Martha had been quiet for the first few miles of the road trip to Mickey’s grandmother’s and with good reason. Just before she’d gotten off her shift that morning she’d had to tell a teenager that his father had died, which was the part of her job that she hated the most. Now, however, she was with Mickey on the way to his grandmother’s house, so now she was pulling herself out of her funk. Not too long ago, she’d gone out to catch up with Jack and he had told her that her and Mickey wound up dating even in the dreams, which so far neither of them had dreamt about. She had debated telling Mickey ever since, but in the end decided that she probably should.
Turning her gaze away from the window, she glanced over at Mickey as he drove, “So, Jack told me something interesting recently.” She was curious to see what his reaction would be to what she was going to tell him.
He had noticed that she was quiet and he reached out to place his hand over hers. He didn’t want to bother her about it, so he was willing to let her sit in silence. The radio was on low and he was just enjoying the feel of the open road and her beside him. He was glad that his grandmother was feeling better and the dreams weren’t as terrible anymore, so thank goodness for small favors. When she turned to him and spoke about Jack he couldn’t help but raise his eyebrow as he turned to look at her, “Oh yeah? What would that be?”
“Well…” Martha moved a little in her seat so she could look at him comfortably; the change in her body language showed that she was coming out of her funk, “He let it slip that in the dreams, me and you wind up dating.” There really was no way she was going to have been able to keep that to herself until Mickey wound up dreaming it, because there was no telling how long that would be. She hadn’t even had that dream yet after all. The only way she knew was because of Jack.
“Oh wow, for real?” He was kind of surprised by that. He hadn’t even seen her in the dreams yet and it didn’t sound like she had seen him in her dreams. Apparently there was more to the dreams than he had initially thought there was, especially if he and Martha were joined in the dreams already. His brow furrowed slightly as he turned to look at her, back at the road, and back at her, “Have you dreamed about me and not told me?”
Martha shook her head, “No. Last thing I dreamt about was coming to help Jack out in Torchwood. Apparently I was engaged to some guy named Tom then.” That was one other reason she’d been so surprised when Jack had mentioned her and Mickey being together in the dreams, “We were talking about Jack and his boyfriend, who is also a part of Torchwood in the dreams and he let it slip that me and you wind up dating.” She had asked Jack not to divulge anything else, because she didn’t want to know it all before it happened.
“Huh….I didn’t realize Jack was so far ahead in dreams, I guess. I’m also surprised that he met you, but I shouldn’t be because he seems like the type that would get around. Extremely charismatic and all that kind of stuff. Although if you had a boyfriend in your dreams that wasn’t me and then Jack said that we end up dating then I wonder what happened to this poor Tom fellow,” he was still curious to see how this kind of thing would actually happen in his dreams. It didn’t seem like he would be meeting Martha anytime soon in his dreams because Rose was most definitely still around in the Doctor’s life.
“Jack and I actually met in the dreams just before I left The Doctor. We saved the world. Well, I saved the world while The Doctor was old and Jack and my family were held captive by The Master.” It had only been a dream, but Martha really hated that guy. “And I have no idea how we wind up meeting since I’m working for an organization called Unit now in my dreams. My stint with Torchwood was pretty short.”
“That….is a strange dream. And what is Unit? There’s so many things that I don’t know about. I only know a few things about Torchwood and that’s mainly the fact that Jack works there. I wonder how we up getting together because Rose is still in my dreams, so you haven’t shown up yet,” he furrowed his brow a little as he reached forward to lower the volume of the radio and reached over to take her hand into his.
“Unit is The Unified Intelligence Taskforce. It’s a military organization. It’s operated as part of the United Nations or something.” Martha was still trying to figure out her more recently dreams as well. There hadn’t been a lot about Unit; it had been more about her time with Torchwood. “Well, it’s obviously way after you’ve both stopped traveling with him and sometime after I’ve stopped.” If Martha looked forward to her dreams before, she was really looking forward to finding out more now. As Mickey reached over and took her hand, she smiled and laced her fingers together with his, “Hopefully we won’t have to wait long to find out.”
“Well, I know that I’m not going to stick around with the Doctor for a long time. Rose likes him much more than I do. But, I’m enjoying the adventures while I have them. I’m slightly disappointed that we don’t really travel together with the Doctor. But like you said, hopefully we don’t have to wait long,” he smiled over at her. UNIT sounded interesting and so did Torchwood - why was he even surprised that Martha was hired to do smart things like that?
Martha smiled back at him, “Well, we don’t know yet if we get to travel with him together. Jack said something about my leaving wasn’t the last time I’d be in the TARDIS or something.” She recalled something along those lines in one of his responses to her post when she had the dream about leaving The Doctor. “So, it’s entirely possible that we somehow wind up traveling with him together.” Considering the things she’d seen and done with The Doctor and with Torchwood, she wouldn’t be surprised if she somehow found herself back in the TARDIS.
“I hate when everyone tried to be all vague and mysterious about this dream stuff. It just makes me want to know a lot more about them, but not at the same time. And maybe we will travel together. That could be a lot of fun,” he mused aloud with a smile on his face. He had traveled with Rose and that was a little awkward, but with Martha it probably wouldn’t be that bad. The Doctor had a way of making things interesting.
