Jubilee owned the night. Well, she wasn’t Batman, but she had found a groove. She knew where to strike to feed, and how much to feed to not hurt someone. Her temptation lay more in missing a body in bed next to her,
Six years was a long time. Longer than she’d ever thought six years could be, but without the internet, without video games and movies and cat memes, the days were so long. Her feet were itching, and she needed to go and do things. She had to strike out on her own.
John was working in his office. He had gone to where Red Planet International had been founded, only to find it not there. And had realized suddenly why. And so he had founded it, with gold dug up and reinvested, and was now doing well.
When Jubilee came in, he nodded. He had felt her restlessness for awhile and smiled at her. “Hello, Jubilee. How are you?”
“Hey. How are things? How’s the foundation doing?” She still didn’t understand all that it did or all the purposes for it, but she was happy to see him happy. She rubbed at her arm and took a seat in one of his chairs. She tried to not come in too often at night - a woman wandering in and out of his office would make people talk.
“THings are good.” He smiled to her, and nodded. “Slowly growing, getting it’s footing.” Luckily, future knowledge gave him insights. He had a lot of it to call on from two lives. He smiled to her. “How are you doing? How have you been my friend?”
“I’m feeling antsy.” She rubbed at her arm and shifted in her seat. “I don’t think… maybe I need to travel around or something. I don’t get older, and I can’t fake looking older either. And I’m rather bored.”
John raised an eyebrow at that. Then he nodded. “Understandable. Of course. If you want, I can help out with travel arrangements, or will you be using your talents?” He could understand her desire to be free and out there.
“Talents, but I could use the right...passports or whatever. To move around. You know.” She rubbed her neck now. “There’s this whole big world to see.”
“Of course. I can have those for you by this evening.” Then he snapped his fingers and searched for something in the folders before him. “How would you like to ride in style, so to speak, on the first leg of your wanderings?”
He pulled out a folder and handed it over,. “Red Planet International needs some papers delivered to Japan, and despite you not being Japanese, I can give you that language, and you could deliver them with more ease than any white person could.” He grinned wider. “And it pays a nice salary, too, plus travel expenses…?”
Jubilee couldn't remember how closed off Japan was in this time, but she was more than willing to go. "Just hope China and Japan are on speaking terms right now. But I'll do it! It will be fun. I might have to ship myself in a box. The sun and everything."
John lowered his voice. “Be careful. Things are not peaceful in the world right now. Stresses are brewing that will become the first world war even as America fights its civil war right now.” Things were bad everywhere, and he worried about Jubilee.
“I’ll be careful, and I’ll keep my fingers out of anything. I already know how to feed on someone without killing them. I might miss the sun, but the night is mine.” She winked at him.
John raised an eyebrow. “Let me know when you can, where you are headed and I will try to help, and lay by some blood stores for you.” He didn’t really approve of her feeding. But that was neither here nor there.
“Thanks.” She could have taken his offer, she knew. She probably still could, but something kept her back. This way, she knew what she was, and she knew what she was capable of. She was still human, just altered. That other way wouldn’t make her human any more. “I’ll send letters. We should… meet to catch up, sometimes.”
“We should. Say… London, in five or ten years?” He would rather have seen her more often, but travel in this day and age was unpredictable.
“That would work. I’d like to get back to Paris and I can make a stop for a few years.” Jubilee had some plans for the upcoming war, but she kept those to herself.
“Sounds like a plan.” He nodded. “Then let me know when you get there and I can arrange to meet up with you.” John wanted to keep everything going smoothly.
“Yeah. Kind of like checking in. I’ll send a letter when I’m there, so you’ll know where I’m staying.” That older part of her that was still bouncy made it difficult to sit still. She was excited, and scared, but if she was going to be stuck out of her time, she might as well explore.
John nodded and rose then and handed over an envelope for her to take. with her. “Take this to the secretary and she’ll get you the documents. And be careful out there, Jubilee.” He extended his hand to her to shake.
Jubilee shook his hand and beamed. “I’ll see you in London, Mr. Jones.”
