Alex sighed as he watched the hills and valleys of Upper New York State, and sat next to Lorna, with the sunset coming swiftly on. “Hey, baby.”
Six years had stretched on since they had arrived in this time, and despite some wild adventures, they had survived. He wondered if they would ever get home sometimes, but most of the time, he just smiled and shook his head. They had a good life. And as long as he was with her, he knew everything would be okay.
Whatever it took.
Lorna smiled, opening her eyes again. She spent the first part of every night trying to signal Nate. She didn’t mind the past too much, but she missed her cell phone and her job. She missed not wearing a wig or a hat and she really missed pants. Most of all she missed their crazy, mixed up family. She wanted to hang out with Darius and go dancing with Mavis.
“Hey babe.”
“Have I mentioned how much I love you?” She was amazing, and despite missing things, she still managed to make him feel good. She was loving and kind and smart, and without her he would be lost. “You make this whole time travel madness worthwhile.”
She smiled, moving closer to him. “I love you too. I’d be really bummed out if you weren’t here with me. This is crazy, but with you I can tolerate it.” She leaned over, kissing him softly.
He kissed her back, and he snuggled close, feeling that nothing could make him blink much after this. Being around Lorna had made him just want to do it more. “If we get rescued, it’ll be weird, you know? Going back to that.”
“I know. I’ll be going back to school to teach kids again, and dealing with people who’ll never in their lives be confronted with a time machine full of snakes.” She snickered a little, resting her head on his shoulder. “I hope everyone makes it back okay.”
Alex snuggled her close, pulling her to his lap and grinning, kissing her ear and snuggling her closer. “It’ll be amazing. Being back there without crazy time machines and weird western adventures.” He slid his hands into her lightly laced clothing and stroked her skin…
… and that was exactly when there was a burst of mental static, loud and bright, then cleared up and Nate, Nathan fucking Summers, was loud and clear in their heads. Distant, but loud and clear.
--you hear me? This is Nathan Summers,. broadcasting up and down time with Professor and John Jones’s assistance. Can you hear me, anyone?
As soon as their minds were fully touched, Nate’s mind lit up with warmth and recognition. Lorna! Alex! I’ve got you!
The initial telepathic contact made Lorna jump and shield herself and Alex reflexively. When she figured out what was going on Lorna sighed, pressing her head to Alex’s shoulder. The wavelength of his telepathy was difficult to find, but she did her best to try to boost the signal. She clutched Alex tight when she felt the connection snap into place. Thank goodness, is everyone else okay?
I’m connecting to them now… and yes! I have everyone. Are you ready to come home? There was a feeling of echo as he spoke to others at the same time, and then a swearing as something sparked near him and John held the ceiling up above him. KInda need to know now! The Station is coming apart!
Alex swore and pushed his answer loud and clear. Yes!
More than ready! Lorna seconded. I’ll help you keep the station up when we get there.
No time for that! The Station is mostly antimagnetic. And then they were in the middle of the time bay in Greymalkin. Sparks and damage components were everywhere and a shimmering forcefield held back space as a gaping hole out into it, not there before, showed mere feet away. Above them, A green man, large as a house, held up the ceiling as it fractured and broke. Others were popping in all around them, in different states of disarray.
Nate, behind controls, looking singed, bloody and tired, had one moment to glance at them, and smile, before there was an explosion that rocked the station, and he shouted. “Professor! Initiate Emergency bodyslide of everyone else but me to the special ward at irvine General, now!” And as he glanced at everyone around him, the power swept over them and deposited them into another room, one clinical and white.
Alex swore, and blinked,. then glanced around. “Holy heck… we’re in Irvine General.” they were in a massive room used for trauma emergencies, rarely used. Damn.
It had all happened so fast, but they were home!
Others were appearing all around them and Magius bustled in, followed by a couple of others. “Welcome back to the present. Most of you know me. My name is Doctor Magius. I know the last thing you want right now, is to have someone poke and prod at you, but since you’ve been in different times, you’ll need to be checked out. Thankfully, magic means that takes minutes instead of days or weeks. I’m sure you all have questions, and I’ll be around to each of you by groups. Please rest, and stay calm.”
