Lexi wasn’t sure what it had been about the dreams that had shaken her so much; it wasn’t as if they had been particularly bad or anything. They’d mostly consisted of finding out that Stefan was drinking blood again and finding him in Chicago in the 1920s. She’d spent the majority of the next two decades rehabilitating him. After that her and Stefan were in New Orleans in 1942 and Stefan was getting ready to go off to war. Damon had also been there and Lexi had encouraged Stefan to reconcile with his brother. It wasn’t like the dream about her parents dying or Elijah turning her or even her brother being killed, but when Lexi had woken up, instead of waking Huck up, like she normally would have done when something was troubling her, she slipped out of bed, went into the living room and began pacing.
Huck was having his own dreams, and sleeping fitfully, so when he flung an arm over Lexi’s side of the bed and realized that she wasn’t there, he came awake pretty quickly. First, he checked the bathroom, and then padded out to the living room, rolling his shoulders as if to shake off the imagined--or perhaps remembered--beating that he’d taken in his dreams.
“Lexi?”
Lexi was barefoot as she paced back and forth in the space in front of the couch, clad in only shorts and the tank top she’d worn to bed. At the sound of Huck’s voice, she turned towards him and bit her bottom lip, “Hey. You okay?” Of course that was probably his line for her, but he also looked somewhat rattled and before she knew it, she was across the room, her arms going around Huck’s neck as she leaned into him.
He gave a noncommittal grunt, wrapping his arms around his girl and holding her close. "Just reliving my childhood," he said, knowing full well that she'd know that it was not a pleasant experience for him. "You?"
She hated thinking of him reliving his childhood, even if it was only in dreams. She knew that he couldn’t hurt him now, but it didn’t stop her from hating the idea of him feeling that way again. “Just more vampire dreams.” She lifted her head off his shoulder, looking into his eyes, glad, not for the first time, that they were just about the same height and she didn’t have to look up at him. It was just one more thing that made them equals.
Huck searched her face, his brow knitting in concern. "How are you feeling?" Even if the dreams didn't change her, it never seemed like they were pleasant. People weren't meant to live forever.
“A little shaken up. I don’t know why. I mean, they weren’t bad dreams this time.” Lexi sighed, staying close to Huck, his arms around her were comforting no matter what was going on, “I helped Stefan get control of himself after he fell off the wagon in the twenties. Then we found Damon in New Orleans in 1942 before Stefan went off to war. It was his way of making up for the people he’d killed or something,” A vampire fighting in the war seemed like an absurd thing, but Stefan had needed to do it as penance or something. Of course it had been her idea.
Running his fingers through Lexi’s hair, Huck rubbed his girlfriend's back as she talked. Fighting a war was probably not a bad job for a vampire, though it might leave him with a passel of survivor’s guilt and PTSD if he didn’t have the package deal already. Angst seemed to come with the territory. But if Stefan had gotten himself clean, and come home in one piece, then there was probably something else that was bothering Lexi about the whole thing.
“How did it go?”
As Huck began rubbing her back, Lexi leaned against him a bit more. "Fine. Although, Damon tried to reconcile with Stefan and was going to go with him, but I knew that Damon still drank human blood and Stefan could fall off the wagon easily around him so I convinced Damon to leave without saying anything to Stefan." She felt a little bad about that, even if it was only a dream, but in real life Stefan and Damon were closer than ever, so she couldn't really feel bad for long. "But it's not the dreams that have me all uneasy."
Huck didn’t need to tell Lexi that meddling could lead to more trouble than it mended. She already knew that. And it wasn’t as if she were meddling in real life, at the moment. “What’s wrong?”
Unless Damon did something extremely awful, Lexi had no intention of trying to keep Stefan and Damon apart. She was glad that her best friend and his brother were as close as they were at that moment. When Huck posed the question, Lexi sighed and looked him in the eyes, “What happens if I change, Huck? What if I become a vampire?”
He hugged her, and kissed her forehead. “Then we help you learn to manage it. We get blackout curtains, whatever else we have to do.” He knew Lexi would never hurt him on purpose, and he’d do whatever he could to help her. “I won’t love you any differently.”
In the dreams Lexi had exceptional control. She drank human blood and was able to control herself around humans unlike Stefan when he was in Ripper mode so she knew that it was possible, but there were other things that she was worried about. “But you’d still age and I wouldn’t. We could never...we’d never be able to have a family.” She certainly wasn’t ready to have a baby now, but it was definitely something she’d want in the future and if she became a vampire then she’d never be able to have a baby.
Huck was quiet for a moment, just rocking her in his arms. Being with Lexi had brought up all sorts of questions, questions that they’d had to work through together, that he might never have dealt with otherwise. His fear of relationships, and of getting close to someone. His views on marriage and family. It was hard work, sometimes, but it was good--and he believed he was becoming a better person for it.
He wasn’t particularly concerned about what people would think of HB Finn having a hot, young trophy wife, but he knew that watching him grow old would be hard for her--especially if she wasn’t able to have children and grandchildren to look forward to.
“But there’s other ways to have a family,” he said, thinking aloud as ideas began to surface in his mind. Huck was nothing if not full of ideas. “We could adopt. We could be foster parents. We could…” Aha! “We could have a surrogate. If we harvest our genetic material now, we could have a baby that was one hundred percent, biologically ours, even if you change. If you’re comfortable finding someone else to carry it for you--because I know that can be pretty emotional. But it’s an option.”
Whatever they decided, he just wanted her to know that he was willing to support her through it all. Willing to move heaven and earth to be with her, and make her happy.
Adopting and fostering were all well and good, Lexi had nothing against either of those options, but she’d always wanted a baby that was biologically hers and she was about to mention that when he spoke again. She’d never thought about a surrogate, but that was actually not a bad idea. Like he’d said, it would be a big decision, not only for them but for someone else, but it was definitely a viable option, “I could be down for that. As long as we found someone who wasn’t crazy and wouldn’t run off with our fetus.” She managed a small smile at that. She knew that it would be hard, watching family grow old and die around her if she changed, but if she constantly had family around her then it might not be as hard.
Of course that brought up yet another difficult question that she’d been thinking of, but hadn’t wanted to ask Huck. Now seemed like the best time though, “Would you ever want to change? To stay with me?” It would be completely up to Huck. She’d never force him to become a vampire, but if he wanted it then she’d turn him if it meant they could be together forever.
“Well…” He shrugged his shoulders. “I guess that would be something to consider, as a part of marriage. If your lifespan turns out to be that much longer, and it’s an option to extend mine…” He’d never really thought about it concretely, but he knew he was going to have to at least be open to the possibility, now.
Huck had never actually uttered the M word and Lexi knew why he had issues with it so she had never pushed. She was happy with the way things were and until they were both 100% ready for that next step there was no point in bringing it up. “I’m glad this isn’t completely freaking you out. Other guys would think I was completely insane and run for the hills.” She gave him a small smile, but at least it reached her eyes then placed her hands on his cheeks and gave him a soft kiss. She really did have the best boyfriend.
Huck may not have uttered the word, but he knew it was something Lexi wanted, along with a family. He knew it was something they were working toward. If he could accept the fact that she might live forever, he might as well accept that.
He smiled. “Maybe I’m a little freaked, but we’ll figure it out.” He tucked her hair back from her face, and kissed her. “It’ll be okay.”
