Lorna wasn’t very interested in wandering the town after her time in the past. She’d missed her friends most, so she was spending a lot of time with them, especially Match and Mavis. She’d had so few people she could really connect with in the past, so she was happy to see them again.
She had an assortment of snacks and things sitting out, which Darius was happily grazing. She tried to shoo him away, but teenagers were just attracted to junk food. Eventually she gave up and let him stay. He wouldn’t bother Mavis much, she was sure.
Mavis didn’t mind having Darius around. He was one of the family, and if Lorna and Alex had been gracious enough to put up with her, she could make room for their cousin. She sort of liked having a bigger family after being an only child for nineteen years--or a hundred nineteen years, depending on perspective. It was all good.
Lorna set a pitcher of lemonade down and poured glasses for everyone. “So what do we all want to watch?”
Darius mumbled around a mouthful of pretzels, then shrugged to show he didn’t care. Lorna giggled and turned to Mavis. “Maybe a romantic comedy?”
“Fine with me,” Mavis said, settling down. It was no secret she was something of a romantic, and her dream self was even more so. “Is there something you have in mind?”
Darius sighed. Then he grabbed the pretzels and pretended to mumble under his breath about ‘girls’. Lorna giggled. “Let’s see what Netflix suggests. Something sweet, but not historical romances.” She grabbed her laptop and pulled up Netflix. “It’s weird trying to settle back in after time traveling.”
Mavis made a face at Darius in kind, but she could tell he was only half complaining. “I can only imagine,” she said, “It must have been pretty weird, getting used to living in a different time, too.” In her dreams, she may have lived more than a century, but she’d also been so sheltered, she had no real concept of the era she’d been living in at any given moment.
“If you ever want to get away, though, I do have a castle you could borrow…”
“Do you really?” Lorna asked, flipping through the movies. “That’s pretty awesome.” She grinned at Mavis, then pulled up a movie. “Here, we’ll do a vintage one. This has Ginger Rogers and Marilyn Monroe in it.” She looped her arm around Mavis’s shoulders, snuggling close.
“I do! I guess I was so caught up in your timetravel stories, I forgot to mention that the deed to one Hotel Transylvania showed up on the morning of my birthday. Not that you’re ready for another adventure yet, but it’s there.” Mavis twirled a lock of Lorna’s hair around her finger. “Darius could come too,” she added, waggling her brows at the boy. “It’ll be spooky!”
Darius snorted. “Will we get a van and take Max along to solve a mystery?”
Lorna grinned brightly. “Sure, but we’ll have to change the genders. You can be Daphne, and I’ll be Shaggy.” Because Lorna was obviously Shaggy. She eyed Mavis for a second, then giggled. “I guess that makes you the leader.”
“Jinkies!” Mavis said with a giggle. “It’ll be great!” Even if the castle was probably empty of all its former inhabitants, there still might be some interesting artifacts. “I guess we can’t just pop over for a weekend, though, can we? Unless...”
They did know some people who could arrange for some pretty spontaneous travel.
“We have a spaceship, and I can fly us there really fast!” She said with a laugh. “Match can come and carry you if you want. He’s Velma, but only because he has a really terrible weakness.”
“True,” Mavis said, “I guess we just have to figure out the when.” And how much of a break from adventuring her friends needed before they got into goodness knows what might be awaiting them in Transylvania.
“Maybe after Thanksgiving? I need to start stockpiling food.” She wondered how big a turkey they would need.
“Will it get us away from the Christmas music?” Darius asked, making a face. “It’s too early, by the time Christmas gets here I won’t want to hear it.”
“Maybe,” Mavis tapped her chin. “I mean, it’s a castle, so I have no idea what kind of modern conveniences it may or may not have. If it’s like my dream, it should at least have electricity, and indoor plumbing, and stuff. So we can play whatever kind of music we want.”
Lorna giggled. “Awwww, you’re too cute to be jaded about Christmas.” She ruffled Darius’s hair, then turned her attention back to Mavis. “It might be fun to go there for Christmas, actually. Poke around, see if there’s neat stuff, then have a nice little party for us all.”
“Yeah,” Mavis agreed. “That still gives us plenty of time to plan the trip.” She was really looking forward to exploring the castle, and showing it off to her friends.
“Yep!” Lorna said with a laugh. “It’ll be fun!”
“Sweet! I’ll tell Match, after the movie; see if he has any family plans we need to work around. Do you want to tell Alex, or should we gang up on him?” She smirked. Somehow, Alex never seemed to mind when they did that.
Lorna smirked. "You know he likes it when we work on him together."
Darius sighed. "You guys are gross. I'm going to play Grand Theft Auto." He stood up and took the pretzels with him.
Mavis would have apologized, but Darius was already away, so she just shrugged, and laughed it off. "I should know better than to open my mouth around you or Alex by now," she joked. Of course, Darius was probably well accustomed to Alex and Lorna by now, and they were even more candid than Mavis.
"At least the house is plenty big enough for him to escape."
Lorna giggled. “He’s just grumpy because Alex and I have been a little more wound up than usual since we got home.” She blushed a little. “We have a lot more toys here.”
"Say no more," Mavis said with a knowing smile. She was well aware of how much Alex and Lorna liked their toys. "It must be a little strange for you, having to keep it behind closed doors again. Maybe we should give you an entire wing to yourselves in Transylvania. The place is big enough, from what I can remember."
She laughed. "Of course, it may turn out that dream memory has exaggerated things. I guess there's only one way to find out."
Lorna giggled. "There is. It'll be an adventure either way." She squeezed Mavis, kissing her cheek. "I guess it's okay that we didn't have a baby, Darius is sleeping in what we'd turn into the nursery."
Mavis hugged her, and returned the kiss, patting Lorna’s knee. “I’m sorry. I know you were really excited about trying for a baby.” She sighed, contemplating what it would be like to be a mother someday--and what her child might be like. Vampire, or mutant? Both? It was a frightening thought. “Maybe someday, you’ll find a way.”
Lorna sighed as well. "We're thinking about adoption. The world doesn't need more mutants, but there are plenty of kids in need of parents." She snuggled into Mavis again, looking at their movie. It hurt to know that she couldn't even do the most normal thing a woman could do. She was so weird she couldn't even fulfill the biological prime directive.
Mavis curled up around her friend, and held her close. She couldn’t even imagine how hard it must have been for Lorna to learn that she couldn’t have her wish. She knew there wasn’t really anything she could say, so she just offered quiet companionship.
Lorna didn't cry, which felt like a small victory. She just snuggled Mavis and let herself feel bad for a little bit. Sometimes it was the only thing to do. "We're not even watching this, are we?" She asked after a moment.
“We could be,” Mavis said, pretending to cover her mouth with her hand. “I can be quiet if you want me to. Or not, if you don’t.”
“Nah. Let’s get some ice cream and sit outside. We can watch this later.” She slowly disentangled herself and stood, offering Mavis a hand up.
“Okay,” Mavis said, peeking out the window to make sure it was dusky enough. She let Lorna pull her up, then wrapped her arms around her and gave her a long hug. “I’m glad you’re back.”
Lorna hugged her back, tightly. “I missed you so much. If I’d known we’d be gone so long I wouldn’t have gone at all.” Especially since she hadn’t even been able to help in the end. She kissed Mavis’s cheek and pulled away. “I wonder if we left and whipped cream behind?”
“Well, if we didn’t,” Mavis said, bouncing on her toes, “I definitely have some over at my place.”
