Billy had been back for a little while when he headed out to check in on Lydia. She was a good person, a good woman, and he hoped she was doing better. He remembered the night when she had been bitten by her dreams, and though it had been long ago for him, he knew it was less than a month ago for her.
So, after verifying she was home, he headed over, bringing himself, iced tea and cookies. And some movies. Why not?
He knocked when he arrived.
It was a good thing that he’d told her about his five year trip into space because if he had showed up looking like that at her door, she would have thought he was some crazy homeless guy. It seemed like every time she had guests now, it was some older guy. Her parents didn’t notice. They didn’t notice anything.
When the doorbell rang, she went and answered it. “Hey. Wow. You’re.. old.. er. Older.”
Billy grinned at her and nodded. “A bit, yes.” He brushed his hair out of his face with one hand and shook his head. “That happens when you travel in time and forget to set the alarm clock.”
Well at least he had grown up to look better. Time had done him good. “Ah. Seriously? I mean I’m asking that like I don’t believe in weird shit, but I obviously did. You were really traveling in time? Come on in.” she moved back to let him inside.
“I really was.” He followed her in. “It was supposed to be a retrieval mission, but it went awry and I got stuck in Ancient Egypt. Eventually migrated to ancient Europe, and lived in the past for five years.” He nodded./ “It was… odd.” He lifted his backpack. “I brought iced tea and cookies?”
“Ancient Egypt? That sounds pretty dangerous. And scary. So you’ve been living in the ancient days where no one had hygiene. I think I would have just taken a five year nap.” That didn’t sound like a good time to her. “Thanks.” she gestured to the couch and sat down.
“It was crazy. We were there before history started being recorded. It was wild. And we used magic to keep our own hygiene… and sometimes to cloud our senses of others’ bad ones.” He chuckled as he settled to the couch.
“How are you doing?”
“Oh. Magic. Right why didn’t I think of that?” she snorted in amusement. Forgive her, she’s a bit of a smart ass. “Well I guess.. it was fun?” Lydia didn’t think she’d want to travel in time. At least he wasn’t dirty. “I’m okay. As good as I can be.” she shrugged.
Actually she wasn’t well at all. Hallucinating things. But she didn’t know what to do about that, and hadn’t said anything to anyone.
“It was sometimes fun, and sometimes terrifying an annoying.” He shook his head. “At least I had a close friend there with me.” He nodded, then eyed her, worriedly. “No new aftereffects of the dream attack?”
“Yeah I can only imagine. I’d just go with .. terrifying and annoying.” Lydia wouldn’t be good in another time period. Not at all. She shook her head and tried to look as adamant as possible. “No, I’m fine. Honest.” Really.
“Good.” He smiled softly at her. And eyed her. Hmmmm. Sure. Okay. “Okay. If you ever need to talk, let me know, okay? I’d listen, no matter what.”
He paused and then spoke quieter. “Some weird stuff happened early this year. Some really bad stuff, and I had nightmares, and jumped a lot, for weeks after. It took me a long time to even sleep straight through a night again.”
“Thanks, I appreciate it.” Lydia just didn’t know how to talk about going crazy to someone. She wouldn’t know what to say.
She nodded some. “I know how that feels. It happens in the dreams, and then it happens for real. It’s hard to keep your head on straight.” They had some things in common then.
“Very true. I got some powers from the dreams, but also some darker incidents. I spent two weeks in a near coma because of the Dreams, and another couple of days thinking I was a giant rabbit. “ He shuddered. “Another time, I woke up with third degree burns all over my body.”
The Dreams could suck.
“Giant rabbits. Are you sure you weren’t smoking something?” she teased lightly. “No but really, that’s really awful. They do suck. I guess we’re in the same boat.” Where their dreams were hurting them. Lydia just would rather they stop.
“I’m sure.” Billy grinned. His life was very odd. “I hope we both will have better luck from here on out.” He pulled out the small bottles of iced tea and passed her one. “To getting through it, and knowing we’re not alone.”
She took the iced tea from him and raised it slightly. "To getting through it and not being alone. Thanks for coming to see me. I could use some cheering up."
“Anytime. What else are friends for?” He grinned at her. “NOt sure how great I’ll be at it, but I will definitely try. I brought some movies, and some of the mind puzzlers they use in Master’s degree studies, and cookies.” He nodded.
“That’s really better than just sitting in here and twiddling my thumbs.” She sighed and took a hold of some of the movies and puzzles and things. “Let’s play a game. That will kill some time.”
“Sounds like a plan.” He started setting out the games, so they could choose. Whatever happened, they could deal with it. Lydia was strong, and he would help her however he could.
