Those first months were hard. Even with John’s powers and Jubilee’s nature, things were hard. Maybe more so because of that last one. Working came on and then finding a place to live. He wanted to be close to the Orange County, and he wanted to know about it.
Heck, he wanted to find out about it, more. Slowly, he gathered his information, and in the dawn of 1850, he hatched a plan, one that came to fruition in early 1851.
By that time, it had been two years since they arrived, and John had led them to San Francisco, which was booming in the wake of the start of the Gold Rush. With his powers, and unique knowledge of the future, John had made gold strikes he knew were never found in history, and thus enabled himself and Jubilee, those first few years to live with only some struggle. Nonetheless, he worked hard, and by the fall of 1851, he had founded Red Planet International, and helped to support others, as well as himself and his friend. With both of them stronger and faster than most normal people, they were able to do a lot.
He had thought he would find Red Planet International being founded, thought he would get to meet Everett Green, the first of the Green line who controlled the company. But no. He had realized, as 1851 went on, that there was no Green, and no RPI. He was to be Everett Green. He was to found the company that had come to mean so much to him. When he realized it, he sighed, and started crafting Everett. With Jubilation Lee’s assistance, he created the identity of the traveling investor, child by a mistress of an unnamed rich family, possibly nobles, from Europe. rarely seen, Mister Green was known as a kind man, a helpful man, and as no one’s fool. And so he built a second life.
In his first life, as a working man, first at a bar, then at a metal-smithy, then at a law office, John found himself slowly finding his niche, building history carefully, and making sure not to make waves. Red Planet International was founded by one Everett Green and was not a big player in the area, but a quietly helpful one. John Jones was one of those hired in those early days. Not the first, and not the last, but one of the early ones.
As the years changed, he found himself missing AJ more and more, and wishing she could be here with him, as hard as life sometimes was. Even the presence of his friend did not make it better.
Nothing eased that pain. Instead, he worked to help people quietly, and to grow Red Planet’s influence and reach without overdoing it, without overpromising it. He would make sure it was what he recalled being hired by, never knowing he was the man who had hired himself. ~fin~
