Jane walked through the mall with her coffee in one hand and the other in her pocket. Taking a sip, she headed up to the costume shop where she said she’d meet Darcy.
Darcy was mostly there to find Jane a fun costume. She already had her idea, thanks to Justin. Though she would see if Jane was up to being the same thing as her. “Hey. So.. any ideas? Because I actually had a really good one, if you don’t mind.. body paint.”
“Actually no, not a clue,” Jane replied with a smiled. “But now you’ve mentioned body paint you’ve got me worried,” she told her with a concerned look on her face. “What’s your idea?”
She grinned at Jane a bit. “It’s not bad. I was going to go as Pop Art.. look.” Darcy had to search through her phone, but finally found a good picture to let Jane see. “What do you think?”
“Oh wow,” Jane took hold of the phone. “That’s clever, I like it,” she grinned, handing the phone back. “Where’d you get that idea?”
“This guy named Justin told me about it. He suggested it or whatever. I think it’s pretty cool. Do you want to go as that? He’ll help both of us.” Hopefully. Darcy looked up at Jane.
“You want to go as a set?” Jane looked up at her with a smile. “Wow, I’ve never done matching costumes before,” she grinned.
“Yeah totally. We can think of a theme. Like make it look like we both belong in the same magazine or whatever.” It was a challenge but at least it was unique. “So you’re in?”
“Darcy, I’m an artist as well as a physicist , I am so in!” Jane grinned. “So we need to find some kind of Pop Arty clothes then I guess?”
“Awesome. Yes we need to find some pop arty clothes. I don’t know what that is exactly, but we’ll figure it out. Maybe think crazy like 80s stuff.” She shrugged some and then started looking through all the costumes. “Oh maybe more like 50s stuff. Right? Pearl necklaces and shit. And I don’t mean the sex kind.”
“Do I even want to know why your mind went straight to making that dirty?” Jane laughed, they started walking again, and Jane’s mind was ticking ideas over, trying to remember what Pop Art she could. “Oh! I know! Pop Art can be made up of dots, right, so what we need are polka dot dresses and stuff. We can draw the dots on our tights or legs after that and maybe different coloured wigs like that famous painting...umm, who is it…” she wondered, clicking her fingers as she thought. “Marilyn Monroe! What do you think?”
Darcy looked positively affronted. Well you know, if she wasn’t smirking so much. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. As if I would ever think things that were dirty.” Right because her halo was being held up with two tiny little horns. “Right. Oh yeah that makes sense. Oh that’s a good idea. We should definitely do it like Marilyn Monroe. And get bright wigs. It’ll be fantastic. Come on.” She dragged Jane over to the wig section.
“Oh yes, heaven forbid anything dirty would spill past your lips!” Jane laughed, letting Darcy pull her over to the wig section. “Should we go as like, inverted colours of each other? Like the Marilyn Monroe picture?” she asked, picking up a bright yellow wig which looked like the colour Lady Gaga used in her Telephone video.
She tried her best to look completely innocent for about a second longer before she started to laugh. “Oh that’s a really good idea. I like it.” Darcy started going through the wigs as well, trying to look for an orange or maybe blue one. One that would contrast against Jane’s. “That’s really good, I like that one.”
“What do you think? Would I make a good blonde?” Jane asked, holding the wig up to her face and pulling a pouty pose like from the film Zoolander.
“Yeah you could totally pull that off.” Darcy laughed a little at Jane’s expression, and then went to find a good wig for herself. She fiddled with some short ones, and then some long ones until she found the perfect one. “What do you think of this? Can I go blue? Or do I look like a smurf?”
“Aww you’d make such a cute smurf!” Jane laughed. “Blue is totally your colour!” she said, reaching out to twiddle some of the ends of her wig. “So do we need like face paints and stuff?”
She nudged her playfully and shook her head. “No! I’m not going to be a smurf. Hmph. But I’ll totally get this one.” Putting her wig in the cart, Darcy nodded a bit. “Justin says that regular makeup is for the best. So we’ll get some of that. We can look for costumes while we’re getting the makeup.”
“Cool, lead the way!” Jane told her, throwing her wig in the cart too. “And who is this Justin?” she asked, following Darcy as they moved through the shop.
“He’s a guy that I met the first time I was trying to find a costume. Just looking for Halloween stuff. Picking out scary shit to decorate our apartment with. And he was there. He gave me the idea.” She went up to pay for the stuff that they’d gotten so that they could go into another store and find the makeup.
“Ooo! Scary stuff? Reckon we’ll get some trick or treaters then?” Jane asked as Darcy paid. “We never really had any out in the sticks on the farm,” Jane shrugged as if it explained her excitement at the idea.
“We might! I put out some decorations just in case. And I got candy. I’ve never given out candy to kids before. It’ll be fun.” She beamed back at Jane as they went into the other store and got some make up. “Do you want to go to a party?”
