Being home again after so long was strange. Things were different than she remembered, but then she’d changed things. Ginger was still there, which was a small relief. But…
All signs of Laura had vanished. In fact she was back in her apartment with Cass, not even in the house on the farm. She didn’t really mind, except how weird the apartment was.
Jubilee had lived in every place imaginable. Apartments were weird.
Cass had no idea what her best friend had been through. She hadn’t been affected by the whole time thing except that her memories of Laura were no longer there. As far as she knew Jubilee had, had a couple different relationships over the last couple of months since Cass had moved in with her. The only thing that Cass knew that was different was that Jubilee was a vampire again. How that had happened, she wasn’t really sure, but she hoped that Jubilee would feel that she could talk to her about it when she was ready.
Now that Violet had moved to campus, it was just Cass and Jubilee again and while Cass missed having Violet around, she enjoyed spending time with Jubilee, because most of the time it felt like having a sleepover. “So, no flavour of the week?” She asked as she pulled her long black hair into a sidebraid.
“Nope.” She flopped back on the couch and writhed a bit in that sort of ‘I have energy and nothing to do with it’ sort of way. She sat back up again and looked at Cass. She waggled her eyebrows.
Cass quirked a brow at Jubilee as she wound a hair elastic around the end of the brain, “What’s that eyebrow waggle for?” With Jubilee, it could have meant any number of things. Cass had known the other girl for quite some time now and she was still a complete mystery sometimes.
“Wanna be my new flavor? You know you want the hotness.” Somehow, saying that didn’t seem to work so well or fit her tongue the way it used to. Jubilee had been a lot more subdued and less...crazy, over the last week. Like a sudden personality change.
“I think I’ll pass,” Cass smirked and lounged out on the couch, “As much as I love you, I’m still not into chicks.” Cass had definitely noticed that there was something a little different about Jubilee lately, but she didn’t want to pry too much unless Jubilee wanted to talk.
“Too bad. It’s awesome.” She twisted around on the couch until she was upside down, head on the floor. “Ever feel like something is missing?”
That was a dangerous question and considering Cass was currently compelled to tell the truth, one that she couldn’t stop herself from answering, “All the time. But I’ve always felt like that. I mean, I missed so much, being forced to train all the time, so even now that I’m free to do whatever I want, I still feel like I’m missing out on something.” Whether or not that was what Jubilee meant, that was how Cass felt.
“Yeah. That’s the truth.” It wasn’t what she meant but that was good. It meant that the timeline had definitely been altered. Not that it took much effort on her part to see. “I’m bored. Lets go out? Or do you wanna just hang?”
“I was thinking of just staying in tonight. I’m so exhausted from my workout and training today that I don’t think I’d last very long if we went out.” Cass had started training two younger girls not too long ago, so her schedule during the day was pretty packed now, considering she also took kickboxing, had her own workout schedule and was starting to coach. “We could watch a movie or something.”
“Okay. You want Chinese?” she sounded innocent, and she really was, she totally just meant food! “I just need to remember how to netflix….”
Cass couldn’t help but laugh at Jubilee’s question, but she nodded, “Yeah, Chinese sounds good. I’ll just workout extra tomorrow. I’ll get the menu.” She was still smiling as she got up from the couch, but it faded a little at Jubilee’s next comment and she glanced over at her best friend, “What do you mean, have to remember how? It’s not that hard.”
“Uh.”
Jubilee rubbed the back of her neck. “Okay this is gonna sound crazy. But I need to talk to someone who wasn’t involved and …. well it’s gonna make me sound crazy.”
“Crazier than you already are?” Cass had seen Jubilee act a lot of different ways during the time she’d known her, but this was probably the strangest. Turning back to face her, Cass sat back down on the couch, “Okay, so what do you need to talk about?” She was really curious now. Chinese food could wait.
“I went back in time. On accident.”
Cass stared at her friend for a moment, unsure of exactly what to think. Any other time she’d laugh and assume she was just messing with her, but she could tell that this time Jubilee wasn’t joking. “What? How? When?” She didn’t know how it was possible, but considering everything else that had happened in the last year, she wasn’t ruling out that it could happen.
“We were going to help someone out, but something went wrong and me and John ended up in like...gold rush days.” She rubbed the back of her neck. “I was already starting to turn again so...well…”
Cass’ brows rose as she listened to Jubilee. She couldn’t believe that had actually happened. How hadn’t she realized that had happened? “But, you were never gone. Why wouldn’t I have noticed?” Duh, it had been time travel. Obviously time travel meant she could have come back right after she left and no one would have been the wiser.
“‘Cause I came back like an hour after I left. We didn’t really change… much.” She darted her eyes.
“That’s….that’s crazy.” Cass said, watching Jubilee, “I mean, I believe you, but it’s still crazy. When you say you came back an hour after you left, do you mean you were gone for an hour?” She was curious how exactly they’d time traveled and how they’d got back. When she heard time traveling she automatically thought of Back to the Future, but she doubted they’d traveled in a delorean.
“Nah. Most of us were gone for a few years. I was gone for like a hundred and fifty. Which was awesome sometimes and not so awesome othertimes. You know that whole myth about the band playing to the end on the Titanic?” She nodded her head. “True.”
A hundred and fifty years? Were it not for the fact that she’d already mentioned already becoming a vampire again when she was accidentally sent back in time, Cass would have asked how she survived that long, “Wait….you were on the Titanic? Are you serious?!”
She nodded her head. “Yes. I figured I could do something. Maybe help just one person if I could.”
“Wow. So, you probably saw a lot more historical stuff, huh?” Cass wanted to hear all about the things Jubilee did and saw while she was in the past, but at that moment her stomach growled, “Okay, we’re ordering food then you’re telling me everything.” She was extremely curious now.
“Yeah! The old west, the Civil War...some other stuff too. The 1870s in Paris were awesome. So were the roaring twenties. Took me forever to lose the flapperspeak.” Jubilee made a face. She was going to skip over what she did in China in the 30s. It was too painful to think about.
“Hold that thought,” Cass said, getting to her feet and going into the kitchen to get the chinese food menu. There was so much that she wanted to ask Jubilee about and she was sure that there was going to be enough to cover the time while they waited for the food as well as when the food got there. This was going to be a long and interesting night.
