Zuko had been so busy with his first semester of college and managing Draco’s music stuff that he’d hardly had any time at all for much else. Days off? What were those? It was sort of funny, considering before this he’d had all of his time free basically always.
He never had been good at making little changes in life -- Zuko was better at huge world altering changes. Still, he’d found time off and was now hanging out with Pansy… at the mall. So it wasn’t quite like freedom, but he supposed even he had to suck it up and buy some new jeans every now and again.
Pansy hated shopping. The only time she’d go was if she had someone else to either drag along or drag her along. She always got side-tracked into places like Hot Topic, the Food Court, and the Video Game Arcade. Today was no exception; she’d already wandered into Hot Topic and purchased a new, awesome belt.
Now they were wandering by that Hot-Dog-On-A-Stick place, and Pansy was distracted by the lemonade. “Ooh, lemonade! Lemonade lemonade! You want some? I’m buying.”
"If you're buying, I can't say no." Zuko said, distantly amused at how easily she could become distracted. But he didn't really mind, seeing as he'd bought a sweatshirt at hot topic (it was hard to find all black hoodies that didn't look stupid anywhere else, surprisingly) and actually liked lemonade.
“Well, you could. It’d just make you a major league douchebag.” Pansy teased, giving him a grin. It was nice to be out and having fun. She’d spent too much time cooped up on people’s sofas and drinking while playing Mario Kart. Even though the mall was indoors, it still felt like a breath of fresh air.
They got into the line and Pansy was staring at the stupid hats that the Hot-Dog-On-A-Stick employees had to wear. She didn’t notice when it was their turn to order.
“At least I’ve have gotten in the major leagues,” Zuko murmured, amused. He did notice when it was their turn to order, but instead of being polite enough to just do it for the both of them, he just gave Pansy an elbow to the side to get her attention. He was a pretty decent brother in law like that.
Pansy took a couple of steps forward, stumbling a bit, and went slightly pink when she realized that he’d had to nudge her to get her attention. She chuckled as she stepped up to the counter, ordered two lemonades, and then paid for them with one of her fantastic gift cards left over from last year’s Christmas Wish. She accepted the drinks and passed one over to Zuko before turning to head back the way they were going. “So. Where next?”
Zuko took the lemonade with a little nod of thanks, sticking a straw into the lid of the cup before making a little hmmph noise. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “Wherever you want to go?” Again: fantastic brother in law.
“I have no more plans. Already spent more than I was planning.” Pansy said, moving with him out of the food court and back into the mall proper. “Oh! Do they have one of those play places here? Where the kids go? I want to go down the slide.” It was ridiculous how excited she got over really stupid ideas.
Zuko frowned, but dutifully looked around for whatever it was she was talking about. “They have… Lego land? Or those machines you put quarters in and pretend you’re really driving…?”
“Damn. Maybe we’ll have to go find a playground somewhere. There’s like, a school nearby, or something.” Pansy said, frowning a bit. “I don’t want to put quarters into a machine.”
“I guess we could find a park,” Zuko said, sounding a bit quizzical over it, but then shrugging. Whatever, it was a good way to spend a day he supposed. He sipped his lemonade and made for the exit of the mall.
“Dude. Live a little.” Pansy said, then nudged her elbow into the back of his in a playful way. The two headed out of the mall together. “I think there’s one not far from here. We can hoof it.” The parking lot wasn’t really full, so they could cut straight across. And then they started down the sidewalk, heading north away from the mall.
“I live all the time,” Zuko said, giving her a face and then shrugging He was glad he’d opted to put his new purchase on rather than carry a bag around.
The playground wasn’t that far away and was blessedly absent of children, so Zuko parked himself in a swing the first chance he got. “So. You’re doing okay, right?”
Pansy took the swing next to his, and moved slowly backward and forward. She wasn’t quite swinging, but not sitting still, either. After a long moment of contemplation, she nodded. “I think so. New apartment, good job, good brothers.” She swung sideways to bump her hip into his.
“Well, I don’t know about Draco,” Zuko said fondly, smiling despite himself. “But I try.” It was good to know she was doing alright though -- Zuko had never really been in a relationship before Draco, and he couldn’t imagine how it would feel for things to turn south like that, and to be left. Zuko still had half a mind to search that guy out and light him on fire properly.
Pansy really just wanted to shut the door. The hurt was too much for her to try for revenge. She felt--the worst part about it all was how it made her feel like she wasn’t worthy. She wasn’t good enough, she couldn’t keep his attention properly. That was the worst part. Logically, she knew she still had people around who cared about her. But irrationally? She felt like garbage. Like she’d been used and donated, and would spend the rest of her life on a hanger on the rack at the Goodwill, because no one wanted her.
“You’re far better than Draco.” She said, reaching her hand over to ruffle his hair.
She’d get over it eventually; everyone did. It might just take time and some good support. Which was why Zuko was sitting out here on a park swing instead of doing his homework or forcing Draco to actually do something productive with his day.
“Yes,” he said, amused. “That’s probably true.”
Pansy laughed. “Don’t agree too quickly, there.” She said, then swung sideways and bumped her hip into his again.
Zuko laughed too, shrugging a little. “I was kidding anyway.” He bumped her back, swinging sideways a little before crossing his legs at the ankle and evening out again. “Don’t tell him I said so.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Pansy said, grinning wickedly. Though, now they were on the swings, she was starting to get bored. That’s the way the brunette rolled, actually, once she had what she was working for, she grew bored of it. “C’mon, let’s go home and play drunken Mario Kart.”
Zuko snorted a little, always amused at how easily she changed her mind about things -- but stood anyway, and nodded in agreement. “Let’s.”
