There had been a moment of chaos, and a sense of panic from Nate, and then...
Something had gone wrong. That was pretty obvious to Jubilee. She peered around, the dust clearing around them, and felt a distinct sort of silence. The air tasted funny. Too fresh.
She spun around on her heels, looking for any of the other. “Cyke? Spotty? Anyone, yo?!”
John, who had phased in a moment before, and had felt the explosion as it happened, stared around for a moment, then moved to where he could see Jubilee, floating to her through the trees. His senses stretched out, and he nodded. “Hello, Jubilee. It appears we are the only ones of our group here.” As his senses stretched out further, he found minds to look in and gently skimmed them, then blinked, shock in his mind and on his face.
“And there is more news. If the minds I am touching are right. We are in the year 1849. It appears something went very wrong when the explosion went off.”
“Shiz.” She looked down at herself, yellow coat and black tight jeans and pink rock t-shirt to match her pink sunglasses. “I’m underdressed. So how do we get back? I really need to get back, yo. I only got like a C in history!” It was better than her math grade at least.
“Nathan Summers should be attempting to reach us again and I am using my powers to try to reach him. In the meantime, we need clothing for you to disguise you.” Even as he said so, he blurred and became the image of an 1849s wanderer, with faded but good clothing on. “Come, we may have much traveling to do.” He held a hand out to her.
“You’re taking this better than I am,” Jubilee quipped. How did people talk back then? “Or is it ‘Ye are taking this better than I am?’ Huh.”
“I have my dream memories to hold me…” He looked away. “And the fear that hides in me, that I will never see my wife again, would make me useless indeed, if I let it out.” He shuddered, then recovered, forcing himself to keep moving.
“Yeah, I’m tryin’ not to think about that either,” Jubilee admitted, moving along with him. It wasn’t too hot right now, so she figured they weren’t in the Old West they show in movies. Which was a good thing to think because she figured the old west in the movies wasn’t at all like the real old west. Was this even the Old West? What decade were all those old movies supposed to even be in!
She flicked her tongue against one of her teeth. It was sharper than it had been a few days ago.
John glanced at her. “When we arrive near other people, I will project an illusion into their minds, showing them a normal couple, so they do not see anything suspicious. We will have to be careful. It may be better to fly to more civilized areas.”
“Why would...oh..” She looked down at her hands. “They don’t like chinagirls in this time an’ place do that. Shiz.”
“And our clothing, as well, not to mention our teeth are too good.” He chuckled. “We do not fit in in many ways. I can conceal those by allowing them to see what they expect, not what we are. Once we have basic information, we can try to find a city that we can learn more in.”
“Understood. Can you like...teach me how to talk like a person from here should? An’ not like some kinda racist thing like in the movies.” She still wanted to be an American. Or maybe some educated European. “I only got like a C in history but….”
“Of course. Open your mind to me…” He turned to her and gently touched her head, his mind a gentle touch, like an embrace of warmth and impartial friendliness.
“Whoa…” Jubilee closed her eyes. It was weird, but it filled her gaps and she’d be able to blend in. “Thank you. This is going to be really strange, but it’s better than being a freak.”
“You’re welcome. I have some experience with being dislocated, through my dreamself.” They were not unlike aliens dropped on a new world. “Together, we will figure out what to do.” He nodded. “We will find our own path.”
Jubilee nodded her head. “After you, Mr. Jones.” She thought that Jones was going to be a lot more accepted than Lee.
