Padmé wouldn't be able to spend time with Anakin that evening since she had to go to the Stark Halloween Party with Chuck. It would be a lot of fun, but even now she couldn’t help but think about how badly she felt after the run-in with Obi-Wan at her apartment. A lot of things had come out and she knew Anakin was still brooding over most of it. They hadn’t seen each other since Thursday and she had thought long and hard about how she should approach this and get them talking. She woke up fairly early on Saturday and decided that she would make him breakfast and hopefully worm back into his good graces by using his stomach.
She had stopped by the store and picked up a ton of ingredients for an amazing breakfast and then headed over to his place. He had left her a key when she slept in one of the times she was over there and she had forgotten to give it back to him. So, she let herself into his place and proceeded to start cooking. There was bacon, eggs, hash browns, pancakes, waffles, fruit, and juice and she was quietly singing under her breath as she fixed the tie on her apron and continued to cook.
Anakin had never considered himself a heavy sleeper, in fact he’d battled insomnia and bad dreams most of his life, so how he had slept through Padme’s arrival he wasn’t completely sure. It might have had something to do with the dreams he had lately interrupting his sleep and apparently he was making up for the less than restful nights now because he didn’t react to the woman in his house until the smells coming from the kitchen reached his nose and his stomach decided it was time to get up.
He slipped the harness and his arm back on fairly quickly and easily, following that with a faded, gray, long-sleeved henley. Even with his long sleep pants he had found it cold out of his bed, perhaps he was still partly asleep as keeping warm seemed a higher priority than the fact that someone was in his house. But eventually he did head that way, bare feet on the floor announcing him to her before he showed himself. He certainly looked still asleep, his hair was ruffled, his eyes when he wasn’t rubbing them looked tired and he took a very large yawn before he was able to speak, his voice still low and rough, “Padme?”
When he spoke her name she couldn’t help the goosebumps that appeared on her arms. It was an interesting way to hear it and she kind of liked it. She turned around, her up and out of her face, and wearing an apron while stirring a bowl of batter in her arms. A bright and cheerful smile appeared on her face as she took in his rumpled appearance and it was absolutely adorable. At least she knew that he would eventually wake up by the smell of food if she ever got desperate to get him awake some day in the future. “Hey,” she answered simply as she moved to set the bowl of batter on the counter and stepped towards him.
“Hey.” she might have liked the low rumbling but it wasn’t as pleasant for him so when he reached out for her he cleared his throat. There were other times his voice got low for her, she would have to wait for those as he was starting to wake up more and more. When she was in his arms he kissed her in greeting and as always was reluctant to let her go. He did glance at his kitchen for a moment then back down to her, asking a question though it came out as a statement. “You’re making breakfast.”
The kiss was returned as she relaxed in his arms and chuckled at his comment. Yes, she was definitely making breakfast and it was almost all done. She turned the smile upwards as she reached a hand to his hair and tried to fix it, but mostly she just enjoyed running her fingers through his hair. “Yes. I felt bad about Thursday so, I was hoping I could make you breakfast and we can move on from that awkward drama that happened,” it was an easy explanation and she knew he was constantly hungry so food was the best way to get him to not be broody and upset with her, “There’s a lot of food.”
He gave her his best sweet, slightly sleepy smile. “You’re amazing. You’re welcome to sneak into my place any time you want, especially if you bring food.” he could definitely tell that she had brought food with her as he knew he was never that well stocked for breakfast. He was thrilled every time she cooked for him, and when it was a surprise it was even better. He would have to find a way to repay her later. He brought a hand up to cup her cheek, gently caressing her with his thumb, “Believe me, everything awkward about the other day wasn’t your fault. More about me and Obi-wan, stuff he hasn’t told me and that I haven’t seen yet.”
When his thumb caressed her skin she closed her eyes briefly as she leaned her cheek into the touch. She opened her eyes again and stared up into his before pursing her lips together in thought, “It’s not all his fault. He’s seen more than we have and I can understand if he wants to try and protect me when I barely knew anything about you. I shouldn’t have kept that from you, but it really wasn’t that big of a deal. I tried to ignore you for a few days, but I liked spending time with you more than I liked listening to Obi-Wan. And I’m glad I could make you happy with breakfast. You really need to go grocery shopping.”
“I know it’s not his fault.” he said quickly. “I’m not blaming him, but his reaction to me, the fact that he told you to be careful with me or whatever it was that he said, it got me thinking about things I shouldn’t. Torturing myself by trying to see the future, or whatever it was he said, but he’s going to help me. I guess it doesn’t stop me from being worried about what this kid does but Obi-wan says it will help.” that was what he told himself at least, though he was still worried about just why the older Jedi would tell her to be wary of him. “And you’re what makes me happy, breakfast is just a bonus.”
“Don’t try and see the future. He’s right about not torturing yourself and I’m glad he’s willing to help you out with it. I don’t think you’d be able to really see the future since it’s a different life than what you’re living. But I don’t want to talk about that anymore. I want to have breakfast with you,” she commented to him as she leaned up and kissed his chin before stepping out of his arms to go back to the batter on the counter. She finished whipping it up before putting it on the griddle she found and started to make the pancakes, “Don’t get spoiled over this because it will not happen all the time.”
“Only when I pout and look all sullen, right? Well I’m in luck because I happen to be very, very good at brooding when I have to be.” he let her go without a fight knowing that she would eventually be headed back and this time would be bringing pancakes with her. He set to clearing what was left of his junk on the table and then to setting it for the two of them. Once again he was struck with how tiny and undeserving of her his place was, not that he was expecting her to move in, but there was a very large part of him that felt a little ashamed that his life was not better, that his way of living wasn’t up to what it should have been if he was going to be with her. He felt she deserved the best and he couldn’t help but feel that his life was far from it. “I could get spoiled so easily,” he said to her, trying to get over his little bout of inadequacy. “Best beat me after.”
“There is no brooding allowed when you are around me,” She reprimanded him as she turned her head to playfully stick her tongue out at him before she finished the first couple pancakes and put them on a plate. She poured a few more and while they cooked she brought over the bacon and eggs she had finished up earlier, then went back for cut fruit and some juice, “And I am not going to beat you after, really? No. Do you want some coffee or anything?” She waited for his answer as she went over to check on the pancakes.
“Coffee would be fantastic.” he said as he ran a hand over his hair, trying to flatten it as he could still feel it standing straight up. He was half tempted to just gel it like that and leave it, though he was the first to say how silly he would look with spikey hair. He quickly slipped in to grab utensils then back out, doing his best to stay out of her way while she finished. He finally did sit down and of course took to opportunity to watch her as she worked.
She poured a mug of coffee for him and brought it over to him along with a stack of pancakes. She had a lot of coffee while she was cooking so she poured herself a glass of juice and took a seat across from him. It smelled absolutely fantastic and she was so happy she was able to put a meal like this together. It was also nice to do something for Anakin for once and she knew he truly appreciated the food. “Let me know what you think,” the pancakes were chocolate chip and she hoped that he didn’t mind that. She found plain pancakes to be too boring and who couldn’t resist a bit of chocolate in their morning?
Anakin certainly couldn’t as he had quite the sweet tooth as she likely knew already if she had a look inside his pantry. Lots of candy, chocolates, chocolate bread, pastries, Nutella, that with the pizza rolls in his fridge and his chocolate hazelnut coffee, one would have been surprised how in-shape Anakin was. He wasn’t kind to his body, hadn’t been even before he lost his arm, but for the most part he seemed healthy. He was lucky, he was still young and could withstand whatever his diet threw at him, but he knew it wouldn’t last forever. He gave her a smile after a rather large bite, “So good.”
“Awesome,” she smiled back at him and dug in. She could probably match him somewhat for amount of food, but she usually ended a little early. She liked to eat and she had no issue with not eating enough. The food was fantastic and she couldn’t help but be a little smug at how good her cooking skills were. She chewed on a couple strips of bacon and washed it down with some juice, “I’m glad you like it. This can be our start over breakfast and we won’t talk about Obi-Wan for a week or something.”
“No, it’s okay, Obi-wan shouldn’t be taboo, he’s a good man.” if nothing else he had wanted to protect Padme and Anakin could appreciate that. The way he was starting to feel for her, he wanted her safe as well. He only hoped he would be able to keep his promise to the man. “And we really don’t need to start over, I like where we are, I just need to stop worrying about things. It was my fault, but I’m trying to do better.” he took a deep drink of his coffee. “Food helps, especially when you make it. Damn, I’m going to feel all neglected on those nights I have to do for myself.”
“You really need to learn to make your own food that isn’t putting pizza rolls in the oven. Cooking is pretty easy, it’s just reading skills and repetition,” she pointed out to him as she acknowledged mentally the rest of what he said. She was happy that he didn’t mind Obi-Wan and the majority of what happened seemed to be in the past now. They could take this information and move onto the next part of their lives, “And no, that doesn’t mean we get to spend more time together while I give you cooking lessons. We do have lives to lead.”
He made a face and pressed his left hand over his chest, doing his best to look as if he had been seriously wounded. “Oh ow, yeah, ow. That hurts, Padme, that really hurts. How can you be so beautiful and so cruel at the same time? It just isn’t right.” he was teasing of course even if he did want to spend every moment he could with her, after all they were still in that new phase where she was perfect and every little thing she did, and was interested in, was marvelous. But he understood, as much as he wanted to be with her he didn’t want to suffocate her either. “Fine then,” he said after another mouth full. “No cooking lessons for Anakin.”
“You’re always saying I am beautiful and cruel, yet you stick around anyway. You’re either a masochist or just stupid,” she answered him with a playful smile. Apparently the sex must be amazing as well if he stuck around while she was so horribly mean to him. And she didn’t want to spend a lot of time with him because she was sure that he would get sick of him at some point and she was just learning to really enjoy him, “I can buy you cooking lessons for Christmas or something.”
“A little from column A, a little from column B.” he smiled. She, and maybe now Obi-wan, where some of the few he felt comfortable enough to be self-effacing with. It was a nice change from letting his real and imagined inadequacies drive him to constantly try to prove himself. “Okay, maybe a lot from column B, but I’m happy and that’s the important thing right?” he looked thoughtful for a moment. “Only if it doesn’t mean you’ll stop cooking for us.”
“I do like that you’re happy and it is important. And I’m surprised you said cooking for us instead of me, which pleases me a little. But this way you can surprise me sometime with a home cooked meal that you made yourself and I’ll be so happy,” she loved it when men cooked for her. There was something sexy about a guy that knew his way around a kitchen and could make an amazing meal. It was also obviously romantic when they made a surprise meal for her and she kind of wanted to see Anakin do something like that.
“Good, it took a lot of self-control to say us instead of me.” he lightly teased. He had originally intended to say ‘me’, but as he was speaking he had realized it wasn’t accurate, after all they both ate what she cooked. And he knew better than to think that he was in some way above her. In fact it usually felt quite the opposite, though he generally tended to think it was because she was older, more mature, and altogether more together than he was. “Shit, I ought to go write that down for future reference.”
“Yes, you probably should. I have no issue putting post-its around your place to remind you to some day make a meal for me,” she grinned before taking another bite of her bacon. Yeah, this breakfast had been a good idea and it got him to talk to her more instead of slumping off to brood by himself like he had on Thursday. She just wished that she could talk to Obi-Wan and get that sorted out as well. It was incredibly awkward that it had come out like that, but she wasn’t going to regret it because she was secretly enjoying whatever was happening with Anakin.
Not so secretly, Anakin liked to think. She seemed pretty pleased with how things were between them and he got the impression that she was the sort of woman who would speak up if she didn’t enjoy spending time with him. He fully intended to keep his promise not to hurt her and if Obi-wan still didn’t like it, well, he could go hang for all he cared. His priorities were his and Padme’s happiness. “Oh god, I’m going to come home one day to a house completely covered in post-it notes.”
“You might. I’ve got nothing better to do with my time on the weekends. Although tonight I’ve got a Halloween party, so at least that’s something. I’ve been debating if I want to go out to a Haunted House or something haunted related for Halloween. Do you have any plans? I believe it’s on a Thursday, which is kind of lame,” Halloween wasn’t her favorite of holidays, but she liked to have fun. Being scared could be a lot of fun and it had been so long since she had gone out. And dressing up in a slutty costume didn’t sound like a lot of fun.
“Not really, the guys at work are more LAN party types than normal party types so no one has really planned anything, and they’re pretty much it for people I know around here so I’ve not been invited anywhere else. I’ll probably just end up watching scary movies and overdosing on candy since I know I have to work that Friday.” He loved Halloween, mainly because of the candy and the horror movies. Lately he had enjoyed it even more as women’s costumes had become more and more ‘sassy’ which he had to admit sounded better than just ‘skimpy’.
“I forgot how nerdy you are until you say things like LAN party,” she admitted to him with a wrinkle of her nose. She was either too old or too normal to get into computer things like that. It wasn’t often that she realized how different she and Anakin were, but sometimes she wondered what in the world made them so attracted to one another. They didn’t have ton of shared interests. But when he mentioned scary movies and candy she chuckled, “Let me know if you need company. Maybe next weekend we can find a haunted house on Friday and you can pretend to protect me from the scary things.”
“I’m an engineer,” he pointed out. “I’m essentially a professional nerd. But I’m not as bad as they are, I can at least claim that I was once a fighter pilot and the most handsome boy in school. I’m not a bad catch, all-in-all.” there was more he could have mentioned, things he had done since losing his arm to prove that he was still the man he used to me, but Padme was clever enough to have seen that for what it was. He prefered not seeming so pathetic in her eyes. “Ha, pretend, sure. But they both sound like fun, and I assure you my screams of terror are in no way girly.”
“I’m essentially going to be a be a professional bitch when I grow up, so I guess we both have weird jobs,” she smirked as she sipped from her glass of juice. Lawyers were still seen as scum of the earth types sometimes and she honestly didn’t mind. She knew it took a keen mind to be a lawyer and she respected them quite a bit. And if he had tried to prove how manly he was to her she probably would have rolled her eyes and told him to calm down, “Well, I can normally take care of myself, but I would offer you the chance to get your manly man fill for the evening. And I can’t wait to hear your screams of terror.”
“They are so manly that your panties will magically disappear, I know, it’s happened before.” of course he had to take it another step too far. “Which is probably why I try not to become frightened when I am near retirement homes.” he fully expected a look and perhaps a smack over that but it made him smile so it had been worth it. “Think of me as the fella you shoot in the leg and leave for the zombies so you can escape. The nice thing is that I’m tall so their eating me will distract them for a while.”
“Oh god,” she did what he expected and rolled her eyes, but reached out to kick him playfully under the table, “You’re so weird. And why would I shoot you in the leg and leave you? You’re tall so I need you to boost me up in trees and such. You’re almost useful when you stop to think about it and if I was going to leave anyone behind with the zombies it would be an extremely overweight person because that will keep them eating longer.”
“So clearly what you have to do is fatten me up first, I am completely okay with this. Five or six dozen more pancakes ought to do it, right? I’ve got bags of candy somewhere around here to sprinkle on them.” he continued to tease, reaching under the table to rub his leg where she lightly kicked him. “Well, wait, no. I’d have to have my arm made bigger and I’d have to give up my more active hobbies, and apparently having sex while you’re out of shape can be unpleasant in certain positions. Never mind, I like the ladder idea better.”
“You are so strange,” she muttered while she shook her head as she got up to bring her dishes to the sink. She picked up her stuff and went into the kitchen to clean them off. She set them in the sink and moved back towards him to get his plates. When she reached him she kissed his cheek as she made a move to grab his plate, “did you want anything else?”
She was closest to his right side so when he lifted a hand to put on her waist it was his artificial one and it was more to keep her from moving away just yet. He placed a quick kiss on her lips in return for the one on his cheek then gave her a smile. “There are a lot of things I want, but I think you’ve managed to fill me up,” he kissed her again, light and quick as before. “Thank you again for all this. It was wonderful, all of it. Just what I needed.”
The artificial arm didn’t make a difference to her at all; it was just a part of him. She grinned at the kiss before returning the next one a little more properly. It was nice to be praised and thanked and she was happy to please him and take his mind off everything that happened the other night, “Ha de ha. Well, I’m glad that you enjoyed it so much. There’s some leftovers so you won’t go hungry tomorrow.”
“So good to me.” he said with a smile, eyes almost wistfully following after her once he let her go. He was a lucky man, probably luckier than he realized. He hadn’t understood the impulse to settle down before, but sitting there, watching her and spending time with her it all started to make sense. Maybe it was too soon, but he could see himself living very happily like this, with her always there. It would be a very comfortable and happy life. Maybe, one day down the line he would actually share the thought with her.
