It was always hard for Anakin to be a passenger whenever he happened to fly. The last weekend hadn’t helped either, not when Obi-wan had allowed him to pilot his starfighter, now the urge to fly had invaded and a great deal of his thoughts since then had revolved around getting back into the cockpit. His master had offered him the chance to do a few more modifications on the ship which he would have happily spend his week on, but it would have to wait. He was going to meet Padme’s family now, a family that lived far enough away for them to need to fly commercially, so now Anakin had to behave himself and play passenger.
He was fairly relaxed about it though, sliding a little lower in his seat as his left hand slipped over to take Padme’s. She was sitting there, flicking through SkyMall as the sunlight streamed through the window catching her hair and framing her face, making her look every inch the angel he thought she was. After a gentle squeeze to her delicate hand that looked absolutely tiny compared to his he gave her an amused smile and nodded to the magazine. “Looking for Christmas gifts?”
“Oh yes, these high waist control boxer briefs would look fantastic on you,” she commented as the corner of her mouth quirked upwards and she turned her head to look at him. It was a pre-flight ritual that she flipped through the magazines in the seat pocket before the safety speech began. She was giggling to herself about some of the things she had seen in the magazine and was debating if she wanted to take the magazine with her to show her family and laugh about it later. It was thankfully a short flight, only two hours, and she was excited to spend time with Anakin. The squeeze to her hand brought a blush on her cheeks and she leaned over to kiss his cheek.
Everything had been planned and she was excited to spend a long amount of time with Anakin. It was a big step in their relationship for him to meet her family and for them to travel together. Hopefully everything would go well and she would possibly let down her last wall because she could tell that his feelings were growing stronger for her. It didn’t hurt that she occasionally caught him looking at her with a sort of reverence, which always made her blush.
“Are you saying I need to start doing crunches? That my amazing abs aren’t what they should be?” he chuckled lightly. He did love the funny little catalogue but he had never actually compelled to buy anything, he might have to check their website later for gag gifts for her. Perhaps soon to throw her off the scent of what he was getting her for Christmas. He was sure the puppy would more than make up for how she would take any horrible gift from the magazine.
“You know, when I said I wanted to take you flying this wasn’t exactly what I had in mind.” Their argument over the zillo beast and Anakin’s own intense desire to protect her was thankfully all over and forgiven now. Though she still seemed a little unsure to go up with him, she knew he was a good pilot but maybe a little reckless by some standards and he was sure his piloting had seemed almost suicidal on Sunday while they were taking down the monster. Eventually though, he promised her and himself, he would find an excuse to take her flying.
She wasn’t completely against the idea of going up flying with him. She had been taking lessons from Carol, so she wasn’t uncomfortable with the idea of being in a tiny two seater plane with him. But she had watched him fly in her dreams and he seemed more reckless than Carol was. But she would never voice those opinions out loud and compare the two people, “I’m technically taking you flying since I bought your ticket. And maybe some day I’ll let you take me up.” She was just happy that the whole zillo beast incident was over and she didn’t have anything to fight with him about.
After she spoke she closed the magazine and tucked it back into the seat back before curling up on her seat as best as she could and leaned happily against him. Her fingers were crossed that Anakin would do well with her family because she was starting to care for him more than she liked to admit. It didn’t help that the dreams were starting to influence her feelings and make them stronger. Her hands slipped into his as her head rested on his shoulder, “But for now we will enjoy this plane ride. And just be thankful that there’s no crazy monsters to attack us.”
“I admire your self control at not making a joke about your family being some sort of giant crazy monster.” Anakin teased. It had dawned on him more than once that he should have been nervous about meeting her family but he really wasn’t. The more of his other self that seeped in the less anxious he tended to be in general, even if most tended to think this was a bad thing as he really did need what restraint he had. Aside from that those friends of her parents he had met at that gala seemed to genuinely like him which led him to believe that her parents would be just as easy. Seeing them in the dream world did sort of make things easier for him as well, even if he knew he didn’t have the clout that being a Jedi in that world usually brought.
Sitting as they were it was easy to lean over and press a kiss to her temple with a gentle smile. “I promise, the next time we’re attacked by some monster of any sort, I will take you flying somewhere nice. Like a real vacation. Maybe some tropical island or something, where we can get drinks with fruit and umbrellas, and lay around all day if we wanted.”
