Lexi was looking forward to Stefan and Rebekah’s wedding. She hadn’t been to a wedding in a long time and certainly not one where it was one of her friends who was getting married. She was so glad that Stefan had found such an awesome girl like Rebekah and was glad that he’d finally asked her to marry him. She had just left the bridal store after having her last fitting for her Maid of Honor dress and had headed over to the mall after to look for a pair of shoes to go with it. She may have actually had a pair in her closet that would work, but she wanted to see what else she could find before deciding on the old ones.
She also had to get the favors and decorations for Rebekah’s bachelorette party, so she figured she would just kill two birds with one stone.
Emma was a terrible girl. It was pretty obvious when one looked at her in street clothes, all jeans and leather jackets. No miss no frills. Unfortunately for her, her work required her to dress up, and she was no good at it. Especially in California, working for celebrities... They expected pencil thin heels and teeny tiny mini dresses. Okay, so Emma looked good in them, but she didn't necessarily like them. Still, after her last job had ended up with a glass of wine down a beautiful white dress, Swan was required to shop for a few new ones and she hated every minute of it.
She was ending her day with shoes because though she disliked trying on dresses, she actually liked shoe shopping. Okay, heels weren't her favorite. But she could try on boots, too. She was distracted by a particular store window when she nearly ran into a blonde woman. "Shhh--" Emma stifled her curse before it escaped, because the poor woman didn't need to think she was swearing at her. "Sorry. Didn't see you," Emma managed, flashing an apologetic smile.
This wasn’t the first time that Lexi had almost collided with someone while distracted over something in a store window so her response was to smile at the other blond and shake her head, “It’s no prob. Trust me, pretty things distract me all the time.” Shoe stores appeared to be the place Lexi was meeting everyone these days. After all, it was this same shoe store where she’d met Lydia. “So, which ones was it?” She asked, glancing back at the display.
Emma was the tiniest bit surprised the woman wasn't annoyed. Sure, it was a bear collision, not an actual one, but it was probably still startling. Maybe people in California were just more laid back? Emma laughed a little at the joke. "Lots of things here to be distracted by, aren't there?" Emma was a horrible shopper but she couldn't deny the displays were beautiful. The question was unexpected, but after a beat Emma indicated the pair of boots she'd been admiring. "I have too many as it is, but I love those." Emma might have to avoid them or she would take them home.
Lexi smirked a tossed her long blond hair behind her back, “Oh my god, I know exactly what you mean. I’ve lost count of how many pairs of boots I have. If I bring home one more pair my boyfriend is going to give me one of those looks for sure.” If Lexi was going to buy another pair of boots, she had to get rid of a pair she already had, but then again she was already planning on going through her side of the closet and donating a few things anyway. She just needed to find the time and between work, the dreams, spending time with Huck and prep for Stefan and Rebekah’s wedding, it was probably going to have to wait until after November.
Emma wasn’t really the sort to just make conversation with strangers, but since her arrival in California she was attempting to be better about being friendly. Emma Swan and friendly didn’t seem to belong in the same sentence and she was trying to change that. How better than by talking to someone she’d randomly met? Hey, it was better than nothing. “No boyfriend to give me looks but there’s also no room on the floor of my closet.” And in her shoe organizer. Yup, she had a problem. And California was a little warm for boots! “Um. I’m Emma. It’s nice to meet you. I really am sorry for nearly clotheslining you.”
Lexi was a naturally friendly person. She’d always been that way for as far back as she could remember. She’d always enjoyed being the center of attention, but had never become one of those stuck up, bitchy girls. Then there was the fact that she worked at Disneyland so she it was her job to be friendly. “Lexi. Don’t even worry about it. No one got hurt, so it’s fine.”
Lexi was a nice name. Emma nodded slightly, giving the woman a small smile. Emma could manage this sort of thing, better than she gave herself credit for. It was like riding a bike, maybe she hadn’t totally forgotten how to get along with others. “Okay, good. I’m glad I didn’t actually hit you. I’m really not the sort to be distracted but I think my eyes got away from me. I’m trying to pick up some things for work and this is my last stop.” Was it a little strange to tell Lexi that when they’d just met? Maybe. Oh well.
“What do you do?” Yes, Lexi was a bit nosey, but Emma had brought it up first so it was only logical that Lexi would ask, “I was on my way inside too. Looking for shoes for my friend’s wedding.” As she spoke, she started moving towards the entrance to the store, gesturing for Emma to follow her.
Emma hesitated for a moment, but this was what she wanted, right? So she fell into step behind the taller blonde. The question was kind of personal but Emma didn’t mind sharing that part of her life. Work was always easy conversation. “I’m a body guard, believe it or not.” And most people didn’t, because Emma wasn’t very tall and though she was clearly fit she wasn’t necessarily imposing. Which was kind of why she was good at her job, they never saw her coming. “Usually I have to do the hidden in plain sight thing, which in LA means short dresses and heels. I’m kind of still getting used to it.” She didn’t totally hate it but it was certainly weird. “And you?” Lexi had wondered about Emma’s occupation, after all, so it seemed fair to ask the same.
“Really?” Lexi asked as they went into the store, glancing over her shoulder at Emma, “That’s pretty cool. Ever had to take anyone down?” Lexi had hit one of her exes once for being a complete jerk, but she’d never actually taken someone down the way a bodyguard might. She was tempted to ask Emma if she worked for anyone famous, but she didn’t think that Emma would be able to tell her that even if she did, “I work at Disneyland as Rapunzel and Aurora.”
“Yup. Really.” Emma did not look as intimidating as most bodyguards, but that did not mean she wasn’t good at it. She was quite scrappy, and had taken plenty of self defense and takedown classes. She was pretty lethal, not that she used those abilities unless she had to. “And I have, actually. Usually they don’t get that far, but I’ve done it before.” It was usually a pain, she always had to have her dresses dry cleaned after taking someone out. Scuffling around on the floor was no good for her nice things.
“Oh, wow. That must be something.” Emma had actually never been to Disney anything, but she knew enough about the park that she understood what the job entailed. “That must be hard work. All those people.” Considering Emma wasn’t exactly a social butterfly, it wasn’t surprising that the hordes of people were a little intimidating to her. “Do you like it?”
“I love it!” Lexi said, grinning as she picked up a pair of strappy sandals and inspected them for a moment before putting them back, “I mean, it can get a little tiring, standing around and especially when it’s really hot, but I love seeing how happy I make little kids and even older people.” Lexi didn’t just get kids coming to her for pictures and autographs and that was what she loved; Disney wasn’t just for kids. “Do you like your job?”
Emma was eying some platform heels with something like a grimace. She didn’t necessarily care for heels, but they were a part of the uniform. And at least platforms were moderately more comfortable than stilettos. She grabbed a box of rather boring black ones but she’d rather find a good pair of heels and move onto something she appreciated more -- boots. “I’ve never actually been to Disney World, but it must be nice to get to interact with the kids.” Emma was not good with kids, but she liked them. In small doses. “I guess that depends on when you ask me. I like it most of the time. I like that I’m good at it.” Was that weirdly personal to tell a stranger? Oops. Maybe.
“I’ve never been to Disney World. Just Disneyland, but I want to go soon.” She knew that Disney World was ten times bigger than Disneyland and that was definitely part of the appeal. She picked up a glossy pair of mauve pumps with open toes with would go nicely with her dress. She then proceeded to slip off her sandals and replaced them with the pumps, making her even taller than she already was. She knew what kind of shoes Rebekah was wearing, so she knew she wouldn’t wind up being taller than the bride. “That’s good. You want to be good at your job.”
"I guess I should have said I've never been to Disney Anything. I've wanted to, but never got around to it." Emma was probably too old to go now without a kid, and she definitely was not signing up for one of those just to go to an amusement park. "I like those," Emma commented with a small smile. Lexi was not afraid of a heel, apparently, but she looked good in them so why should she? Emma grabbed another box of black ones with studs on the heel. One of them would work, more than likely. "Shopping for something in particular, or just for fun?"
“You should definitely go. Get a group of friends together and go.” Lexi enjoyed seeing older people come to the parks in groups and they tended to enjoy it even more than the kids did sometimes. “Trying to find shoes to go with my dress for my best friend’s wedding. I’m the Maid of Honor.” She said, removing the shoes and placing them back in the box.
"You think so?" Emma neglected to mention she didn't have friends to gather because that was kind of just depressing. Obviously she couldn't go alone, that'd be even worse, but maybe she could find someone. "Maybe I will. I've always wanted to." Kids in the system couldn't afford vacations and even if she could, who would have taken her? There was nothing really holding her back now, though, except the worry she wouldn't enjoy it as an adult. "Oh, really? That's quite an event to shop for. I hope you find something." Emma probably couldn't offer helpful advice on the matter but still. The blonde wandered over to a mirror to try the pairs she had found on but frowned at the mirror. It looked strange to wear heels with jeans, at least to her.
“Oh yeah. I see groups of teenagers and twenty somethings and even older people there all the time.” She said as she continued scanning the shelves for any other shoes that would go with her dress. She glanced over at where Emma was trying on the boots, “Yeah, I can’t wait. I’m so happy he’s found such an awesome girl and they’ve got the most adorable little girl too.” Most of the time when she’d talked about the wedding people had assumed that her best friend was the bride since it wasn’t all that common for girls and guys to be best friends and she enjoyed seeing the looks on their faces when she revealed that it was the groom who was her best friend, “Those look good, by the way.” Lexi wore heels and boots with jeans all the time and liked to think of herself as a pretty good judge of fashion.
Emma had never really considered the idea of going to a theme park with any degree of serious but now… well, she was considering it. Lexi seemed to have such an easy-going attitude, it made it sound like a good idea. Maybe that was just her personality, but Emma didn’t mind. She needed a push sometimes. “That’s really nice,” Emma said with a small smile. She didn’t see that in the cards for herself, but there was a romantic hidden in her somewhere. “The groom is your friend, huh?” It seemed natural to assume that the bride would be, but Emma wasn’t as surprised as most would be. Emma got along with males better than females most of the time.
“Thanks,” Emma said, but she wasn’t convinced. “It’s … here.” She returned to her bag, pulling out the black dress she was shopping for, holding it against her frame. “Trying to find something for this. I’m not sure it’d work, I just like boots better. Any suggestions?”
Lexi ‘hmmed’ as she thought for a moment, “Do you have a regular pair of pointy toed black boots? Heeled, of course.” Lexi didn’t think she’d ever seen a pair without heels though, “You can’t go wrong with those kinds of boots.
Emma was silent a moment, considering her shoe closet in her head. Maybe she wasn’t such a bad girl after all, if she had a mental catalog of all the shoes she owned. “I don’t… think so? I don’t think I have any heeled boots, actually, they’re mostly wedges.” How was it that she didn’t have heeled boots? Emma stowed her dress again, wandering away barefoot (bad manners, but she had terrible manners at the best of times) and returning after a moment with a pair. “Like this, you think?”
Lexi watched as Emma went to look for another pair of boots and nodded, a smile upon her lips as the other blond came back, “Exactly. Those will look great with that dress.” She just hoped that Emma would be able to walk in the heels.
That was really the question, wasn’t it? Emma was better with a shorter heel, but she could learn. And that would be a beast of a kick if she needed to use them on someone. “Thanks,” she told the other woman with a short but genuine smile. “I should probably get out of here soon, I feel like I’ve been shopping forever. But … it was really nice to meet you, Lexi.” This was where it got awkward, Emma really couldn’t ask for a number or anything or she’d look like she was hitting on her, but she had enjoyed their short conversation.
