Billy grinned as he dropped out of the sky next to Carol’s hangar, and changed back to his normal form. He grinned as he stretched and headed toward her office, a bottle of wine to offer and a grin to bear with his red shirt, black pants, and white sneakers the same as he used to wear.
She’d been working on the F-16 today. It was still cooling down from a flight but she was in the cockpit digging through some wires and trying to figure out a short. Her butt wriggled in the air as she rerouted them.
Billy took a moment to admire before shaking his head. It would take some getting used to, today's mores. But, he definitely was glad to be home.. "Ground Control to Major Danvers, permission to come aboard?"
She jerked up, hitting her head on a console and cursing, then she twisted around and looked down. “Hello! How can I help you?”
Billy winced, and shook his head. Then he smiled. “Why now, Carol, are you going to let a mere time travel issue and five years of growth make you not recognize a friend? Holy Moley.” The last was said deliberately, and his grin was all Billy’s.
“Oh god. I fucking hate time travel. Did I ever tell you about the time I helped some ladies in World War Two fight alien technology?” She hopped off the plane and landed next to him, sweeping him up into a hug. “Where did you go, what happened?”
Billy laughed and hugged her back his older body letting him hug her fully. “No you did not, you meanie! I’ll expect that story sometime soon!” He grinned and poked her, chuckling.
He nodded then. “I was coopted by Nate Sumers to try to see if we could retrieve his future son from an alternate future here. But there was an explosion, left over damage from the Reapers, apparently, and me and another of the group were dropped into Egypt, before history. The rest is a rather long story.”
He smirked. “I could tell it to you over a chocolate milk, if you like?”
“Chocolate milk sounds good,” she replied with a laugh. “Damn. Ancient Egypt? Before sphinx Egypt?”
“Before Egypt Egypt, really, in the time of myth and legends. We had some interesting adventures.” He had definitely not expected half of what had happened. “We eventually traveled to ancient Europe and settled there. More open society toward those who had abilities, in those darker times.”
“Probably helpful,” she agreed, nodding. Not that she really understood half of that, but that didn’t really matter. Her friend had made do.
Billy grinned at her, no longer having to look up at her. “How is business? How have you been?” It had been a few weeks at least since they had met even in this time.
“It’s okay.” She gestured around. “It’s pretty much the only thing I can do right now. I can’t fly without my planes. Long story, really.”
“What? But… what happen-- wait, long story, right? “ He hmmed. “Want to go get something to eat? My treat?”
“Sure. Just a sandwich though.” She rubbed at her forehead. “I’ll figure out a quick way to explain things without going dramatic.”
Billy nodded, eyeing her. “You know, you can get dramatic if you need to. I’m your friend. I understand how crazy the dreams can make things.,”
“Well, when you put it that way.” She laughed. “I’ve got some kind of growth in my head that gets worse when I try to fly or use my powers in any significant fashion.”
Billy winced. “Have you talked to any Dreamers about it?’ He stared at her and swore. “I wish I knew more magic.” Then he shook his head. “I may not be able to solve it, but I’ll be here for you, no matter what.”
“I don’t know yet what happens with it in the dreams,” Carol admitted. “But I have a feeling I’ll find out, and then I’ll know what to do with it.”
Billy eyed her, then nodded. “OKay. Just be careful.” He worried about her. She was one of his friends, darn it!
“I’ll try not to do anything too stupid.” she just wished she knew what it was and why her healing factor wasn’t taking care of it, but that was something to worry about later. “Do you have any plans now? It must be hard to remember where you left off.”
“I believe in you.” He liked her and cared, and wished he knew more.
He drew his mind to now and nodded. “Taking online classes, testing out of a bunch, then starting at the university next year, early. Its weird to live this life this way.”
“Is it? I suppose it is after so long in a different kind of society,” she replied, hands in her pockets. “I don’t think it’s any better. Just different.”
“Nah. Not better, not worse, just different.” He grinned at her. “I’m getting along and romancing a woman whom I have loved as long as I have known her.”
“That’s a feeling I can understand.” She grinned at Billy. She wished she’d realized how she’d felt about Jess sooner. Speaking of. “Jess and I asked each other to marry each other.”
Billy whooped and hugged her. “Alright! Congratulations! That is awesome!” He bounced on his toes, still very much the happy kid sometimes. “Tell me everything!”
“We’re probably going to elope, but there’s not much to tell. We were talking and it kind of had us blurting it at each other. I had this ring. I made the stone myself, squeezing a diamond out of coal and everything….” She looked sheepish.
“Awww, now that is fantastic!” Billy grinned and hugged her, nodding. “You are amazing, and you deserve awesome happiness!”
“Well, I want to live life while it’s there to live,” she replied, hugging him back. “I’m not going to be stupid and miss out.”
“Good.” Billy smiled at her. “I’d hate to never have a chance to race you again, or take a plane you with you, some day. So no dying.” He waggled a finger at her.
“No dying,” she promised. “I don’t have any plans on that for a very, very long time.”
“Good on you.” Billy grinned, then nodded to her. “Lets go get that drink, and we can talk and catch up.”
“I’m buying,” Carol commented, putting her arm around him as they walked. “Least I can do.”
