Speaking of babies… I think John and I are going to have one. Who: Deryn + Applejack When: Where: Farmer’s Market What: Telling news! Exclamation points! Rating/Warning: Low Status: Complete
AJ was tired today. It was growing colder, which always made her feel tired. She was much more of a summertime girl, even though the apple harvests were in the fall. Maybe all the extra work made her tired. Either way, she was alone at her booth at the Farmer’s Market today, wishing she had someone to relieve her so she could go for a sandwich. Roast Beef and cheddar. Sounded like heaven.
Luckily for AJ, Deryn was sort of a freaking mind reader when it came to her friends and her job at the Farmer’s Market, because when she stepped up to AJ’s booth, it was with gifts. Gifts in the form of a sandwich from that cute little shop down the road and around the corner.
“Hellllooo,” she practically sparkled, holding out the sandwich.
Not just sort of a freaking mind reader. AJ sat up a little at the sight of the sandwich and raised an eyebrow. “Oh my God, y’all knew exactly what I was in the mood for. How’d you do that?” She asked, breaking into a grin and reaching forward to accept the offering.
“AJ,” Deryn said, standing a little straighter and raising her eyebrows up, “I am very, very good at my job.” Not that getting people lunch was technically part of her job description, but she’d been doing it for so long, it would be really strange if she’d suddenly stopped. Not that she planned on stopping.
There were times when Deryn looked absolutely regal. AJ was impressed. And then her friend would grin, or trip over something, or bump into something and the regality would go poof. But this was one of those times when Deryn was just plain impressive.
AJ moved to the table behind the stand, where extra storage and whatnot were kept, and sat down to munch on her lunch. “Come sit,” she said, opening her sandwich.
When someone was as short as she was, they had to be practiced in standing up as straight as possible. Otherwise Deryn would never be able to see much of anything -- unless she dated an 800 foot tall man, who didn’t mind her sitting on his shoulders. Which, okay, she did.
She grabbed on of AJ’s apples and plopped down next to her friend, crunching into the fruit happily. “Sam and I are moving in together,” she said, skipping all formality.
AJ had just taken a bite of her sandwich when Deryn came out with the news. She gaped, then quickly recovered, chewing and swallowing as quickly as she could. “You’re what??” She was grinning, though, and swallowed again.
“Finding a place. Together.” Deryn grinned too, and then bounced a little in place on her seat, as if not able to hide her delight and absolutely had to squirm a little just to keep herself together.
“Oh my god!” AJ said, beaming over at her friend. She was trying not to speak with her mouth full, but she was so excited! “That’s amazing, D! What great news! Are you getting married??”
Deryn let out a peal of laughter, throwing her hair back over her shoulder and leaning back in a wobble. “Shut up!” She said, but with a great smile.
AJ squealed. It was a happy, girly squeal. She nearly kicked her feet with excitement. “YOU ARE! You’re going to get married!! Are you guys planning on having babies? Are you going to name one after me??”
“Yes,” Deryn said, laughing and rolling her eyes before taking a giant bite of her apple. “We’re going to get married and have fifteen babies and we’re going to name them all after you.”
“Great!” AJ said, beaming. “Just make sure you spell it properly. A and then J.” She teased, shaking her head a bit.
Deryn laughed over that too. “No, no. I’m going to name all my kids Ja.” It was funny because it was… very agreeable? Yes.
AJ laughed, too. Yeah, that’d been the joke. And it was funny. “I fully expect Godmother status. By the way. When it happens. Oh, and I can help you pick out maternity wedding dresses, if it comes to that.” She added, grinning cheekily.
“Speaking of babies… I think John and I are going to have one.”
Deryn was going to roll her eyes and say it wasn’t really going to be happening but she was immediately sidetracked by the extra news thrown on there. “WHAT?” she asked, all caps. “ARE YOU--??”
“Not yet,” AJ said, blushing. “But soon?” She and John had decided to start trying for a baby. A BABY. It was insane. She wasn’t sure if it would even be a human baby, considering that John wasn’t exactly human… was she even human? She kinda considered herself to be part pony.
Oh no, AJ was going to give birth to an alien centaur. That was disconcerting.
“Wow,” Deryn said again, eyes big. “Well, I’m happy for you.”
AJ laughed at the sight of Deryn’s eyes, then nodded, beaming. “I’m happy for us, too. I don’t know how long it’s going to take, but… can you imagine? A baby??”
“Not really,” Deryn admitted, tucking some hair behind her ear. “But I guess you’ll know who to come to if you need a babysitter, huh?”
AJ laughed again, a little harder. “Yes. Absolutely. I’ll need you to teach me how to change diapers.” She said, then dug into her sandwich.
Deryn went back to her nearly forgotten apple, and crunched happily at it for a moment. “It’s not hard. But I’ll teach you, of course.” Deryn was good with kids, even if she had no real intention of having any of her own -- it was much more fun to spoil her friends’ children after all.
“It sounds pretty gross.” AJ said, breaking into a bit of a grin. Her younger sister was quite a bit younger than she was, but she’d managed to get through without having to help her parents with any diaper changes. “But I suppose we do what we gotta do.”
“Or make someone else do it.” Deryn grinned again, all teeth and a bite of apple.
