To Martha it felt like it had been weeks since the last time she’d seen Jack and technically it had been. They hadn’t hung out in sometime, but she had dreamt about him fairly recently. The problem was, both of them were rather busy with their respective jobs, so it was understandable that they hadn’t seen much of each other. But now, they both happened to be off at the same time, so Martha had insisted that they meet up at a bar in Garden Grove, near her apartment. It was the same one her and Molly had gone to the night they’d seen Mickey, just after the first time Mickey had come into the ER. Martha was looking forward to seeing Jack and talking about all the recent dreams she’d had; most importantly her working for Torchwood and her gossip session about Jack with Ianto in the dream.
As she reached the bar, she sent Jack a text to let him know she’s arrived and waited out front in case he wasn’t there just yet.
Jack blinked when his mobile vibrated and he read the text message. He wandered outside, broke into a huge grin, and pulled Martha into a hug. “About time you showed up, Nightingale,” he teased. He gave her a kiss on the cheek and smiled, opening the door for her. “Don’t worry, I haven’t been here too long. I only arrived about ten minutes ago. It’s nice that we’re finally getting some time to catch up in person instead of emails, texts, and on the network.”
Upon seeing Jack come out of the bar, Martha broke into a wide grin and she hugged him back. It felt like forever since she’d seen her friend, but at the same time she’d only just seen him in her dreams. It really was quite surreal sometimes. “It’s so good to see you too, Jack.” She was still smiling when they parted and she followed him into the building, “If I’d known I was keeping you waiting then I would have left earlier.” She teased back as they headed towards the bar so she could get a drink, “Have you gotten a drink yet?”
“Nope, not yet. I was waiting for you to get here. And don’t worry about it, Martha. You’re always worth the wait.” Jack led her over to one of the tables near the corner so they could talk quietly without having to worry about people overhearing them. All of the people on Valarnet might be having the dreams, but it didn’t mean that everyone in California was. The last thing they needed was anyone thinking they were crazy. He signaled to one of the waitresses as he sat down. “So besides work, what’s been going on with you lately?”
Martha followed Jack to the table and sat down as the waitress came over. She ordered a drink and waited for Jack to order his before answering his question, “The usual. Working, dreaming and spending any free time with Mickey.” She couldn’t help but smile as she said his name, happy that they were finally officially dating instead of just going on date. Now Martha could officially call Mickey her boyfriend. “And what about you?”
Jack smirked and leaned back in his seat as he watched her. “Awwww… looks like someone’s really smitten with Mickey Mouse,” he teased. “Seriously though? Congrats. I’m really glad that you’re both happy. And maybe it’s just me, but it makes perfect sense that two former Companions would end up with each other.”
Martha’s eyes narrowed and she glared at Jack playfully, “I suppose it does. And what about you and Ianto, huh? Did you know when you guys got together that you were together in the dreams or did you have those after?” It had been a nice surprise to find out that Ianto was also a part of Team TARDIS or should it be Team Torchwood for the three of them? “It’s too bad Tosh and Owen aren’t around. Owen was pretty cool,” She smirked, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes as she recalled the memory of him getting shot.
“Ianto and I… when I first met him at work, I hadn’t dreamed about him yet. But when I asked him out? Yeah… I knew exactly who he was in my dreams. What I didn’t know was what he becomes in them.” Jack shrugged his shoulders and smiled. But as Martha talked about Owen and Tosh, Jack’s smiled faded and he nodded quietly. “Yeah… I miss them a lot. Gwen too… it’s been ages since I last saw her and I think she might’ve moved and left California.”
Martha listened, her hand cupping her chin as she rested her elbow on the table, “So, did you ask him out because of the dreams or did you like him before you dreamt about it?” Martha knew that Mickey also dreamt of The Doctor and Jack, but still had no idea that eventually their paths would cross in the dreams. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they’re out there somewhere and will eventually find their way here.”
“I don’t know… a little of both? He’s cute, has a sharp sense of humor, and he looks good in a suit.” Jack shrugged again and handed a menu to Martha, the opened one for himself. “I flirted with him for a while before I started having dreams that involved him, but I pretty much flirt with everyone. I guess I was sort of trying to feel him out first to see if he might be interested. As for the others, yeah… me too.” Jack wasn’t holding his breath though. In his dreams, both Tosh and Owen were dead. So he highly doubted that they’d be showing up any time soon.
“I have to agree, he does look good in a suit.” Martha had enjoyed getting to know Ianto in her dream, during her time in Torchwood and seeing him in a different setting. She took the menu from Jack and opened it then began scanning it, “So, do you wish Torchwood was real or are you content with your real life job?” Sometimes Martha wished that The Doctor really had a TARDIS and that they could go on random adventures.
“Real,” he replied without hesitation. “I don’t know… I was talking to someone else online about this once before. But as weird as it sounds? Sometimes the dreams feel more real to me than this life does. Especially when stuff from the dreams happens here. Like those people who have super powers and stuff. Don’t get me wrong… I like my job. But really? No contest. I’d much rather be running Torchwood or travelling with the Doctor,” he replied.
“I know exactly what you mean.” Martha was so glad that Jack completely understood exactly what she had been thinking, “I love my job too. I love helping people, but if I ever got the chance to travel with The Doctor, I’d jump at it. I mean, who wouldn’t want to travel through space and time and see new things almost everyday?” She’d be honest, she hoped that her dreams weren’t finished and that there were a few more adventures coming up.
“Exactly! The Doctor and I might’ve had some issues about me being a fixed point, but it doesn’t change the fact that I’d always help him out if he needed it.” Jack pushed up the sleeve of his sweatshirt and showed Martha the wrist strap he was wearing. “If I could get this thing working like in the dreams so it could teleport? Think of all the fun we could have with it!”
Martha smirked, “Some issues?” She teased, watching as Jack showed off the wrist strap, “Now that would be pretty awesome. I wonder why it doesn’t work here.” She knew that other people had gotten crazier things than teleporting wrist straps and those worked just fine in the waking world.
Jack sighed and rolled his eyes. “He said I was ‘wrong’. At any rate, I think it won’t teleport because of what happened in the dreams. In my dreams, the Doctor disables that feature every time I manage to get it working again.”
“You are not wrong, Jack. You’re unique.” As far as Martha what concerned, whatever The Doctor thought about Jack, he was the one that was wrong. Jack might have been a fixed point and unable to die, but that didn’t make him wrong. He hadn’t asked for it. “That’s not fair. You don’t go messing around with The TARDIS.”
“Yeah, I know. But I think he feels responsible for his Companions and sometimes goes a little overboard with trying to keep us out of trouble. I mean, think about it. You left, so he puts in a good word with UNIT to get you a job. And we both know that UNIT’s no stranger to getting into trouble! With me, he doesn’t want me teleporting around. But it’s not like I can’t find another way to get to where I need to be. Right?” Jack smirked and set his menu aside. “As for the TARDIS… well, it’s not like I couldn’t fly her if I had ever needed to. And I helped him out with repairs plenty of times during his previous regeneration.”
What Jack was saying actually made perfect sense. "That's a good way to look at it actually. Watching out for us even when we're not with him any more." It was actually a comforting thought. "So, you knew two of his regenerations?" Martha had only known the one, but Jack, Rose and Mickey had all known The Doctor during two of his regenerations.
“Yeah… the spikey haired, brown coat wearing one that you travelled with, and his previous one. That one had big ears, close cropped hair, and wore black leather. Kind of hot,” he joked. He paused for a moment and placed his order when the waitress came back over and then waited for Martha to do the same. “He flirted more too. Well, with me. Both of them were head over heels for Rose though.”
Martha placed her own order then nodded in response to Jack, “Yeah, that was pretty obvious. It’s why I left. I could have fallen in love with him, but it was obvious that he was never going to see me that way.” Dream!Martha had been smart like that; getting out before she got in too deep. “Me and you were in the same boat there, huh?”
“Yup.” He grinned and leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. “See? You should’ve come with me and joined up with Torchwood earlier. Forget UNIT, help me keep the team on their toes, and then we could’ve flirted with each other as much as we wanted.”
“Yes, but you had Ianto to flirt with.” Martha grinned, thinking about her time at Torchwood. “And you have Ianto to flirt with here too. And I have Mickey.” They both had someone, which made things that much better.
“So? Who says that I’m only allowed to flirt with one person that I care about? Besides… at the time, you weren’t with Mickey. And I wasn’t with Ianto. That didn’t happen until later for either of us until after we’d both left the Doctor. And for you, it wasn’t even until after you went through your Tom phase,” Jack reminded her.
As Jack spoke, Martha’s grin started to falter and her brow furrowed until he stopped talking and her eyes widened slightly, “Wait, what? Mickey and I? In the dreams?” She’d had no idea that they ever met in the dreams; neither of them had dreamt about that and no one else had mentioned it. She wondered if The Doctor knew too. She knew about the engagement to Tom and now was curious as what had caused it to be called off.
“And you must not’ve had those dreams yet… damn,” Jack said, frowning when he noticed the look of confusion on Martha’s face. “Sorry! It’s after your stint with helping me out at Torchwood. Okay… short version that’s mostly spoiler free? A whole bunch of us former Companions all end up helping out the Doctor… together at the same time. So it gives people who haven’t met each other yet a chance to finally meet the other Children of Time.”
Martha still couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing. Was that why she’d been attracted to Mickey? Was it just fate? “Really? That’s...that’s crazy. But I guess it’s just like you and Ianto here.” The question now was, did she tell Mickey or wait and let him dream about it first? Who knew how long that would be. “Whatever it was though must have been pretty big if he needed all of us.”
Jack smiled and nodded, placing a finger to his lips. “Yup… but I’m not telling you anything else about it. You’ll find out soon enough, Nightingale. Me and Ianto though… it’s complicated. I asked him out because I knew who he was from the dreams. Would I have asked him out otherwise? I honestly don’t know. But at this point, I don’t really care. Things are what they are. And so far, things are pretty good.”
“I see how it is. Spill the beans then clam up.” Martha smirked. She knew that eventually she’d find out what happened, so it wasn’t too big a deal that Jack wouldn’t say anything else, but she was still extremely curious, “I’m glad that you and Ianto are together though. You’re awfully cute together, after all.”
“If you really want to know, I’ll tell you. It’s just that some people prefer not to have any spoilers.” The waitress returned with their orders and he sipped his drink. “Thanks. I have to admit that it’s going pretty well so far and I do like him a lot. So hopefully it keeps going well.”
Martha shook her head, “No, don’t tell me any more. I want to wait.” She thanked the waitress as she came back with their food then smiled at Jack, “Well, I hope it continues going well for you too. For both of us really.”
Jack grinned and nodded, picking up his mug of coffee in salute. “Cheers to that. With all the insane stuff that’s been happening out here in California, it’s nice to know that at least a few things are normal and going well for us!”
