By some stroke of luck, everyone’s voices returned once the new month hit. David wasn’t about to question that. He was just happy he could talk again. So he’d gotten a hold of Mary Margaret again and they solidified their plans, and Saturday afternoon found him driving to her house while the GPS on his phone gave him concise directions.
It was a cute house, he thought as he got out of his truck. In his hand was a small bouquet of assorted flowers he’d grabbed at the farmer’s market, though, admittedly, he was struggling with whether or not he should give them to her. On the one hand, his mother raised him to be a gentleman and to do things like that, on the other, he wasn’t sure if that made this a date or not. Admittedly, he’d gone into it hoping it was, but now he was hesitant. The dreams had made a mess out of all of it for him - from their first meeting he’d been quite taken with Mary Margaret. Now, though, he wasn’t sure if it was the influence of the dreams pushing him along or an actual spark.
Taking in a breath, David decided to just give her the flowers and to try and let things happen as natural as possible. He knocked on the door and shifted his feet a bit, waiting.
When Mary Margaret received the phone call from David, she felt instantly relieved that he could speak again. It was a strange occurrence, especially because several people were affected, with no real reason behind it. But now that it was over, and they finally made plans for Disneyland, she was starting to feel a little nervous. She knew she liked him, but wasn’t too sure what this outing was exactly. Was this a date? Or just a friendly hangout? She must have gone through several different outfits and combinations before settling for something casual - Brown pants with a lacy white shirt, and she threw a light jacket over it.
She was just dabbing on some lip gloss when she heard a knock at the door. Giving herself one more look in the mirror, she was all set to go. She grabbed her purse and walked down stairs, opening the door to greet him. “David, you made it –“ she started to say and her gaze fell to the flowers that he held. “Oh, those are beautiful.” Also a really sweet gesture that possibly did make this a date.. She decided not to over think it though, and instead, stepped aside so he could come in.
“I’m glad you found it okay. Come in. We’re lucky it’s such a nice day to go.”
David regretted the flowers almost immediately, but he smiled anyway and shrugged a bit helplessly. Taking her offer, he stepped inside and glanced around, deciding it was very … Her. Whatever that was.
“Fortunately, I’m getting pretty good at navigating Huntington Beach at least.” He glanced at her and laughed a bit. “I figured we should go sooner than later, right? Even California has to have days that aren’t so nice come winter time.”
“Really? That’s good, now you can feel like you really live here.” Mary Margaret said with a laugh, as she got a vase to fill with water. “Yeah, winters can still get pretty cold, even though we don’t get much snow. It’s definitely better to go now.” She added the flowers, admiring them for a moment.
“Thank you for the flowers. I love them. I have something for you too.” With a smile, she handed him a bunch of Disneyland brochures. There were gold star stickers next to the rides and attractions that she thought he would enjoy. She then got two of her tumblers and poured them some coffee. “How do you take it? I figure since you’re driving, I can at least do this.”
He stood there with his hands in his pockets, unsure really of what to do and not wanting to seem as awkward as he felt he was. David blinked when she handed him the pamphlets, then smiles. “Thank you. This is great,” he told her, very sincerely.
He flipped through and did his best to make a mental note of all the stickers. It would probably be best, he thought, to just hold on to them. After he folded them up and slipped them into his back pocket, he just laughed a bit. “You’re too nice, you know. I didn’t even think it was possible for anyone to be too nice.”
"You're welcome. We have to make sure you see everything you want, after all. And it's really not a big deal..." Was she really being too nice? She couldn't think of any other way to be. Mary Margaret just glanced up at him with a sheepish smile, as she shut the lids tight on their coffees. "Okay, ready? Let's go."
At that, she led the way out, closing the door behind them. "Your truck looks well rested today," she teased, from their initial conversation in the cafe. Just as he had felt about her house, Mary Margaret thought the truck suited him well. When the doors were unlocked, she got in, placing their coffees in their designated cup holders and putting her seat belt on.
Outside, David made sure to hold open the door for Mary Margaret and help her inside before heading around to the driver’s side. He did up his own seat belt and started off toward Anaheim, glancing at her a bit apologetically.
“I hope the radio is fine. I suppose I could spend the money to put a CD player in here, but, I just sort of like how old the truck is. I have some tapes in the glove compartment, though,” he added, laughing, looking embarrassed. “I should get one of those cables for my phone. So I can plug it in and listen to music like that?”
Mary Margaret couldn't help but smile at David's gentleman manners. It certainly wasn't a quality that you found everyday. When he brought up the radio, she laughed, looking at the old school cassette tape player. "The radio is fine! If you like it, you should keep it this way. I think if you get the cables, you can do just that."
She took a sip of her coffee. "My car has a CD player, but I never use it. Do you listen to your tapes anymore? I bet that's fun, must be like opening a time capsule."
She was really too good. Most girls just laughed at it, but Mary Margaret seemed to understand. Grinning, David reached across to open the glovebox and he pulled out a mix tape.
"This is my favourite. I made it when we moved to New York, listened to it the whole drive out here."
He popped it into the tape deck and Bryan Adams started playing, sounding gritty like cassettes did, but David liked it. "Cheesy, right?"
When he reaches across for the glovebox, Mary Margaret also reaches to help him since he's driving. She closes it for him as he puts the tapes in. When Bryan Adams plays, she laughs with delight and shakes her head. "It can't be any cheesier than any of the 80s and 90s artists out there. I like it," she said, humming along.
She glanced to him with a smile. "The Bangles and Cyndi Lauper always played at home when we needed something fun. That's pretty cheesy, too."
He was enjoying himself, which he knew he would be. Even the thoughts of dreams were tucked away into the back of his mind for a bit.
She was enjoying herself too, and the time seemed to pass quickly as they drove up to Anaheim. "Looks like we're almost there," she mentioned, once they started passing the signs that they were getting closer to Disneyland.
He parked the car in one of the parkades and glanced at the number, then sheepishly over at Mary Margaret. “Do you think you can remember which one we’re in?”
"I'll remember it for us," she told him, so he didn't have to worry about it. Mary Margaret got out of the car, glancing up at the parking lot number they were in. She joined him at his side then, and started heading up towards the park.
A part of David wondered if he should take her hand, but he decided to just stuff his hands in his pockets while they walked. He saw the rides and structures rising up, and he had to admit, he felt sort of like a kid the closer they got.
“All right,” he told her, looking mockingly serious as they got in line for tickets, “I’m putting my entire Disney experience in your hands.”
Mary Margaret glanced at him with a raised eyebrow as he said that. "Are you sure you're ready?" She asked, jokingly, giving his shoulder a little nudge. "You'll have fun and in Mickey Mouse ears yet," she smiled, walking up to the ticket booth when it was their turn.
"Two tickets, please." She reached into her bag for her wallet.
“You’re damn right I’m getting mouse ears. And so are you,” David told her. He put a hand on her arm to stop her and took out his own wallet, beating her to the punch when it came to paying. “Don’t even think about it,” he warned her, teasing.
"It's a deal," she said, laughing. When he went to pay, she took a step back, looking at him warmly. "Thank you. You really didn't have to do that." David kept saying that she was too nice, but she was beginning to think he was the same way.
“Tell you what, you can buy the ears.” He laughs as he makes his way to the gates, and once they’re through, he nods and looks at Mary Margaret. “All right. I’m all yours.”
