Lexi was glad that they’d found a doctor who, not only knew how to do the procedure they’d been talking about, but was also a dreamer. Telling a regular doctor that she wanted to extract some of her eggs because there was a chance she could become a vampire would have gotten her a one way trip to the looney bin. And she really didn’t think she’d look all that hot in a straight jacket.
After talking to Dr. Magius, Lexi had filled Huck in, found out when would be a good time for him to take a trip to the doctor’s office then made an appointment with Dr. Magius. With her schedule about to get fuller with longer hours at Disneyland cause of the holidays and Huck finishing up his novel plus starting on the screenplay for the movie, she was glad that Dr. Magius could see them so soon. “I can honestly say, this is something I never thought I’d be doing.” She said as they entered the waiting area of the clinic.
“Me neither,” Huck agreed, glancing around. “But then, I never thought I was the reincarnation of the real Huckleberry Finn, or even that I would really be turning my novel into a feature film. Imagined it. But that’s another story.”
Lexi couldn’t help but smile as Huck mentioned his novel being turned into a movie. She was incredibly happy for him, that this thing that he’d dreamt of was actually coming true. “I’m so excited about the movie. I’m excited for you.” She knew it was going to be a lot of work and he’d be busier than usual, but now that they were living together they’d still see each other more often than before they’d moved in together and he was busy writing. Still smiling, she leaned in, pressing a kiss to his lips, “And I know I’ve said it before, but I love you and I’m glad you’re so understanding of this whole possible vampire thing.” Really, what other guys would be so awesome about crazy stuff like this?
“Mm.” He nodded, enjoying the closeness that he felt in being at her side for this moment. “I am just hoping that I don’t, you know, regress to a wild teenager and get stuck that way. Thank goodness I’m Huck Finn, and not Peter Pan. That would be a little too weird, even if he would be forever young.” Pan was just a bit too young to be traipsing about the centuries with a vampire mistress. Huck would rather wind up looking like a dirty old man.
Doctor Magius smiled as he came out from the back, eyes warm as he spotted the two. “MIster Finn! Miss Branson! Welcome.” He smiled as he moved to greet them and shake their hands. “If you are ready, we can go back to my office to talk.” He nodded to them, and then led them back toward his office. It was a small but warm room, with several comfy chairs, and a door leading into an exam room as well as several large bookshelves crammed with books and papers. It was a well lived in and used room, not just for show.
“Please, come in and sit.”
“So far I don’t think anyone has deaged. So, I think you’re alright there. And if you were Peter Pan then at least you’d be able to fly. So that could be a plus, but I like you the way you are.” She smiled again and was about to give him another kiss when Dr. Magius came out to greet them, “Hi, Dr. Magius.” She greeted, turning towards him. She’d chosen a more conservative outfit today, a knee length dress with a shrug over it and flats, so that she wouldn’t be taller than Huck. She was still fairly young and at times wasn’t taken seriously and if there was ever a time to be taken seriously, it was now. Lacing her fingers with Huck’s, they followed Dr. Magius.
Huck smiled, and headed into the office with Lexi and the doctor. He was glad it was Magius they would be working with, since they’d already established a rapport during the power-swapping incident. It made things a lot more comfortable overall.
“It’s good to see you again, doc.”
“And you, Mister Finn.” Magius nodded to them both, grinning, and he sat himself once they were both in, the door closing by itself. His staff leaned against the desk he sat next to, for all the world like a person leaning there. It was tall, and darkest wood, with a claw at the top clutching a solid crystal ball that sometimes was clear and sometimes swirled with colors. And he smiled to them. “How are you both feeling today?” He glanced across them, and nodded.
Lexi had almost forgotten about who Huck had swapped with when she’d first talked to Magius on Valarnet, but when she’d mentioned it to him, he’d reminded her and she couldn’t help but think it was a bit of fate that he’d responded to her post. “I’m pretty good.” She responded, glancing at the staff for a moment then at the older man behind the desk. He had mentioned magic when they spoke, but seeing the staff made it all the more real. “Thank you again for fitting us in so soon.”
“Same here,” Huck replied, settling down. “I think we’re both pretty hopeful, all things considered.” He knew they were about to embark on a lifetime journey, and who better to see them on their way?
“You sounded like this was important to you. And I do not believe in waiting when others are afraid, or in need.” He smiled and gestured, lightly. “Could I get you some water?” If they said yes, then bottles of water would float to their hands. Then he nodded to them. “Lexi, you told me on the net what you want, what you are here for. What made you decide, both of you, to take this step?”
“Water would be nice, thank you.” Somehow she wasn’t exactly surprised when the bottle floated over to her and she couldn’t help the grin that spread across her lips. She just kept meeting so many interesting people from Valarnet. When he asked the question, Lexi glanced over at Huck for a moment before speaking, “We want to be able to start a family someday, but not now. I’m not ready right now. We’re not ready right now, but if there’s a possibility that I could turn into a vampire in the near future, I don’t want to lose the option to be able to have biological children.” They had talked about alternatives before thinking of this option and while Lexi would have been happy to adopt later on down the road, if there was an option to have a baby that was part of both of them then she was going to look into it.
"I think that's the long and short of it," Huck affirmed. "We are both committed to this relationship, looking toward the long term, and while we don't have a surrogate picked out yet or anything like that, I just felt that the sooner we could begin making preparation, the better."
Magius nodded. “Very well. Then we can do this. Extraction is a simple procedure, and done quickly, and can even be done as an outpatient option, as some fertility clinics do it. I would extract the material, and split it into two samples, storing one here, and one at another location of your choosing. That way, even if one place faces a power loss that overcomes backup generators, you still do not lose your options.” He sat back, sipping some water, then continued.
“We can run the tests to make sure all is well, then set up to perform it within the week, and make it so that you can be back to normal duty within a day of the procedure. As well, I wanted to ask how comfortable you are with me using magic during the procedure. It would change little, but make it slightly safer for you, as well as more comfortable.” He used magic mostly for such things.
His voice was gentle, and warm, and he spoke to both of them, meeting their eyes as he did so.
Lexi nodded in response to what Huck added, “I didn’t want to wait a few months then just wake up one morning to find myself with fangs and a lost opportunity.” She glanced at Huck then back at Magius as he began explaining what would happen now. When he got to the part about using magic, she glanced at Huck to see what he thought. A few months ago if someone had asked about using magic on her, she would have asked if they were going to pull a rabbit out of their hat as well. “So, like magic instead of anesthesia?” She asked, looking back at Magius while she waited for Huck’s opinion.
Huck smiled, and gave Lexi a gentle nod. “As long as it’s you wielding the magic, doc,” he said to Magius, “And not me.” He was pretty comfortable with the doctor’s magic, as long as it was in the proper hands.
Magius nodded, his voice warm. “Yes. Exactly. Anesthesia presents dangers, always, no matter how good the operators are. Magic can duplicate the effect without the danger, by using a magical effect, instead of a biological and chemical one. This is why wise men were so prized in the darker times of the world. The ability to circumvent the normal processes and give over a chance to have magical processes instead, to be safer rather than take chances, was a boon even superstitious people could see.”
Magius smiled to them, pleased. “Magic is a tool like any other. It can be used for good or ill. I am a doctor, and I use it, like all my tools, to aid my patients.” He nodded again. “The procedure would take less than an hour, and would be fairly comfortable. There would be some ache afterward, but nothing a mild painkiller could not handle.”
If Huck trusted Magius using his magic on her and from the sounds of it, it would be a lot better than using medication, she was all for it, “Alright. Lets do it then. Can we schedule the actual procedure for after this weekend? My best friend’s wedding is Saturday and I definitely don’t want to be in any pain or anything for that.” She’d do whatever tests they needed to do before that, but she wanted to be in tip top shape for Stefan’s wedding.
Huck nodded, realizing to his own personal amusement that his dream self probably would have sooner trusted magic than medicine. He wondered if that had any effect on his viewpoint or if it was just that he trusted Magius from previous experience. He supposed the result was the same either way.
“Of course. Next week is good and we can set up an appointment for it before you leave. A few simple tests need to be done, but those take next to no time at all.” He smiled to them both, glad to be able to help them, and glad to see a couple who seemed to connected, so in tune with one another.
