Momo was pretty excited to have be meeting someone who seemed as into fairy tales and storybooks as much as she was. She had brought some of the better illustrated books in her backpack, and was sitting at one of the tables at Lollicup. She wasn't sure if Myrcella wanted anything to eat, so she held off on that. Instead, she was sipping at a peach tea with lychee jelly in it, which was so so good.
Myrcella was excited too. She loved reading and her fairy tale books were her favourite too. Meeting somebody who shared that interest and was around the same age was exciting. With her own books in her bag Myrcella had caught the bus and gotten off at a stop not far from the cafe. Entering she looked around and smiled when she spotted her new friend, “Hi” she said as she approached, “Momo?”
"Yes, hello! You must be Myrcella," Momo said with a kind smile and a nod of her head in the affirmative. "Pleased to meet you and please sit down? You must be feeling pretty blah after that bus ride. I hope it didn't take too long to get here?"
Momo's own bus ride had included a transfer, so she had to wait on a strange street corner for a good fifteen minutes, hoping there weren't any pedobear types into Asian schoolgirls that were out to get her. (¬_¬”)-c ԅ(≖‿≖ԅ) No bad touch!
“That’s me,” she confirmed nodding, “Pleased to meet you too. Oh thank you.” She sat down with a smile. “It wasn’t too bad. I read for most of it. Was yours okay?” she asked, hoping the other girl hadn’t had too much trouble. Thankfully it wasn’t too different to the UK’s but she’d had Jeremy to help her work it out so now she could use it like a pro. But she didn’t know how much Momo had to use public transport.
"It wasn't too bad," Momo replied, not looking like she had been troubled by the experience. It wasn't as though she had been grabbed at or anything, and so her faith in the goodness of humanity and everything in general was well entact. "It's really exciting to meet someone who seems to like the same sort of stories. A lot of people think it's childish or silly. I think they're missing out! Oh, but before we start gushing?"
A sheepishly smiling Momo held up a plastic cup full of peach colored tea, with translucent white cubes in the bottom of it. It was a hint that maybe they should order. Maybe?
"There's food too," she suggested, in case Myrcella was hungry. "They have really nice popcorn chicken and rice here. The honey milk tea with boba's really nice, but there's lots of flavors to try. They're pretty good at mixing things together."
“It’s true, my older brother used to tease me endlessly” and Myrcella had taken steps to ensure that he couldn’t get at them when she wasn’t around. She wouldn’t put it past him to do something horrid to her collection. “Oh yes, what a good idea. Food would be great actually I haven’t had lunch and that sounds lovely. I’m a complete novice at tea that isn’t hot earl grey” she chuckled, “So I was going to follow your lead on that bit” she admitted with a smile for her new friend.
"Sure, let me go to the counter and order, and I'll be right back!" Momo smiled and got up to go do that. She came back a minute or two later with a honey milk tea with bubble bits in the bottom of the cup, a huge straw, and a tray of popcorn chicken and rice. She put it down and then sat down too.
"There we go. I was going to say, you're so lucky to have a brother. Even if he's a tease! I'm an only child, so it's pretty quiet at home." She laughed sheepishly and took her plate, placing it in front of her. She didn't want to assume since that would be rude, so she asked, "You've got an accent. It's nice. Where are you from?"
“My younger brother, Tommen, is lovely,” Myrcella said after thanking Momo for fetching their food and drinks, “But I wouldn’t wish my older brother, Joffrey, on anybody. He doesn’t tease in a nice or fun way. He’s pretty mean,” she said truthfully.
“Oh thank you. I’m from England, UK,” she said with a smile, “My parents are still there along with my brothers. I’m actually staying with a friend while I finish school out here”
"Joffrey sounds like he's tough to put up with," Momo said, laughing a little so it didn't seem rude to say that. "It's good you have a younger brother who's nicer to make up for it."
Momo took a drink of her tea and afterward was chewing on a bit of the lychee jelly from the bottom of the cup.
"I've only ever been to Japan because my parents have lots of relatives there. I bet England's really nice, like some fairy tale book. With gardens and lots of old brick buildings, and rain that never seems like it will quit...but when it does, and the sun comes out, I bet it's magical."
She blinked a few times and then looked sheepish as she explained, "It probably doesn't rain as much as my mind's eye thinks it does."
“He really is,” Myrcella agreed, she didn’t see it as being rude - it was true after all. Joffrey was a nightmare. “Tommen is great, I just feel bad for him being stuck in England but I talk to him a lot over skype and emails.” It was a shame he hadn’t been able to stay behind too but he’d miss mum far too much to be so far from her.
“A lot of it is really pretty, we do have some incredible buildings and a number of places have been used as inspiration for literature settings. London isn’t as pretty, lots of big ugly buildings but there are pockets of nice areas,” she explained.
,Laughing softly Myrcella shrugged, “Well it does rain quite a lot and it can be very cold. But Spring and Summer tend to be fairly mild. We don’t see nearly as much sun as I’d like to, I really enjoy the weather here. Though the rain does bring clean air and it’s my favorite time to go walking, just after a storm.”
Myrcella tried her own drink then and found it to be rather tasty, “This is good,” she smiled at Momo, “I can see why you like it so much.”
Momo had been listening intently while eating, but nodded her head in the affirmative. This place really was the best.
"It really is. There's so many flavors to try, and they always seem to recommend the best combinations." She laughed and then made a little face, before saying, "I guess London doesn't sound as nice as I thought it would. But the rest of it sounds really pretty...and really rained on! I bet sometimes you might miss the sound of the rain but it's always so sunny and happy here, that it means you can go wherever and not get drenched. The beaches are really nice, too. Have you been there yet?"
“I can definitely see more trips here in the future,” Myrcella grinned, “It’s worth visiting I mean we have some awesome museums in London and there are some other places that are stunning like Cornwall, the Peak District, Lake District. Those places can all be really lovely. I do miss rain sometimes, which I’m sure sounds very crazy.”
Myrcella nodded. “I’ve been to the beach once,” she said, “But I should go more, there are lots to explore I’ve been told”
"Oh no, I don't think that's crazy at all. I think I would miss this place if I was somewhere else," Momo confessed, while picking at her food. "There's tons to explore! If you want, we can go to the beach sometime. I think that would be nice."
She blinked a few times and then smiled sheepishly again. "We haven't even talked about books yet. Ooops."
“I think that would be lovely,” Myrcella said, “It’s always nicer going to the beach with a friend I think.” And especially one who she seemed to be able to talk to very easily.
“We’re proving the ‘girls talk a lot’ stereotype, correct,” she laughed smiling brightly. Myrcella had been worried it might be awkward to meet somebody to talk about fairytales and books but she was so pleased that she and Momo were getting along so well.
"I think so too, but that's what girls are supposed to! So it's entirely acceptable," she said with a cheerful nod. "The beach would be really fun too. I don't get to go as often as I'd like, and my parents are too busy to go. So if I'm there with someone else that's the same age as I am, then they won't worry so much."
Not that they were hugely worried about that. They always seemed more concerned that their daughter didn't socialize enough. As proof of that, Momo looked like she was over the moon, because she was usually that girl who didn't socialize too much, and had her face stuck in a book or was doing homework. This was really great and she would have to thank Toshiro in their advanced English class when she next saw him, for suggesting signing up for the network.
"I'll get one of the books out," she said, after she ate just enough of the popcorn chicken and some rice to feel filled up but not stuffed. After moving some things aside, Momo grabbed her backpack, opening it up and taking out a book that had seen some wear and tear, from frequent reading. The binding was creased from being opened so many times, but the pages weren't bent or torn, so much care had been taken with it. Momo flipped through the book until she came to the story of Momotaro and turned the book on the table so Myrcella could see it better. "Momotaro, the peach boy! He was very brave and fought demons, with the help of a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant. It's a pretty well-known story in Japan."
Myrcella smiled, “Definitely acceptable,” she nodded, “I think my parents will be happy to hear I’m enjoying the beach with a new friend, even if they will be jealous that it’s still beach weather here,” she joked.
Myrcella socialized a fair amount, her mum had never been worried that her daughter had no friends. She was a nice girl who was easy to get along with and she’d managed to fit in quite well at her new school. It would be nice to have someone with a similar interest though, Arya wasn’t hugely into books or beauty so it was fun to find someone who was into at least one of those things.
She moved her own food and drink to the side where she could still reach it but it wouldn’t get in the way of the book. It looked very well loved and it made Myrcella happy to see, books were meant to be read again and again and this one was obviously cared for as well. “I have to admit I’ve not heard of it before,” she said, looking at the beautiful illustrations.
This girl certainly needed some fashion upgrades. She looked like she was wearing clothes for a sixth grader, instead of a twelfth grader. Too cutesy, even if she really liked it.
"Momotaro popped out of a peach to an old childless couple," Momo explained, "and he grew up to be very brave and strong. One day he decided he was going to go stop some oni...umm, demons...that were hurting people. They would take them to be slaves, and steal all of their valuables. So he went on a journey to get them and met a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant, and they formed a little group, and went to the island, and beat them up."
Momo started laughing, trying to explain the rest, "Then they freed everyone and took the loot and went home, the end. There's more to it there, but there's translations on the internet. I just like him because we both have the same thing in our names. Momo means peach."
If she was willing Myrcella would love to take Momo shopping, she missed choosing clothes and finding make up with her friends.
Listening Myrcella smiled as Momo told the story, it sounded very good. With sweetness, action, friendship and fun. The best kind of story with a bit of everything. “I’ll definitely look it up, it sounds great. Maybe I can see if there’s a book with Japanese fairy tales in, I’ve heard one or two but obviously not enough.”
She smiled brightly, “Oh, that’s what your name means. That’s so cool. Did your parents chose it because of the story?” she asked curiously.
Myrcella would find a willing shopping buddy in Momo, and even more if she was willing to divert to any toy stores to search for cute plushies and anime things. They are doomed to spend a lot of time in a mall.
"There's a lot of good stories, and maybe I can find a book with a lot of stories specific to England. That might be fun." Momo shook her head and grinned. "I don't know! I remember my mom saying once that she ate a lot of peaches when she was pregnant with me. That was the first name that came to mind, because of her pregnant lady cravings."
She leaned in a little bit and asked, "You've got a really unusual name, too. It's so pretty. Does it have a meaning or did your parents want to give you a name that's really unique?"
Myrcella would be more than happy to hunt for cute toys as well as clothes, it looked like they may see a lot of each other and the mall in the future.
“I have a few English folktale books you could borrow. The popular fairy tales in the UK are mostly Grimms and Hans Christian Anderson,” she said, “I always love to see people’s reactions to reading The Little Mermaid when they’ve only ever seen the Disney version”
“That’s cute. I like that. It’s sweeter than my story. Mum said she saw it on a headstone when she was visiting a church as a child and it had always stuck in her mind as a pretty name so when she had me there was no other choice for her really.” Morbid but kind of cool, she liked having an unusual name.
Momo's already very expressive eyes about bugged out when she heard about the tombstone story, and it seemed for a moment like she didn't know how to respond.
"Wow, that's one way to find a name. At least you aren't named after produce!" she exclaimed, before lowering her voice down and whispering conspiratorially, "I kind of like the originals a lot better than the Disney versions too, even the gruesome stories. The Little Mermaid had such a sad ending! But, let's trade books and meet again, so we can trade back. I don't mind letting you borrow Momotaro and the other Japanese tales book that I brought? And I can usually get a day free on the weekends, to go do things."
Momo's parents would be over the moon if she had anyone to hang out with, since they were considering the fact their daughter might end up a spinster librarian with forty-three cats.
“It’s definitely different to looking through a baby name book,” Myrcella grinned, “And I like your name, at least it’s one of the nicer fruits”
She nodded, “I do too. They’re a lot more realistic and you get to know the characters more I think.” There seemed to be deeper meanings which Disney all too often glossed over. “That’s a great idea” she pulled out the books she’d brought with her and handed them over to Momo, “Maybe next time we could look round the mall too?” she suggested, “There are lots of book, toy and clothes shops to explore and any others you want”
Myrcella was excited too. it had been a long time since she had clicked with anybody like she had with Momo and she felt lucky she was here.
"Right," Momo cheerfully replied, "it's nice not having a normal name, too. And I like your name, even if it's right out of a graveyard!"
At the prospect of going to the mall with someone she seemed to get along so well with, Momo looked ecstatic. She emphatically nodded her head, like it was the greatest idea, and looked ready to plan out a fun shopping trip with her new friend.
"I've got a little of my good grades money left over from my last round of tests and reports, so I think I can swing it," she said, looking and sounding excited. "Let's do that!"
And then the conversation went on with planning out where they would go and what to shop for. But before too long, it turned back to their favorite books or stories again, enough that the two continued chatting over a new round of flavored bubble tea.
