It was one of those mornings where everything seemed to be crystal clear. That mental thought made Fang grimace as she sat up in bed and looked at the form sleeping next to her. It had been too easy to think they’d escape their fate. Their destiny. The Goddess had other plans for them, but she hoped they could have one last day.
The previous day was still seared into her mind, and would be for all time. Vanille in that dress, the cake, and the wedding night. Gods, that wedding night. Her grimace faded into a grin.
They had...some time, she thought. They could enjoy being home again. She hadn’t been down under in years. It was their honeymoon.
She brushed Vanille’s hair out of her face, then leaned down to kiss her.
While Fang might have thought they could escape this fate, Vanille had been praying to accept it. Surely whatever passed for a Goddess here was watching over them.
Even though they'd had to deal with the dreams, and getting their marks again, and everything else. There was a chance now, Vanille had thought, to do some good with it.
The wedding had been beautiful, and Vanille would never forget it. She'd have forever to hold it close to her heart, and she'd held it so close that she'd even dreamed about it all over again in her sleep. When Fang woke her up, she still felt like she was wrapped in the happiness of that moment.
She smiled up at Fang, and stretched a bit, like a cat that had been awoken from a good nap, "G'mornin'..."
“G’morning.” Fang continued to brush at Vanille’s hair, in no hurry to rush things or to rush towards the fate she knew was their destiny. It tugged at the edge of her consciousness. But she wanted to watch Vanille grow old. See flecks of grey and then white and silver in her hair. To sit on a porch and yell at the young kids in love because they just didn’t understand yet what a lifetime together really meant. It wasn’t fair, but their lives had never been fair, and their destiny had never been their own. The only constant was having Vanille in her life.
They could do that. They could do it, later, Vanille was sure of it. After they were done saving the world.
She had to believe, because she sometimes felt like she was believing for both of them. Fang acted, she was strong and brave and she just did. Like Light, in their dream world. But Vanille believed, she prayed, she hoped, she dreamed, and she had to do that to lift her friends up.
Her hair was now fully strawberry pink, and she fingered a curly lock of it herself for a few moments before nuzzling at Fang, "Everythin's gonna be alright, Fang. I know it. Y'don't have t'look so sad."
“Jus’ feel like we lost so much time we coulda had otherwise. And the accident was all my fault. But... We’ll be together an’ that’s what’s important.” She kissed the tip of Vanille’s nose, then slipped out of bed. She walked nude to the window and stared out it. “It’s good to be home.”
"We got all the time we were s'posed to have," Vanille replied, gently. She didn't regret any of what life had given her anymore, except maybe the part where she'd learned how to kill a person. But maybe even that lesson had lead to good things. She knew she could stand on her own two feet now if she had to. Being able to protect Fang, too, was important.
Even if the older, stronger woman didn't like having to be protected sometimes. Or any of the time.
"It IS good t'be home though. I missed it. California's nice, but it's just not the same. If I'm gonna be crystal for hundreds of years, I'd rather be doin' it here," Vanille admitted, as she crawled out of bed.
She’d come to accept the protection. It was only fair right? To stand on the same ground as equals? Fang could accept it if she looked at it that way. She reached for Vanille’s hand. “It’ll be a long drive. We should stock up on Jerky.”
She agreed with her wife’s sentiments, and looked down at her ring. Holy gods it was real!
"I like th'way you think." Vanille's hand squeezed Fang's. The ring on her finger constricted a bit, reminding her that it was there. She wasn't used to wearing jewelry, but this one was a nice fit.
"I guess I musta really liked the way you think, since I married ya!" She declared, with a huge grin. As life changes went, though, this one didn't make her feel much different, really. Happier, maybe. But Fang was always supposed to be by her side, married or not.
The long drive was a concern, and Vanille decided to get some clothes on before their nakedness got distracting. She hummed a bit as she picked something out, "We're gonna need sandwich fixin's too, and a big cooler full o'drinks!"
Fang had just wanted to do something right for the first time in her life. Make Vanille happy, make her feel a part of something, and a part of her life. Sure, it was just a ring. But it was a ring.
“We’ll hit the store on the way out. You get the fixin’s, I get the beer and water.” Maybe the Goddess Etro frowned on beer but she didn’t know and she didn’t care. She walked past Vanille and opened her own bag. “I uh…” She pulled out her Sari. “I packed our…” She lifted her eyes to meet Vanille’s.
"Oh! Our things! Our real things!" Vanille clapped her hands together and ran over to Fang, discarding the outfit she'd been planning on wearing in the process. Her fingers touched at the material in Fang's sari, and she smiled a bit, "Yeah, we gotta wear these. And put on our
weapons, too!"
“I hadn’t been sure you’d even want them. You were so...ambiguous ‘bout them before,” she replied, pulling on the Sari and shivering at the familiar feel of the fabric. Her staff was in it’s three parts, and that she took out of the suitcase next. Then she handed Vanille her weapon.
"That's only 'cause I didn't want you to know I was me. I was so scared that you'd be disappointed in me for causin' all of those problems! Makin' you do it alone and then pretending that I didn't remember, and all of that." Vanille explained, while shimmying into her own outfit.
She took the weapon from Fang's hand with an amount of reverence, "We can't change who we are in either place. We just gotta embrace it."
“You need to stop hidin’ things. But I think you got better at that.” She darted her eyes, then put her arm around Vanille. “Come on. I know we’re not in any hurry, it’s not gonna happen for awhile, but I’d like to get a good spot for the sunrise….”
Vanille grinned up at Fang and nodded her head. She took one last moment to carefully tie her hair up into the pigtails she'd been known for back in Oerba, then gave Fang a thumbs-up, "Let's get stocked up and get goin'! Once we settle in at the right spot, we can take as long as we like."
They really did have all the time in the world. Fang was in no hurry. Who would be when they know they’re going to sleep for a long time? Perhaps even centuries. It wasn’t even clear what their task would be, this new Focus. But she would do it with Vanille, and maybe then, maybe when that’s done they’ll be allowed their reward. To be together, at peace.
