Margaery hadn't even known the market existed until recently and now she loved stopping to get fresh ingredients. Today she was hunting for apples to make turnovers which she thought Obi-wan, her brother and Renly might like.
She stopped at a stall which looked like it was all apples and considered which would be best.
AJ was in the stall, training up some new employees. She turned to look as a customer came in, and broke into a smile. “Hi there! Can I help y’all find some apples today?”
“Hello” Margaery replied with a smile and a nod, “I’m hoping so. Could you possibly recommend the best type of apple for turnovers?”
“Oh, sure! Do you have a recipe already? Or are you looking for one?” AJ came from around the table to lead the young woman over to some bins. She pointed out the best apples for baking, the best for eating, and the best for sauce.
“I have one, it is from school cooking lessons but I figure recipes cannot change that much” Margaery smiled, “Oh they look wonderful. I have never seen so many different kinds”
“Nah, my apples here’ll work perfectly with your recipe.” AJ said, nodding once. “Welp, we’ve got all kinds in the orchard. It takes all kinds of apples to do all kinds of things, yannow?”
“That’s good to hear” Margaery smiled, before chuckling, “Well I do now. Honestly, I’d never really thought much about it before” an apple was an apple really.
AJ nodded again. “I know a lot of people don’t think about it. Heck, I don’t think about it when it comes to some of the other fruits and vegetables that I love to eat, too. Like, Potatoes or Tomatoes or Onions. But still, there’s tons of kinds of them, too.”
Margaery nodded, “I guess so” she agreed, “Well then I’ll just have to find more recipes which call for different types of apples so I can try them all” she smiled brightly. Cooking had played a big part in her life in Sweden and she and Loras cooked together a lot when they were younger.
“Sure! I’ve got tons of recipes, too, if you want to sign up for our email list, I can make sure you get some emails with recipes featuring a different kind of apple every week,” AJ suggested, smiling warmly.
“Oh really? That would be wonderful” Margaery nodded, “That’s such a great idea. However did you come up with that?” she asked interestedly.
“Honestly, it came from so many people talking to me about the uses of apples here in my stand. I wanted to compile a big list of recipes that you could use apples in. I’ve got a wealth of information at home, I figured maybe some of my customers might enjoy sharing.” AJ said, giving a little shrug. “I’m glad you like the idea!” She pulled out a clipboard and a pen from behind the register to hand over to her new friend.
“Well I for one think that is brilliant” she replied taking the clipboard from AJ and writing down her details, “And I am sure my brother and friends will be thanking you for sending them too once I start baking” she smiled brightly as she handed back the completed form.
“Why, thank you.” AJ wasn’t always told how smart her ideas were. She wasn’t always praised for her brains. Her loyalty, sure, her friendship, kindness, baking ability? Yeah. But her smarts? Not necessarily. “Hey, I like getting thanks. And you’re welcome to send them my way for apples and recipes!” She beamed, then accepted the clipboard back.
Margaery praised where praise was due and she thought it was a unique and clever idea. After all who better to ask if you were unsure about something in a recipe than the person who sent it to you and while you were there buy the majority of the ingredients too. “Oh I will I promise”
“Great!” AJ said. She was starting to feel like the transaction was finished, and there were other customers filtering in. “Let me know if I can help y’all with anythin’ else, okay?” She gave the woman a friendly smile, then headed off to help the other customers.
