry, and she stepped into the cafe to look around. Food smelled really, really good, so she took off her sunglasses and stuck them into her shirt pocket. She had on a beat up old leather jacket, weathered blue jeans, and a button up flannel shirt.
Aurora finished wiping down the table then approached the woman who had just come in, “Hi, how’re you today? Are you waiting for anyone else in your party?” She asked, giving the other woman a friendly smile. Unlike some waitresses or people in general, Aurora always tried to be friendly to people who came into the diner, even if she was having a bad day.
Mulan looked at the other woman and felt her insides drop out. She was beautiful, but she had this terrible feeling. Like that beauty was meant for someone else and she didn't even know where the hurt came from. But the feelings didn't reach her face and she smiled neutrally. "It's just me, thanks. I'm new to the county and trying to get my feel of the place. I've heard the food here is really good."
Still smiling, Aurora grabbed a menu and gestured for the other woman to follow her, “How long have you been here?” She asked, glancing over her shoulder at her as she led her to a booth. There wasn’t an overabundance of people in the diner at this hour and she doubted she would suddenly get a rush and need the booth. “And you heard right. And I’m not just saying that because my best friend owns the place.” As far as Aurora was concerned the food at Granny’s really was really good.
“A few weeks. Still settling in a little bit.” Mulan had clearly grown up in the UK, though her accent was slight. She gave Aurora another polite smile. “That’s good to hear. I’m Mulan.”
“I’m Aurora.” She handed Mulan the menu once she was seated and it was then that she realized that the other woman seemed familiar, “You wouldn’t happen to be on a site called Valarnet, would you?” Sure, the avatars used on the site were pretty small, but she couldn’t think of anywhere else that she might have seen Mulan.
Well she certainly seemed like the dawn, which Mulan just knew would bring trouble. Her type always ended up being straight and/or taken. Best keep things light and professional … and such. Friendly. Still, her smile started to warm by sheer proximity. “Yes. I just signed up there.”
“You replied to my post, didn’t you?” Aurora had also just joined Valarnet, when Ruby had and so far she’d only made one post, but only three people had replied so it wasn’t hard to recall who those people had been, “I just joined there too. That was my first post.”
She nodded her head, and opted to not mention how much she’d felt drawn to reply. It was like she knew Aurora some how. She couldn’t explain it. “I’ve only posted a few times. Mostly I read what other people say. It’s harder to find something to add. I don’t talk much in person, either.”
“I know what you mean,” Aurora said, nodding as well, “I joined to see if maybe I could make some contacts or something. Maybe make some friends. Who knows.” She glanced over at another table then turned back to Mulan, “I’ll be right back.” She’d given Mulan her menu already so she’d give her a minute to look it over while she checked on her other table.
“Who knows,” Mulan repeated quietly. She didn’t start breathing again until Aurora had left, and forced her eyes to stare at the menu in front of her instead of at the waitress. She wasn’t really seeing it until she blinked her eyes and settled on a cheeseburger. You can’t go wrong with a cheeseburger. She hadn’t had a proper one in a long time.
While Mulan looked over the menu, Aurora checked on her other table and got them their check then ventured back over to Mulan’s table, “Are you ready to order or do you still need a few minutes?”
“I’ll take the cheeseburger, with bacon.” Because bacon made everything better. She didn’t want Aurora to leave just yet. She just had this feeling like the woman needed protecting. She shook it off. “You’re pretty busy. Is it just you today?”
“Good choice. Our burgers are really good.” Aurora smiled as she jotted it down on her notepad, “How did you want that?” She asked at the same time that Mulan spoke again and she nodded, “Yes and no.” While Ruby waited tables, she was taking care of a few other things at that moment, “Another waitress comes in soon and it’s been a lot busier than this before.” She smirked again as she glanced around at the handful of full tables and booths.
“Medium.” Mulan looked around and then nodded at Aurora. “That’s good. This would be lonely without someone to talk to, but I wouldn’t want to distract you too much from your job.”
“It’s my best friend’s grandmother’s place, but Ruby takes care of the place mostly now.” Aurora said as she added the note to Mulan’s order, “She’s here most of the time, so it’s usually not too boring when it’s slow.” She gave the other woman another smile then gestured towards the kitchen, “I’m gonna go put your order in now.”
“Thank you.” Mulan nodded her head, and couldn’t stop herself from watching Aurora walk towards the kitchen. She wanted to get to know her as friends. Always as friends. She wasn’t about to go chasing after girls. It wasn’t like she was the dating type. But it was nice to want. Sometimes.
