“Thank GOD they have groceries at Target now.” Gwen said, slowly pushing the cart down the aisle. She was wearing some lounge clothes, hair a bit of a mess, but was glad to be out and about, even on her day off. “We can get everything all in one trip. Cute new outfit, new video games, toilet paper, milk…furniture…” She shrugged one shoulder and gave him a grin. “Do you have the list?”
“Furniture? What do we need that for?” John was, admittedly, a bit distracted this week. Everything that had been going to uphill now seemed to be going very downhill. It was like all his friends were disappearing from the area in favor of… not being in the area. It was like the promise of people being with him forever, in dreams or out of them was … well. Not much of a promise.
At least he had Gwen. Good ol’ Gwen. Always around. And a perfect distraction.
“Oh. Hang on.” And then he was fiddling through the pockets of his jeans and hoodie until he produced a list. “Hah!”
Good ol’ Gwen. She was, wasn’t she? Always around. Always distracting. She liked being dependable and distracting, helpful in whatever way she could. “I don’t know. I’m sure we could find something that we absolutely need but we didn’t know we needed it.” She said.
Though, they didn’t go that direction. They stayed around the grocery part of the store. “Bravo! I know we need toilet paper. What else?”
“It never hurts to have more peanut butter,” he said, sounding a little absent about it. Truth be told, he had no idea what they needed at all. He wasn’t the sort of shopper who often bought necessities so much as things that interested him at the moment.
“Mmm. Peanut butter.” She said, nodding. She grabbed the list from his hand to take a look at it. “And flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda? If we’re going to make more waffles. Oooh, maybe we should get a better waffle iron.” They had those here, too. Target was full of win.
Truly, Target was the perfect store. “I bet they’ve got shapey ones.” The Doctor was secure enough in his manliness where he was totally down for heart shaped waffles, thanks much. “And bananas.” Obviously.
“Ooh! Shapey ones!” Gwen said, giving a little nod. “Let’s go look. After bananas. And milk.” She turned the cart into the deli department to collect cheese, produce, milk, that sort of thing. Just tossing things willy nilly into the cart, then they could head into kitchen goods and look at waffle irons.
Target was a delight to shop in, but it was also kind of a trap. John always found himself adding things into the cart that he hadn’t realized he needed until he saw it sitting on the shelf. Those Pumpkin Shaped Salt and Pepper shakers? Yeah, totally needed those. Obviously.
“Sooo,” he said, after a beat. “What’s new?”
“I’ve… got a date.” Gwen said, and went a little pink. She normally didn’t go so pink, normally didn’t smile so shyly. But there was something exciting about her date with Michael. Something she was looking forward to a lot. Maybe she liked him more than the other guys she’d been out with lately? Whatever it was, it made her happy. She tossed some pumpkin themed placemats into the cart, too. To go with the Salt and Pepper Shakers.
“Oooh?” John was fiddling with some other decoration type things, but seemed to be refraining from throwing more in the cart. So far. “With the fellow you texted me about? That’s brilliant.”
“Yes. You and my friend Tom convinced me to ask him, so I did.” She gave a gentle shrug of her shoulders. “He’s really…” Handsome. That’s what she kept thinking. Sure, he was kind and funny, too, but he was really... “Adonis-like.”
“I hope there’s more to it than that,” John said, giving her a grin and tossing a new can opener into the cart. Theirs was getting to be a bit on the bad side.
“Of course there is. He’s smart, and he’s friendly, and he’s kind. And he makes an excellent pillow,” she said that bit with a blush. “He works at Baxter Bakery and he plays music.” She was definitely still in the infatuation stage. In her eyes Michael was perfect.
Which was more than alright. John got that. He knew a few people that he felt that way about. That both of them happened to not be here wasn’t really a positive, but he could still get it. “A musician?” He asked, doing a little hip wiggle to only music he could hear. “How romantic.”
“Right??” Gwen responded, enthusiastically. She gave a little sigh--the sigh of a twelve year old girl thinking about some preteen crush, possibly on some actor. Justin Bieber? Whoever the kids fawned over now-a-days. “I’ll let you know how it goes. Trying not to get my hopes up too much.” Too late.
Yeah, John got that too. Hadn’t worked out as well, but what could you do. “Yes, well, when you have updates, you know where I live.”
“True true. Okay. Waffle iron.” Gwen said, turning to look between the different models they had on display. It looked as if they were all pretty cheap. But she reached over to fiddle with the sturdiest looking one in the bunch.
“Heart shaped,” It seemed very important that they got one that was a silly shape, and the Doctor gravitated toward it like it was the only thing in the aisle, poking at the little display and smiling, open mouth and toothy.
“Heart shaped it is.” Gwen said, turning to look. “Ooh! Clearance. Perfect!” After all, when making heart-shaped waffles, it was important to use the cheapest waffle iron possible. “We should make our first batch, like, strawberry. Or use red food coloring in the batter.”
And into the cart it went, The Doctor smiling a gummy sort of smile and seeming as pleased as he could possibly be in this situation. “That’s why I like you Gwen, you’ve always got a plan.”
“That’s me.” Gwen said, beaming. “The girl with the plans.”
