Margaery was in the public library hunting for a book she needed to write her latest law paper. Well she didn’t need it but if she could find it and use it then it would look really good that she knew about it in the first place. And Margaery did like being good at what she did. But it wasn’t where it was supposed to be and the computer had definitely said it hadn’t been taken out. She sighed softly in frustration.
Even though she’d switched majors, Hermione was still friends with a lot of the pre-law students she’d known last year. Hermione was in the library today, having a study session with some of her old friends. She was working on physics, them law. Some kind of law or another. But it’d just broken up, and Hermione was returning books to their proper shelves that the whole group had used. She stepped past the frustrated girl and slipped a book back onto the shelf.
“Oh” Margaery said in surprise as she looked at the book the girl had just slipped back onto the shelf, “There it is, thank goodness” she smiled, “Are you a law student as well?” she asked as she pulled the book from the shelf.
“Oh, sorry! I’d no idea you were looking for this one.” Hermione said, giving a smile. “No, but I was last year. Just switched majors. My friends and I were studying together.”
"Oh it is fine, you were not to know" Margaery smiled, "Really? Why did you swap? If you don't mind my asking"
“Mostly because of my husband. I know that sounds strange. I was really excited about law, I really thought that I could make a difference in the world. But then I started dating Jim, and I heard about his amazing stories… he orchestrated a trip to the moon a year ago. Perhaps you heard of it? Well, he’s got his sights set on Mars next, and I want to go along--and not just as a trophy wife. That means I need to know about Space Physics. Hence, new major.”
“Wow, that is a very different major” Margaery commented, “But sometimes things happen which make you realise your life should maybe go a different way to what you believed” she smiled.
“Very different.” Hermione nodded. “Absolutely. I’m sure that’s what happened with me. This wasn’t my original plan, but it’s certainly a good one.”
“Sometimes it is good to stray from a plan, even if it is hard to do so in the beginning” Margaery nodded, “When planning my life I did not imagine being in the USA to study but here I am and I would not change it now”
“Well, welcome.” Hermione said, giving a grin. “My parents moved here when I was about ten. They’re in Australia now, moved there just after I graduated from high school. It was a bit stressful, actually, and I debated going with them, but my home is here.” She said, nodding once.
“My brother lives here and I followed after an argument with my parents so something fortuitous out of something upsetting” she smiled, “I can see how that would be hard, but think of the things you would have missed had you gone with them, like your husband perhaps? As I say things happen for a reason even if we can not see it at the time”
Hermione nodded. “Jim is my silver lining.” She said, getting a dreamy look in her eyes as she talked about her husband. The grin on her face was bright and happy. “It’s true. I wouldn’t have been able to do so many amazing things here if I’d followed them.”
Margaery smiled, it was nice to see someone so happy and obviously so in love. She saw a similar look in her brother and Renly, it made her slightly jealous - though she’d never begrudge them the happiness they had found. “There you are then. Destiny must have a hand in some things”
“I like the sound of that.” Hermione said, nodding happily. “Destiny. I don’t often think of things that way, but it seems about right.” She set one of the other books she’d been carrying back on the shelf. “Well, I should get back to it. Physics seems to be taking a lot more brain power for me than my intro classes in pre-law.”
“I know it’s not a very scientific explanation for things but maybe it doesn’t have to be” Margaery smiled before nodding, “Of course please don’t let me hold you up. It’s been lovely talking to you”
“And you.” Hermione returned the other girl’s smile, then turned to head back over to where her homework was sitting on the table nearby. She collected her things to head out of the library.
